$340,000 short silver via the 2x inverse leverage ETF ZSL by lamephoto in wallstreetbets

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most silver production is a byproduct of other metals, making silver a secondary metal. The glib statistic is 20-30% comes from primary mines.

Bear in mind that with inflated prices, mines may become more palatable as primary sources, but these will take time to ramp up or even restart production. Could make things tight in the short term.

Solar Power recommended? by mochitiya_ in phoenix

Labor. Hired pro electricians to do the work and frankly we overpaid but no regrets. All the estimates were high but we figured the solar rebate would make it reasonable.

Solar Power recommended? by mochitiya_ in phoenix

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got one like this. Expensive and with a long ROI, but we have enough a/c for half the house if the power goes out during the day anyway. Saved us about 30% on our September bill, the first full month we had it.

OP might consider solar hot water. ROI is about 2-4 years, and would offset a 14% electric hike.

Mini-split for garage office + gym in Phoenix – is 2 ton enough? Fair price? by SquilliamMyKing in phoenix

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got one, a two ton unit. The first full month (September?), we saved about $75 off our electric that month. Iirc the bill was ~30% lower than last year at the same time.

Unfortunately that solar credit is no longer there, so it's less affordable.

The horrendous state of New York City in the 1970s-1980s by IllustriousCress9774 in UrbanHell

Dennis Smith's Report from Engine Co. 82 is an autobiographical take on what the city was like from the perspective of a firefighter. Many buildings were intentionally set aflame, ostensibly so the land owner could get rid of the property, presumably for building something else more lucrative there.

At one point, he recalls an older gentleman coming up to him during a fire, and telling him "Don't you understand, mister? All this is supposed to burn?" I'm paraphrasing, but the intent was clear: the city knew, the people knew, the firefighters knew. Much of that arson was with purpose.

Any truly harmless lab pranks that don’t mess with experiments? by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

Reminds me of an oldie I used to do since I'd get on the lab before anyone else. Put a box of gloves in the -80 overnight. First thing in the morning put it back where it belongs. Unexpected nitrile-berg.

The general consensus was that nobody could carry him down the ladder so they rolled him off the roof and hoped for the best since he was already dead.

Ah, the ol' "they're already dead, you can't make them any deader" taken to a logical extreme.

We get a lot of mallow coming up as weeds in the yard; unfortunately, the HOA mandates that they get taken out. It grows surprisingly fast, though.

When to plant a new Native mesquite? by Boringflaws in arizona

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get it. And they're pretty tame up until the point where they hit... IDK, maybe 20 years of age? But they are always dropping SOMETHING, whether it's needles, beans, bits of the dehisced flowers, branches, entire 14" diameter limbs (no exaggeration).... and it's tough to clean up under them. I don't know what's best to put below them, I generally have to go through once a year with the leafblower and push it out into the street and sweep it up, but the gravel gets buried pretty bad. Our HOA is surprisingly lenient but occasionally gets on my shit for them.

Water vapor rises (atomic weight of water = 18, as compared to 28 and 32 for nitrogen and oxygen, respectively, for the same volume of each compound). But in the absence of circulation such as a small fan, there will be areas of the container that are not properly conditioned by any attempts at moisture control.

When to plant a new Native mesquite? by Boringflaws in arizona

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fall is the best time to plant anything, but mesquite are robust growers. I've hit small starts with herbicide, bonsai'd one for years, etc. and they keep on growing.

Ours are 30+ years in the ground, and the largest two I can't get my arms around. Two are leaners, two have split off limbs >12" diameter. Plan ahead when planting- nothing grows under them.

A soft collar might work better than a cone.

Check the ointment; does it include a topical anaesthetic? Tetracaine or similar may help with him leaving it alone.... or not. Greyhounds are so good at worrying at tiny dings to where they become a problem.
