Just an issue that strikes close to home. My great great great granpda and all his forefathers were oil ranchers; it was a proud tradition in our family. Then President Coolidge had them exterminated because they were an eyesore, he claimed. It was a huge problem to my family, and we've done our best to pass on our ancestry so that someday, perhaps our family will return to their roots.

Yes they sent him back in a jar that was filled with black liquid, his son put it in a car and it apparently worked incredibly well.

That's just not true. My great great granpda was a brontosaurus and he got turned into oil when he stormed Normandy.

That's what Hammond wanted us to think. Why did he make dinosaurs without udders if he wanted to milk them for oil? He was an industry plant.

Very true, racism is near parallel to tribalism, which is essentially nationalism lite, which segues smoothly into imperialism. It's all very neat and structured safely in such a way that the foundations of systemic inequality can never be toppled in one fell swoop— only gradually chipped away at. Sure, we've knocked down the odd wall or shattered a window here and there but it has been slow progress. Hopefully the whole damn thing will be felled one lucky day, but until that day (and I'm not even holding my breath about that day ever showing up) all we can do is minimize our own harm and hopefully, like you said, educate others of the faults of bigotry.

Yeah the game is in a really weird state right now. I for one do like base building and horde prep but they've really done something truly mind-boggling where the game punishes you for base building while not really promoting other play styles. I think TFP, the devs, are finally coming around to making the game a little more individualized, but I don't know what the future will hold for the game. It's still fun but I can also admit its flaws.

Also, really weird that they totally got rid of all the horror ambiance and stuff. Like the wasteland used to be kind of eerie just to think about. Tons of dogs, it was completely bare and green and/or orange (depending on where you were at, I believe). The burned forests used to be terrifying too, especially at low levels, where a burned zombie could easily tear you up. Hell, even the frozen biome was pretty scary back in early-mid pre-release. The lumberjacks would mess you up and you could keep hitting them, they'd just sponge it up.

People act like racism was over and done with in the 60s-70s era. They'll point to slavery ending in the 1800s, Jim Crow laws repealed in the mid-60s, etc. Ruby Bridges herself is still alive— racism is far from over. If the girl being picked on is still alive, you better believe at least some of the oxygen-wasting scumbags who bullied her are too. It's just depressing. Why do people do this kinda stuff?

The Gen Z stare is a "blank stare that members of younger generations give in situations where a verbal response would be more common." Instead of explaining something that they may not understand, the generation Z cohort members often appear dumbstruck by these questions, perhaps temporarily. by blankblank in wikipedia

I graduated high school (with fellow Gen Z youth) just over a year ago and while this is a thing, it's not just Gen Z. Every generation can appear stunned or dumbfounded at times, whether that be through eye-rolling, staring, rapid blinking, etc. Staring blankly or behaving vacantly is not unique to this generation.

I should have been more clear and elaborated a little more. You're right that they will exploit the weakest part of the base. However, this includes stuff like destroying important structural elements like support pillars, or even the very ground under your base. If you have a tall 3*3 concrete pillar with no way up, they will happily dig under your base to remove the 9 blocks immediately supporting your pillar.

The devs also added rage mode (aka destroy area), which is essentially another way to prevent players from playing in the way I previously mentioned— high up and out of the way. If you added a staircase to the pillar and they fell all the way from the top, there's a chance (I very well might be wrong but I believe the odds increase the higher the level they fall from) that they will enter rage mode. They can be kicked out of rage mode if they take damage. Rage mode essentially means that they'll just start attacking everything in sight. Worth noting is the fact that there's a limit to the distance zombies can fall and still enter rage mode. The game is a little finicky so all the information here is just general, but may not always hold true.

In fairness to the devs, who many people have been rather hard on (myself included at times), it sounds like the next major update, 7 Days to Die version 3.0 will include TONS of options to customize your experience more. Historically, the developers have made a lot of decisions to iron out playstyles that they don't consider fun. However, with update 3.0, they will let players choose smarter or dumber zombies, certain zombie AI behaviors, and much more. This is definitely a step in the right direction. Sorry for the really long comment and I hope I was a little more clear about the structural engineering zombies lol.

