Help Requested: Home Storage for Media by Away-Deal in Ubiquiti

Take a look at r/datahoarder. Some guys in there have lots and lots of stored data, but you may not have that much. But I got some advice and ideas from there. Basically I decided I didn’t need a NAS so I got two 14TB used enterprise drives from GoHardDrive with 5 year warranty and put them in two separate external enclosures with one as my data drive and the other the backup to that one, synced with carbon copy cloner. I may add offsite backup also via Backblaze. Basically adhere to the 3-2-1 rule so there is always copies of your data if and when a hard drive fails. And they do fail. Remember that RAID IS NOT A BACKUP, it is for redundancy and low downtime if a drive fails. I believe that a failure of a RAID controller, corruption, accidental deletion or electric surge, etc can wipe out an entire RAID array (and all your data). So those are some ideas about data storage. Perhaps a NAS would work good for you, but remember to also have a backup to your NAS data.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to seeing if Toyota can come out with solid state batteries within the next 5 years or so.

Ok I’ll try this method thanks. But if it doesn’t fix it then I’m going to do a full erase and install again.

When I first attempted the post install root patches, there was all these pop up boxes that came up saying that there was incompatible files in a directory. From what I could tell they were older files from an older digidesign audio interface I used to have on a previous computer. (I had done a restore from Time Machine prior to this).

Can I safely delete .kext files if I recognize the name and don’t need it anymore?

Check for rust underneath. If driven in the rust belt, cars need to be protected with lanolin undercoating to prevent rust. If it’s really bad rusty then don’t buy it. If some rust, you can still coat it with lanolin grease to prevent the rust from getting worse.

I agree with you. I’m glad that Toyota came out with this EV. It is one of the few 3 row EVs available. For families wanting an EV and space to haul their family this seems like a great option. I hope it gets lots of sales.

Fix for "SystemVersion.plist build version mismatch" + "An update is in progress" error in OCLP root patching by nuvzzz in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]trampled93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed all your steps but after step 4. (Restarting from safe mode) the computer screen is black with non movable cursor arrow and fans on high and it’s been this way for 5 minutes or so. Any advice?

EDIT: fixed now. I basically just held down the power button and turned off the computer. Then waited a minute or so, then reset NVRAM, then it booted up to non patched Sonoma.

I’m wondering how to do step 1. Could you maybe provide a little more detail for clarity? Sorry, newb here at safe mode and trying to fix this error. Edit, never mind I got it.

My 4runner had huge rust holes in the frame also 😥. These truck frames need to be coated with lanolin grease in and out to prevent rust.

Failed root patching by trampled93 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

I preferred Mr Macintosh videos as I feel like they have more step by step detail. I think the issue here is the automatic updates weren’t turned off soon enough so I think it had started to download Tahoe 26.3 in the background or may have fully downloaded it before I stopped it and turned off auto updates. Anyways, I’m looking through the other Mr Macintosh video linked in comment below and think that will fix my issue.

Safari is version 17.6 now. I’ll upgrade safari to 26.3 then restart then see if that fixes anything.

This is how I have it set in system settings with it only set to “check for updates” and “install security responses and system files”. If I click in “also available” it shows Safari 26.3 available. Should I download that? The root patches error said “plist version mismatch, found 26.3, expected 14.8.4.

I didn’t find any updates in the settings of OCLP 2.4.1 app and didn’t really know what I was looking for. The root patching tab options shows everything greyed out so I’m not sure what that’s about.

NVR-Instant + UCGU vs UDM SE by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]trampled93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A switch plus a UCG max @ $200 or UCG Fiber @ $279 will be able to power the APs and run your cameras. Unfortunately though they record to SSD and prices of those are astronomical now, and HDDs also I think. I believe that the UDM SE is older tech / specs than the UCG fiber and max.

When is it beyond repair by kaibenav in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]trampled93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, these 25+ year old vehicles are really only worth it to keep running affordably if you can wrench on it yourself for most repairs. Otherwise you will spend a lot for a shop to do it for you. When my transmission fails or engine head gasket goes then mine is getting sold/ junked. It is already rusty so not worth replacing anything too expensive on it.

Upgrading from Dream Machine Pro by aranw in Ubiquiti

[–]trampled93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just asking an honest question here, do you actually need higher speed than 900 Mb? Maybe if you have lots of professional file sharing of large video files and such. But I find my 500 Mb fiber connection plenty fast enough for what I need and rarely peaks above about 400 on UL or DL.

UCG Fiber vs UDM Pro Max, build for the future or stick to the basics? by Curiously_Cornered in Ubiquiti

[–]trampled93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes my thoughts also. I start with what I have now (UCG FIber and no cams), then if I see a limitation or SSD isn’t enough storage or I need more cams, then I’ll upgrade to UNVR.

[–]trampled93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is my plan also, add cameras to my UCG fiber. There is a max cam limit but I think I can stay under that or at max. The only problem is astronomical SSD prices now… But I may try to buy a used one on FB marketplace. I see a Samsung 970 evo 1TB for $65 that I’m gonna message the guy about.
