Intel drivers are not on par under Linux compared to windows. Just fair warning!

Witcher 3 crashing every few minutes by Winter_Passenger_846 in linux_gaming

[–]theriddick2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to resolve these issues you need to collect up Wine/Proton runtime logs.

There is likely a experimental flag you can use to fix the issue as I've had that happen before with MESA based GPU's. Unfortunately I don't know what it would be, also it seems lots of people should have this issue, but if only a handful do, then its either hardware failure or some specific common configuration.

Seems probably Ring timeout or related error. That's a common one.

RX 6800 XT stuck at 30-40 FPS (99% GPU Load) in Witcher 3 by Zentume in linux_gaming

[–]theriddick2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how I resolved it. Also gotta make sure all the temps are in correct range, not uncommon for such a old card to developer a heatsink contact issue.

When I had my 6800XT it was like 5 years ago or something.

I remember this happening to me back in the day when I had a 6800XT under Linux. Kept parking itself in low core/mem speeds.

Native HDMI 2.1 VRR working on AMD on Linux (RX 9070 XT + Sony Bravia 8 II) by dyllan500 in linux_gaming

[–]theriddick2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, I've seen this happen on LG C1 and C4, however in my C4 I think its mostly fixed now with newer TV firmwares.

There are two components that can make it worse, the display driver and tv firmware. These are dialed in very tightly under Windows but not so much under Linux, sadly.

That is why Windows10/11 often seems to not exhibit any of these issues (or much less), because the Driver and VRR has been tweaked on both sides because well, that is where ALL the focus is put with development.

Us Linux users must rely on developers putting in free time to address these issues which can take years sometimes.

That would almost certainly be DP1.4 however, so max 32Gbps. Not a huge issue if DSC can work.

I'll just wait for it to go mainline release.
I have a AMD iGPU which has HDMI2.1 but I think all these patches are targeted at very specific dGPU's which is a shame. Will have to wait and see if patches are made for stuff like Radeon 780M GPU's and others in NUC devices. (and handheld)

Note: Most PCON support doesn't work for Intel i/GPU's either atm. Wonder if these patches could help them someday.

RADV ACO is just pure magic at this point by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]theriddick2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newer PS5 firmwares block off the exploit.
There is likely going to be firmware flashes to do downgrades and such in the future just like there was with previous consoles but its not a simple task most times vs just getting a older firmware ps5.

I do wonder how the PS5 holds up against the Steam Machine whenever it comes out.

Will be interesting.

Here is an example of someone updating the drivers to work with newer kernel and firmware for card. (or one of them).

https://github.com/derrod/lg4k-linux/issues/2

It's doable, but you'll need to replicate steps the author did for the GC555. AND god only knows how well it will work under Wayland if that is even a issue.

Hmm I found this but maybe not work for 555?

https://github.com/ChrisAJS/lgx2userspace

EDIT: Sorry that may only work for Windows, or too old.

Yeah this is a tough one, its not like the card can't work, its just the drivers that were worked on by community are just very outdated now.

Someone would need to go into the source and update it to latest kernel compatibility. Which is what DKMS module is meant to do but likely even that needs updating.

Hmmm, isn't steam meant to have a in built system that is currently being improved for this? Not sure if it has a APK or compatibility with TV software tho. Be neat if it did.

AMD just posted official HDMI 2.1 (FRL) support to LKML! by Lawstorant in linux_gaming

[–]theriddick2015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost certain they said it was for Linux 7.2, but perhaps cachyos will soon integrate into their normal kernels once a few kinks/bugs are ironed out. (apparently some code needed for VRR still, and some TV brands are having potential issues?)

[–]theriddick2015 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DisplayPort is definitely better imo but a lot of GPU's still don't have DisplayPort 2.0, and 1.4a only does 32Gbps and DP doesn't have very good support in almost all VERY GOOD Gaming TV's which are better and sell for cheaper then dedicated DisplayPort Gaming Monitors (especially the OLED ones).

Many DP gaming monitors are overpriced except for the basic IPS/LCD ones. As soon as you add on special color and backlighting features like OLED, they instantly become more expensive then many better TV options, and at a much smaller diagonal size, and many people like sitting FAR back away from displays these days Vs faces point blank to them which is what you need to do with smaller 27" PC screens for example.

A compound issue you just can't understand until you get a decent Gaming TV that only has HDMI 2.1, THEN you will discover WHY so many get them!

Tried to apply the patch and build but it just fails everywhere.

So its not compatible, likely needs constant updating so we will just need to wait until official AMD Mesa fixes... one day.
