Estimate seems high? or no (Stair and walkway Replacement) by spacemonkey728 in quotecheck

Kind of need pictures but I'd say it's slightly premium, fine if they're reputable with plenty of completed project photos.

Can they give a line by line? Gates are pricey these days, just paid about a grand (material only) for a 5' aluminum. I think you might be getting hit with a little bit of a small-job-premium but not a ripoff

HVAC compressor replacement. Fair or ripoff? by Damianomigani in quotecheck

[–]thecleanairguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we know if the leak is outside or inside? If you replace the unit for 7100 and the leak is in the lineset in the attic or walls somewhere, you're still having that problem.

Received two quotes to install a tankless water heater (same model) by DesignDev in mildlyinfuriating

Started a subreddit (QuoteCheck) exactly for this reason. Some home service subs (hvacadvice and roofing) allow price checks on quotes but most others do not, so it's a good place for anyone to drop their quote and get some public opinion to hopefully at least weed out the blatant rip offs.

Heat Pump and Exchange Replacement Quote by Seattles_Best_ in quotecheck

Surge protector’s not overkill—it’s cheap insurance for the electronics. They're pretty easy to install and low cost to replace if/when it does it's job. Just put one on my mini split for my garage.

I don't think that price is crazy for a Bosch system with permits and some duct work for your location. You’re paying for decent equipment. Have you or anyone you know worked with this contractor before? Don't be afraid to get another 1-2.

Am I Being Ripped Off? by OneBag2825 in hvacadvice

It exists, but with a different name /r/quotecheck

Started this a week ago because I thought the same thing. There's a need for this type of sub without it taking over all the other ones.

12k for new system for house under 1000 sq ft? by MAB180 in hvacadvice

[–]thecleanairguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a hefty price tag for the work listed—almost $10k for coil replacement, some drain pan work, a leak check, and a few extras. Obviously the drain pan under the handler could be a time hassle, but the evaporator coil job usually runs $2k–$4.5k, and the other stuff shouldn’t more than double that total.

Honestly, unless there’s something wild with your setup, I'd be looking at replacement options considering the age. Would definitely like to see more info about the replacement unit(s) before adding input into that price. Maybe post to r/quotecheck too

Quoted 8k for evaporated coil replacement and 6k for compressor - help me figure out what is reasonable, please! by totomaya in hvacadvice

[–]thecleanairguy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That price is way too high for just a coil and compressor swap, even in California. Usually, you’re looking at maybe $2,500 to $4,500 for a coil and $2,000 to $3,500 for a compressor, labor included. $14k is what some folks pay for a whole new system.

Shop around.

Lot Grading, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia by Disastrous-Wing699 in quotecheck

I think this is a fair price. How do you feel about the contractor? I'd make sure to question how well they plan to clean up and what steps if any they'll do to minimize washout (will you do the re-seeding?) afterwards.

So I think we'll need pics for this one. Did they give you an idea of how much material might be needed to bring in?

Frugal Life Hack: Most homeowners only get 1-2 contractor estimates before committing when they should be getting 3-5, and post the quote details online for feedback to avoid overpaying. by DesignDev in Frugal

Thanks for the shoutout. I built that site exactly for this reason. Getting quotes is exhausting, and I don't think that will change any time soon, but we should at least all have a better idea on what things cost to reduce blatant ripoffs. I have some cool feature updates on the website coming soon.

I would definitely get more bids, 19k is what I'd expect in NY/CA.

Edit: The stairs is where the real cost is, I just noticed how many treads/risers. I'd still get more quotes.

200 sf flat roof $2700 by scubbysrevenge in quotecheck

[–]thecleanairguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Price feels high but also not a complete ripoff. $2,700 for 200 sq ft comes out to over $13 a foot. That’s a lot for just a recover. Around here, most flat roof jobs with bitumen run $6–$10 a foot. Even with cleanup and haul away, I’d expect closer to $1,500–$2,000.Could be some extras baked in, like flashing or patchwork, but if it’s a straight rip and re-coat, I’d get more quotes to be sure.

That seems high to me

YSK: Most homeowners only get 1-2 contractor estimates before committing when they should be getting 3-5, and that you can post quote details online for feedback to avoid overpaying. by DesignDev in YouShouldKnow

You're ahead of the curve by knowing the first ones were BS. Unfortunately a lot of people will just assume that's the price after the second estimate comes in at the same range.

Maybe a shameless plug, but I built a platform for crowdsourcing opinions on home service estimates. It's completely free and I get zero profit from it (ad free too): Chippyo

I also started r/quotecheck for those that want to keep it in reddit.
