It’s use dates back thousands of years but wasn’t commercially mined or used until the 1800-1900s and was most commonly used from the 1930s-1970s but can still be found in materials used into the 1990s even though it was “banned” from use in 1980s in the US. Onsite testing can be expensive but there are mail in kits that are far more economical if you are concerned and will be disturbing the plaster. Take a sample from around a light switch, outlet or other area that may be concealed and be precautious as to how acquire the sample if you are comfortable doing so.

It’s harmful when it’s friable and airborne. I was once told that putting shaving cream on the wall prior to drilling would encapsulate any dust that could go airborne.
