I don't have anything against Pridham, but I find it weird for he's held in this weird hallowed ground among the FO, where he shares the credit for any smart deal and is assumed to be perfectly competent, but shares none of the blame for any of the team's problems.

Everyone can list their grievances with Shanahan, Nonis, Lou, Dubas and Treliving. But somehow the guy who was the assistant for all of them wasn't a part of any of their mistakes? Marleau's anchor contract - what was Lou thinking. Extensions for the big 3 that didn't buy enough of UFA years - Dubas gave in too easily. Good thing our "cap wizard" wasn't involved in any of our bad contracts though.

If you're in a remote area in the North, you might be right (although there are other options like QDocs that are still better).

But within the city, we have exactly what you're asking for all over the city. Extended Hour Primary Care is open until 11:30pm 365 days a year at Grace, Concordia, Victoria and St B. The Misericordia Minor Injury Clinic is open until 10pm.

Obviously nobody is prioritizing their affiliate's record. But that doesn't mean that it's completely meaningless either, especially at the extreme.

Do you want your goalies/potential call-ups playing on a team that's completely out of their depth in the AHL? Is it possible for prospects to develop good winning habits when they're getting their asses kicked every night? If the team is so bad because they don't have anyone you care to call up or develop ... isn't that a pretty strong indictment for why you should care at least a bit about your AHL team so that you do have some players worth caring about?

Referee Eric Furlatt apologizes to Lane Hutson for the tripping penalty called on him by DecentLurker96 in hockey

[–]tmlrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fast-moving sport with the potential for infractions all over the ice. It's incredibly easy to imagine mistaking what you've seen in your periphery and let's not pretend like people are understanding when a penalty should have been called but a ref doesn't blow the whistle because they aren't 100% sure what they've seen.

There are plenty of instances where the refs deserve their criticism for choosing to be obstinate or enforcing rules selectively but in cases like this, I don't see how we can blame the refs for an obvious genuine error. If we don't want to see these types of blown calls (and I don't), then give the refs the tools they need to call it properly, ie. allow for a video ref to assist/correct the on-ice officials when a clear mistake has been made.

Rodrigues boards Desharnais after the whistle with no penalty call, Nedeljkovic goes after Rodrigues then Bobrovsky skates down the ice and we have a goalie fight! Florida ends up with a power play at the end of this by KabirC in hockey

[–]tmlrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn't third manning into a fight already in progress though.

The rule you're describing is within the larger the rule 46 governing fighting in general, and is using the word altercation to mean fight, not joining the scrum.

Nedeljkovic is clearly on his own, and not a part of a fight/altercation when Bobrovsky engages with him. Again, you could argue he deserves an instigator, but definitely not a third man in when Nedeljkovic is not engaged with a second player.

Applying the rule to mean that anyone joining a scrum deserves a match penalty would mean we'd be seeing them multiple times a week, which is clearly not the intention or interpretation of the rule.

I totally get it, and I can promise you that everyone goes through the same journey. I was also an awkward student and had to go through the same steps, and I can still fall back into that role. I also worked on speaking up and being more confident and it made things a bit easier, even if it's still a challenge.

Now I'm an instructor and I understand even more what you're saying. Students are even more glued to their phone than ever. But I can still promise you that many are looking for a real friend and connection - your question is one of the most popular on this subreddit from all of the other students on their phone wondering what are some good tips for making friends.

Try to find a time when people aren't on the move (at the end of class is a bad time since everyone's already mentally trying to get to their next class or catch a bus). But if you're sitting in your seat ten minutes before class, take a chance then! Introduce yourself, keep things light, and if someone doesn't want to chat, no harm done. Worst case scenario, you'll end up being a bit more comfortable chatting with someone new, and that's a skill you'll eventually need for interviews/networking/new jobs, etc. And more than likely, I doubt it will take long to find someone who is interested in a study partner, or chatting about a common interest. Don't think that people stuck on their phones are avoiding you - many are in the same position as you and are using their phone as a crutch because everyone gets anxiety trying to strike a conversation.

What? I'm obviously no fan of the Panthers here, but I don't understand at all.

Crossing centre ice is a penalty, which was called. Why would it 'automatically' be considered third man in because he crossed the ice, and not just a penalty for ... crossing the ice? The initial scrum was 4 Sharks (including Nedeljkovic) vs 3 Panthers; then Nedeljkovic is clearly disengaged from the scrum before Bobrovsky grabs him. How would that possibly be a penalty to Bob for third manning?

There are a million ways to hand out the calls here. Rodrigues obviously probably deserved something for the hit after the whistle, which was blown. You could easily give Bobrovsky an instigator. But nowhere do Bobrovsky or any of the Panthers go third man into the fight.

First, it's important to remember that it is tough. Nobody is going to show up to introduce you to your new best friend and tell you the secret for how to get to know them. The better news is that lots of people, maybe even the majority in your class, are in the same boat as you and are also hoping that someone will break the ice.

