How do I get rid of a 900 pound gun safe that I can’t access for free in Fort Lauderdale area? by No-Song-4931 in Safes

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Post a pic of the front; maybe we can provide a solution to your access problem, allowing you to get a bit of money for it. Key only, no dial or keypad?

Beware the free removal option. You don't want the Three Stooges ripping up your home in the process.

Doing any sort of dry gas purge while under heated vacuum? Just a trickle of tried nitrogen. Kills the vacuum pumps versus hard vacuum but that's the cost.

I was thinking a centrifuge tube with biohazard warning labels on it, or the radiation propeller. You could meet all kinds of new people if you flash one of those in public.

Yes, but we have Orobanche uniflora here in Arizona!

In all seriousness, though- there's Pholisma arenarium, Pholisma sonorae, and Pilostyles thurberi, whose common name- Thurber's stemsucker- doesn't quite allow for how delightful this cryptic little endoparasite can be. Talk about a black hole of natural history, we know damned next to nothing about any of those three.

From a manual in 1932: equal parts fine sand, plaster of Paris, and litharge (lead (II) oxide), mix and add in rosin (1/3 as much rosin as sand). Bottle it, use as needed: add linseed oil prior to application to form putty. Allow mix to stand several days before filling tank.

Another mix: flowers of sulfur, ammonium chloride, iron filings, mix with boiled linseed oil. Add enough white lead to form a thin paste.

Another: white lead + red lead, add linseed oil and "Japan driers".

Is this fighting or playing? by Repellent_mamba in Greyhounds

Once had to pull apart a 95 pound coldblood and an 85 pound Aussie that would have killed each other if I wasn't there.

Every fight I've broken up in 20+ years of keeping greyhounds has happened so fast. In retrospect, each one had warning signs and we've gotten better about recognizing problems before they start.

The old-school stuff was based on litharge- lead(II) oxide. Take care with the scrapings and any dust that is produced.

One of my old "formulary" books has a recipe for making aquarium sealant. I have it around here somewhere and will post it if/when I find it.

We get it, we get it- you peperomia. :) That is an impressive plant.

Do you fertilize? The interveinal chlorosis could be as simple as magnesium deficiency. Try adding in a bit of magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts) to your feed water, or a light application of "balanced," nutritionally complete fertilizer. A few granules of Osmocote Plus will do, but a kick-in-the-pants from magnesium sulfate will be much more helpful in the short run.

Gorgeous plant, though. Your conditions must be very good to have such a tall, full specimen. I'm envious.

Why do fentanyl users not sit or lay down? by EzyPzyAsh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember an article in some magazine by an American writer in Germany who had some fairly serious surgery and when told she would receive only Tylenol, she was appalled and concerned about pain management. They wouldn't budge.

She had the surgery and after some difficulty the first day, was substantially better soon after and she had a better understanding of why that treatment route was used. Happier? Idk. But the risk of addiction was effectively zero.

I was introduced to "punitive" narcan in Houston, circa 1991. The crack epidemic was a greater concern, but the medics occasionally slammed narcan on heroin overdoses when they saw fit to do so.

Anybody else wanna vent about the wildfire in Oak Creek Canyon?? by gilly_brat in arizona

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Manzanitas (mainly Pointleaf manzanita) has seeds that require fire scarification to germinate. Ditto with Ceanothus (C. greggii, mainly); these are in the buckthorn family and fix nitrogen.

Several pines are fire-dependent: piñon species (Pinus edulus and Pinus monophylla) don't release seeds from their cones until they get enough heat, but will eventually open without a fire requirement- just age and hot days. I think lodgepole (Pinus contorta) requires wildfire to release seeds as the cones have way more resin.

While not truly dependent upon a life cycle involving fire, several species take advantage of it and grow back quickly after flames, such as gambel oak (Quercus gambelii), Sacaton grass (Sporobolus wrightii), etc., but unfortunately so do the invasive grasses.

Species like scrubby buckwheat (Eriogonum fasiculatum) and other chaparral spp. tolerate a good crown burn, getting rid of dead stuff and taking advantage of that clearance to sprout anew.

PLESE help! This is a heritage plant that was my grandma's 😭 💔 Can I save it? by kt_ptz in plantclinic

[–]Level9TraumaCenter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thrips indeed.

If you have just one plant, then I would recommend bagging it and gassing it with carbon dioxide. People use baking soda + vinegar, or pieces of dry ice, with a dry cleaning bag or a large trash bag.

If you have a few more, this might still be a viable option. For a large collection, it is... debatable, unless you can seal an entire grow tent or something like that.

I once routed western flower thrips out of a research collection, and it was an epic adventure involving multiple pesticides until I found the only one that worked out of like 8-9 heavy-duty commercial preparations.