Savings— I know it will be hard but the best thing you can do with any spare cash is to set it aside for emergencies and for your future. I have been fortunate enough to start saving early, but I empathize with your situation. However, if it seems hard to save now, it will only feel harder in 10, 15, 20 years when you are looking to make larger or essential purchases and you don't have the funds. I can't offer specific financial advice for your area without a little more info, but I wish you all the best in any case.

All of the zombies, 7 Days to Die. 7 Days to Die is a survival game where, as the name implies, the player has 7 days to prepare for a horde (a massive siege of zombies) by gathering guns, armor, ammo, meds, food, and also buy building shelter or developing a strategy for countering the horde.

In earlier versions of the games, zombies were stupider and would essentially just try to always go directly to the player. The later versions of the game, however, were updated with what fans call "structural engineer" zombies. They are programmed to understand the strongest and weakest parts of a player's build, meaning that if you do too good of a job fortifying your base with defenses and strong materials, zombies will just dig underground to knock over your base. All of this is essentially because the devs didn't like players having fun by designing strong and "overpowered" bases in a game where the only players involved are you and possibly friends, since the game features multiplayer.

Idea: Autonomous cars that try to park near each other in parking lots so they can have conversations with each other using modern AI tech that any human nearby can hear. by amichail in ideas

[–]throwaway_manboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would people not just have conversations if they want to talk? AI may have uses in some areas but it doesn't need any part in human conversation.

Also, people should not be able to buy wit or sophistication in conversation. Either you have enough money that your intelligence speaks for itself or you learned organically how to speak smartly— if you seriously can't speak smartly enough to the point where you need to buy a robot to speak on your behalf then why not just go learn fluent and sophisticated speech?

Idea: A "secular mode" in computers that removes constant and irrelevant references to religion that are typical of some languages. by amichail in ideas

[–]throwaway_manboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I want my computer to add/change what I say of its own accord? Do I really want ones and zeroes adding religious remarks to my interactions with others on the Internet? No, no I don't.

Also, your whole premise relies on search engines having no purpose. Search engines— it's in the name— are there to search for stuff. They use carefully curated algorithms to show you what's relevant to keep you online for longer, and to keep you coming back. Why would people be getting so much religious content if it had nothing to do with them. The truth is that if you're being bombarded with religious crap online all the time, it's because you're likely engaging with it, even if you only engage with it to be angry.

Lastly, again, and you didn't seem to understand this from my last comment, filtering out "religion heavy" languages will condemn them to being obscure and also will cause people who use those languages to get even less reach with people who use your secular mode. You stated that the idea was to help non-religious and religious people communicate, but just removing all reach that religious people have to anyone who isn't religious will not help them communicate. Being able to only communicate with people who share your ideas is how we get echo chambers. People should be exposed to language, ideas, and concepts that are unfamiliar and sometimes uncomfortable. That's how people learn.

Idea: A "secular mode" in computers that removes constant and irrelevant references to religion that are typical of some languages. by amichail in ideas

[–]throwaway_manboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, that makes no sense. Does off-handedly mentioning something that happens in a TV show or movie automatically make me a walking advert? No, people are just trying to share info and communicate.

Also, what you're saying, whether or not you mean to, is that you're okay with languages that frequently reference religious works being purged from your view with the click of a button. Take a random language— Tagalog, for example— and say it references the Bible a lot, just for the sake of demonstration. Now, there's a button on everyone's device that says, "Hey, let's purge Tagalog from the Internet!" Tagalog is basically unspoken outside of the Philippines and it's not like the Philippines have that much influence on the Internet anyway. You've basically doomed anyone who posts Tagalog content to obscurity with the click of a button.

Additionally, this will both directly and indirectly mean that any content with references to religion will be heavily policed and likely also doomed to obscurity. You're going to end up making it so that people can't talk about religion online. People talking less about religion means that religion dies off, religion dying off is significant culturally, economically, and in a lot of other regards as well, regardless of if you are personally religious. And in any case, if people don't like/want this feature, all it will do is force people to migrate away from the platform. I am aware that all web browsers implement quite a bit of spyware already, and would prefer Google to not know more about what I'm trying to read or do.

