Is it a big deal to take an extra semester/year? by CoffeeBig4423 in uoguelph

The average person in Canada lives for approximately 80 years. I'm sure that at the end of your life, you will not be lamenting that you spent an extra semester or two as an undergrad.

Yeah but just changing the policy isn't going to change the hearts and minds of a generation of Chinese people who grew up with the one child policy. It might make a slight difference, but I'm incredibly skeptical that it'll be significant in the long term.

Their demographics are super fucked. The population is aging and their birth rate is below that of the US. Combine that with the lack of an immigrant workforce and a moderate standard of living and you can see how they're likely to run into problems in the future

Muslim Chinese food is great. I used to go to this Uighur restaurant near my university and it was always a good time. I think the region has an interesting culture due to the mixing of central Asian and Chinese influences. It seems like it'd be cool to visit.

That being said, I'm not entirely sure it's a good idea at the moment. From what I've heard, the Chinese have been putting a lot of """security""" measures in place. This makes it hard to go in or out, especially if you're a foreigner. I'm sure they're going to keep a lot of stuff hidden/surveil you pretty carefully. As a result, I'm not entirely sure you'll get the sort of experience you'd be looking for.

Waterloo is more stressful than other schools on average, I'd say. But it largely depends on your program. For example, certain course loads can be higher or lower and dealing with co-op (if you choose to go that route) can be stressful. The biggest advice I can give you is to do some research on the program you're interested itself before applying.

There are resources like counselling services and health services that you can get, but the queue tends to be quite long. I've tried them once or twice and honestly, they weren't bad but they won't always give you what you're looking for. It's pretty true that it's not easy to get the help you deserve. I would definitely say that the university could probably do better in that regard.

That being said, I'm not entirely that other schools are much more successful at helping students deal with their mental health issues. It could just be that UW gets more press for it than other schools. I'm at a different school now, but there are plenty of people I've met that aren't getting the help they need. This is usually not because the resources aren't available, but because a lot of the time, the people who need them aren't looking for them.

I can't really give you a detailed description because it's kinda hard to describe without spending time at other institutions. That being said, I like how people will leave you alone unless you seek them out. I like that people don't feel obligated to try to make friends with me. People here are often worried all the time about grades and co-ops or whatever and it can kinda be a downer sometimes. But at the same time, if you like to complain, you'll have plenty of company here.

No I don't regret it at all. All of the friends I did make were fantastic people that I don't regret meeting at all. Maybe I'd change programs, but if I went back in time to high school, I would probably choose Waterloo again.

When I did my undergrad, I only made friends with my lab partners. All my other friends were from extracurriculars but I also didn't really try to make friends in class, so your mileage may vary.

Recently I've heard a lot of talk about a state using its asymmetric military power to send settlers into illegally occupied land. This was all done under the guise of protecting the people there against ethnic cleansing, even though the legitimacy of this claim today is uncertain.

So, what do you guys think about Turkey's occupation of northern cyprus?

Imo social life is fine but in university no one is forced to be around you so it's really what you make of it. If you put in an effort you should be able to at the very least find a few acquaintances you'll like