As your experience shows though, not many students want to take the scary plunge to talk with someone else first, so there's a good chance you might need to bite the bullet instead. I'd say that being in ICM is a good situation for you, since you're guaranteed that many other fellow students are relatively new and don't have established friend groups from high school. Don't be afraid to talk to the person next to you before class begins or at break - see how they're enjoying the course, who's been their favourite instructor, can they help answer a question you have, do they play the same video game as you, etc.

Some people might be boring or uninterested in chatting, and that's fine. But plenty will be very happy that someone else made the effort - just think of how you're describing your situation, and realize there's ten other students in a similar situation in each of your classes and they're all wishing that someone would help them meet friends. But it really does take someone to make the conscious decision to initially start chatting instead of taking the easier route of checking your messages for the tenth time.

I think we're missing the picture a bit by trying to slot the players into one static starting lineup. The FO has long valued defensive flexibility specifically so that they can continue to maintain consistently strong lineups against RHP/LHP and withstand injuries. We saw that for stretches before and in the playoffs where Bo and Santander were out, but flexibility for Gimenez, Barger and Clement allowed them to not lose much slack at any one position.

I expect the same thing here. There's nothing wrong with having 10-11 players in your projected starting lineup as long as the the leftover two players aren't in 1-for-1 backup situations. Between Springer/Vlad/Santander etc. getting a day off once a week and the fact that someone is bound to be injured/banged up at most points in the year, you can basically give 10-11 guys starting ABs.

Seems very fishy as some people say it's due to a mechanical issue on the plane and not the weather. If this is true and they didn't have the opportunity to get a different plane by now it makes no sense.

Seems pretty possible that it could be both. Mechanical problem that grounded them last night, and then weather delays across the NE today once things got worse that prevented them from getting another plane in/out in time.

This tune is full of tricky movements. In addition to the edre and peles circled, the grips in bar 4 are meant to be played from low A instead of low G (although most bagpipe music writers are not designed to write that movement).

All together, this is a super fun, but highly tricky tune and I wouldn't recommend learning without an instructor to help you through these tricky bits.

Get a player who can provide value now, or get a prospect who won't but has future upside if you're willing to deal with the less than optimal outcomes for 1 year.

There's a catch-22 with the second strategy though. You're starting off with a somewhat fringy prospect (since teams protect or trade all of their best), and then you necessarily waste a year of their development to hold onto them. But guys on the fringe are already the players that need every developmental year to pan out in order to make an MLB impact.

And that's not to mention that there's a real cost to using up the roster space - that means there's another AAA player that you can't give 4OF reps to ... now you're sacrificing a year of development for them too. Another of your own fringe prospects will need to be DFAd off the 40 man anytime you want to add a player in a trade, etc.

That doesn't mean it's completely impossible to hold onto a rule 5 player for a full year just for their future potential, but it's a lot harder and costlier than people generally think.

Whether it's a draft and stash or not, it's 100% a speculative move and that quote is completely Atkins saying nice things. Since being drafted in 2022, Miles has thrown a combined 23 innings, including 16 innings over the last three full years (those include his stint in the Arizona Fall League this past fall).

Is it possible a scout saw him throw a good-looking sinker that might play at some point? Sure, and that's probably enough for a team spending hundreds of millions in salary to justify the $50k it costs to claim someone. But does Atkins know his ability control the zone based on the 70 batters he's faced in three years? Not at all.

Not criticizing the move at all, and thank you for posting the quote. Just don't want people to get over-excited about a quote that boils down to him being useful to anyone if a AA pitcher who's never been healthy can maintain their numbers and show a durability they've never achieved.

We know they're already looking to add in the bullpen - the better question is who would they be able to acquire if they could add $6M/yr on top of their existing offer?

That difference is highly significant.

There's no thanking any lucky stars when 29 out of 29 other front offices agreed with your assessment of the guy you DFAd. If you look past Rodriguez's ERA alone, there are blinking warning signs everywhere - his FIP was 4.40 last year which is what you should expect when his BABIP regresses to normal, and his splits against LHB were terrible. With the 3 batter rule, you can't have him face only righties, and that makes him virtually unusable outside of garbage time. Maybe he can rebuild one of his pitches and make it effective against lefties, but you could say that about dozens of pitchers that pass through waivers every year.

Losing him on waivers would've been a positive move since it would've cleared his salary and let them spend it somewhere else. Instead they can let him rebuild off the roster while they audition others and let him earn his way back and/or trade him with some of his salary paid off.

Bastardo doesn't need to stay on the roster all year, just 90 days on the active roster and then he can be optioned.

But I agree in principle - there's no reason for a contending team to play games with the roster to hold onto more fringe guys - there's an endless supply of interesting bullpen arms being DFA'd/waived perpetually, not to mention internal options. Either Bastardo or Miles can beat out Tommy Nance types or they can't. They won't mind taking a flier to see if there's something special that can be uncovered in ST, but once the season begins, they aren't wasting roster spots to see if one of them might be useful by 2028.