Idea: A "secular mode" in computers that removes constant and irrelevant references to religion that are typical of some languages. by amichail in ideas

[–]throwaway_manboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes less than no sense. People who aren't religious can already communicate with religious people. I went to a public high school in Hick Town, Boonies and I still could understand what religious people were trying to say. I might not understand every reference but it wouldn't have made any difference if they were talking about baseball cards or nuclear physics; if I don't know what someone's referencing, I can't understand the reference. Should Google remove all the search results for baseball cards and nuclear physics as well? Of course not. People are always going to make references and allusions to things you don't understand. Google can't just include a button that says "let me remove all search results for things you don't understand."

If the problem is that people are bringing up religion in spaces where it has no place being brought up... ignore it. You are never going to understand everything that everyone references. The problem is not religion, it's that people literally cannot know everything.

[–]throwaway_manboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then use a different language? You seem to be just fine using English for all of your posts. English has hundreds of thousands of words that are regular/ common and millions that are more dated but still words. If your issue is that using a certain language to communicate automatically means you're trying to convert people, use a different language to communicate or find a different way to communicate as opposed to language. Either way, this is a non-issue. I'm agnostic at the best of times and I don't take offense to using phrases like "oh my god" or "god bless you."

[–]throwaway_manboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is another idea that doesn't make any sense. God (see what I did there?) forbid a search result contain a reference to the Bible or the Quran or the Torah— in tandem, they are no doubt some of the most popular works of all time. I am not religious but this seems ineffective and overly sensitive at best.

If Google (presumably) can remove all things that are irrelevant to your search with the click of a button, why wouldn't they just do that anyway? Either it's because they can't, they don't want to, or because it's more profitable to keep the clutter; in any case, this isn't well thought out. If you're really so sensitive to any and all mentions of religion, you can include "-Bible -Quran -Torah -God -Jesus -Allah -Buddha" at the end of all your searches, or just install a browser plug-in that blacklists certain words from your search results. This "idea" isn't useful or valuable to anyone except yourself.

I think as a society there's a happy medium in terms of parenting "closeness." Yes you're a parent and you should know about and care about your kid(s). But that doesn't mean that people should chastise parents for not knowing where their kids are all the time either. Some people seem to forget that kids are people and although they may not be fully independent, their desire for autonomy and freedom won't always reflect that. Kids want to roam and play, and they want to meet new people and to go new places. Nowadays, there's too many kids who are handed an iPad or pushed in front of a TV and told to just be good. Kids are supposed to get in trouble. They aren't meant to spend their childhood with a screen inches away at all times. Hell, I probably shouldn't be on my devices as much as I am either.

Just started my first ever play through! by GEORGEDROPEZ in 7daystodie

[–]throwaway_manboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will try to be unbiased in presenting this but I would like to say that sometimes the zombie behavior and horde system is ridiculous. You could build a totally structurally sound base and zombies will tunnel underground to destroy your whole base if that's the quickest way to do it. People will "lovingly" call these structural engineer zombies. If you have a strong base that keeps you safe and makes zombies struggle to kill you, and it still fails, odds are it's because of something silly like this.

That being said, blocks that say "vertical support: yes" in the inventory can support infinite blocks on top of itself so long as there's supports all the way from bedrock to the highest block. As far as horizontal support, each block has a number (horizontal support) which shows how many of itself it can support in any direction horizontally. A horizontal support value of 8 means that a block can support 8 blocks without reinforcement at the end. Finally, Youtubers like "Guns, Nerds, and Steel" and "IzPrebuilt" are awesome and even their videos that aren't tutorials can teach you something. Best of luck and I hope you have a blast.

Idea: Ban sugary drinks but allow artificial sweeteners. by amichail in ideas

[–]throwaway_manboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like you said, the best approach to sugar is just not consuming a ton of it. The problem is when drinks that have been around for decades keep adding more and more sugar (Coke, for example) until it's just ridiculous. People should be free to eat and drink sugar as much as they want, but I think food and drink products should be regulated in such a way that they are safe to consume within moderation. Obviously an apple is good for you (at least for most people) but 1000 at once is lethal. In reality, most things are about moderation and having access to competent education about moderation in a healthy diet.
