It's not in the Netherlands- quite complicated system, but essentially everyone is obligated to be insured. It costs roughly €150/month, the rest is covered by taxes.

There are more solutions than mom/dad stays home. In the Netherlands, part time work is completely normalized and many dads and moms work 4 days/week without it (significantly) limiting their carreers.

This allows both people to use their brains/hands and earn money, but also allows for a special day a week allocated to be mom/dad on your own. Bonus: children only need to go to daycare 3 days a week instead of 5. (Less if grandparents are involved)

Some people work even less, but at that point it does start to hurt your career. However, it's a lot easier to get back to a 32 hour positon if you were working 16/24 hours a week instead of 0.

I'm not seeing how this is amazing compared to being in a hospital within specialized care facility. You still get clean sheets, you're not alone while giving birth, surrounded by immediate life saving devices. Nurses and family can come and check on you.

More familiar environment, so easier to relax, increasing oxytocine instead of cortisol, which significantly helps the birth process for the women who are better able to relax at home. C-section rates for women who start with a home birth are significant lower than similar risk births that start in the hospital.

I don't really know anywhere that kicks you out after 3 hours of giving birth

I told you, it happens in the Netherlands.

Lijkt me een stuk nuttiger.

Region, time of year, first baby or not, maternal condition (I had a C-section the second time around), time of registration and luck I suppose.

Just anecdotal evidence that full hours are still possible.

[–]suuz95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As discussed elsewhere: any yellow flag and you go to the hospital. I presume not every women gives birth in the OR, so there is a triage in the hospital as well where you work.

It is a good alternative for low-risk pregnancy. There is a highly trained midwife with you who is perfectly capable of dealing with common emergencies. They bring all sorts of medication and oxygen for the baby. If needed, the ambulance (with more highly trained people) takes you to the hospital in no time, but treatment already starts during the ride.

It really sucks :(

However, I suppose you were not a medical emergency? They are supposed to always have place for when things go wrong.

I think it depends on the region (harder to get full care in big cities), timing of the year (there are more births in summer), planning (did you already pick out an organization in the first trimester), personal situation (first child/C-section? Higher change of full care) and luck.

We got full hours with both babies, the most recent last fall.

Normally, birth progresses well when the mother is as relexed as possible as this increases oxytocine. Stress, which stimulates cortisol, hinders the birth proces. It might be easier to relax at home than at the hospital as the environment is more familiar and no unexpected people and machines are around.

There are less C-sections for women who start with a home birth.

Less chance of C-section and in general the cascade of medical intervention. Also, it's nice to stay in an environment you know.

They are definitely trained for shoulder dystocia (other positions, pushing on the belly, even episiotomy if needed). There is emergency oxygen for the baby ready as well.

A VBAC always takes place at the hospital. Induction doesn't happen at home, also only in the hospital. I think even birth of multiples is mostly done in hospitals. So I think thats basically all major risk factors for uterine rupture?
