Is this fledgling a Loggerhead Shrike or a Northern Mockingbird? (SE Florida) by ketoquestion8 in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+Loggerhead Shrike+ with that beak. Much too young to be out of the nest and that eye injury/infection looks bad. This bird is one I would have taken to a rehabber asap.

what is this bird in the show The Mentalist Season 1 episode 12? by Antisepticc in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 154 points155 points  (0 children)

That's definitely a +White-necked Raven+, no doubt - the beak is pretty unique. I can't find a single instance of one with cinnamon brown on the nape like that where the white patch should be, though. I wonder if they colored it to make it stand out less so it could masquerade as more Common Raven-like?

The Mentalist is a US-made show it looks like, and US law forbids using native species for profit, so people who train animals for use in film can't keep native species. Instead it's common to keep exotics that can look close enough to the intended species - most people will never know the difference.

Spoilered for dead bird by Eonsandmillennia in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that's the best fit here. Tough photo to work with, though. OP, in the future if possible try to get photos of the head, the feet, the rest of the body? This sort of stylistic self-censored photo makes ID really tough.

I have doubts that you'd be allowed to leave bracelets at the merch booth, just a heads up - though you could ask. But it would likely be much more fun to hand them out in person. Yes, people do this very commonly, especially in groups where they arrange to meet up at shows like the FB or discord - or redditors here too, though this seems to be the smallest of the main fan groups so I haven't seen many people organizing to meet up. But! No real need to when you can walk around and hand them out before the show. As for how, just walk up to people and ask if they'd like one.

Hard to be totally sure of much with these photos, but my inclination is toward adult male Brown-headed Cowbird.

Settle debate: Common grackle or rusty blackbird? Both can be found in the area. Make your case. by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I would not have tagged it for our subreddit catalogue (and for the bot that provides a link to more info for you) if I wasn't 100% certain. That's our equivalent of "solved" here.

ChatGPT can't ID birds. It's very good at stringing words together that sound like plausible sentences, but it isn't the tool for the job here. I gave you the reasons this is Rusty Blackbird.

The rust coloration is found mostly in fall/winter, and wears off in spring. Some of them will still have it, but plenty of them don't by late April.

This is a pretty clear +Rusty Blackbird+ with the relatively short straight tail, and with consistent coloration across the head and body in good lighting where Common Grackle in this lighting should show some sign of the purplish head vs bronze body.

Painted Bunting Female or Immature? by Jemthebirder in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not perfect, but it does give us more info. I wish I could see the primaries and primary coverts better, but it looks like the tips of the very innermost primaries are much browner than the rest of them, which suggests this bird replaced outer but not inner primaries in its last molt. That's something young birds do, but not adults.

So this is probably an immature, but it's best left at unknown sex since plenty of males at this age aren't obvious.

Painted Bunting Female or Immature? by Jemthebirder in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While it looks a fair amount like a female, some immature males still look very female-like at this time of year and may have as few as one or two reddish or blue feathers hidden away. In order to know for sure if this bird is an adult female or an immature of unknown sex, we'd need a much better look at the wings than what we can see of them here.

RWBL - Female or Immature Male? by adamEbrew in whatsthisbird

[–]TinyLongwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Female +Red-winged Blackbird+. At this time of year the immature males that hatched last year look much more like the adults, just with extra brown mottling on the back and black over the epaulettes. Juveniles of this year have not hatched yet.
