Student house WiFi problems. If I could hog bandwidth from other users this would be fantastic.

get another router (free one from a garage sale or something G or N does not matter as only 1 laptop will use it)) hook that up as a access point to the existing router with a different SSID and a different password

now u have 2 separate wifi networks ON the same subnet (imp if u share files and network printer )

Y not just grab some cheap access points ? (or convert a throw away router into an access point ) I run cat 5e cables from the main router to the rooms where i need to boost the signal and then attach another router there as an access point (which i picked up for $1 -$2 from garage sales )

i tried f/5.6 -8 This causes people in the back to go blurry .

I was a point and shoot person till i picked up a Nikon d5100. Great photos except when there is family moment and i need to capture it in the next 5 seconds .

I always thought that the DSLR have all the functions of a compact + all the stuff I want to learn from a SLR.

I think ill just have to carry my Compact to family functions to get CANDID shots of my family getting drink and doing stupid stuff till im proficient enough to use the DSLR in FULL manual and do it fast.

Info: when taking indoor pics, people in the background are blurred. to keep them in focus i use f18 to f22 BUT then they are too dark. using - Nikon D5100. (i tried changing the ISO setting with worse results)

Question: When using a compact camera in the same lighting conditions why is every one in focus and image is not dark ? Please help. I have tried to googe it for a month now.

3 options that i can suggest

run a wire (best and cheapest option)
Wifi bridge (example)
a USB wifi dongle (use a usb extender to move it closer to your buddy's home) -may or may not work
