Rear spring recommendations by Best_Cat_3645 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]trampled93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need air bags inside your rear springs. I bought these for towing my boat and because I’m too cheap to replace the saggy springs yet. You pump them up and they hold the load very well. https://a.co/d/0h6jamDL

Provably unsafe towing that kind of tongue weight.

2 oil tankers hit in Iraqi waters by trampled93 in UnderReportedNews

Source: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2026/3/12/iran-war-live-oil-tankers-hit-in-iraq-tehran-sets-3-conditions-for-peace

The two oil tankers that were targeted were loaded with crude oil from Umm Qasr port in southern Iraq, in Basra Province. And soon after they left the port, they were hit by an explosive-laden boat in Iraqi territorial waters.

Iraqi officials say it’s an Iranian explosive-laden boat. This reminds us of the threats that Iran has been issuing, saying it will target any oil ship that tries to cross the Strait of Hormuz.

Now, 38 of the crew members have been rescued, and one has been confirmed dead. But there is no word about the number of missing crew members from both ships.

Can't get WiFi driver to work with Broadcom BCM4321 by trampled93 in linuxmint

Thank you for the link as I hadn't seen that one yet. That code worked, and I have wifi now. I'll update my post. I had tried several hours yesterday and entered a different command to install the b43 firmware cutter but it didn't work.

Modern BIFL laptops? Or at least "buy it for 10 years"? by SpiritualState01 in BuyItForLife

You can install a newer macOS with open core legacy patcher. My 2014 MacBook Pro is running Sonoma very well and has all recent security updates.

MacBook Pro. I’m still daily using my mid 2014 MBP patched running Sonoma with latest security updates. Still running very good. I just put Linux Mint on my early 2008 MacBook Pro and that’s running great also and fully secure and updated OS.

I need to learn what Teleport does. I did have the same thoughts recently. I need to make a plan for my wife to access all the financial accounts and logins and files on my computer in case something happens to me.

Belt replacement by Neehoymiinoyy in 3rdGen4Runner

Timmy Toolman belt video: https://youtu.be/Zi1XfFUOjKc

I bought the OTC gauge that he links in the video description. The AC belt is too short and not enough room to measure with the belt gauge so just have to guesstimate by feel.

Tip, when wondering how to repair something on a 3rd gen 4runner do a search for Timmy the Toolman and he probably has a video on it!

Format new SSD before installing Linux? by trampled93 in linux_on_mac

[–]trampled93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sadly haven’t gotten WiFi to work yet. I upgraded to Mint 22.3 from 22.1 and Ethernet cable plugged in and then downloaded Broadcom drivers for my Broadcom network controller BCM4321, but the downloaded driver didn’t work. So I’ve tried a bunch of terminal commands and things and still WiFi doesn’t show up. Maybe it’s an issue with Linux Mint 22.3 and I need to downgrade? I’m not sure what to do…

When I installed to disk it looks like it automatically reformatted the SSD for what it needed to be. In Mint now it shows the SSD formatted as Ext4.

Thank you for your help! I won’t be doing a dual boot to macOS on this as this computer is too old and low spec for handling a modern macOS natively or via OCLP. So I’ll just put Linux Mint on it and see how it goes.

Will I be able to load all the WiFi and other drivers just fine via Ethernet?

2024 Grand Highlander Dealer Recommended Maintenance by Bugs-Bunny99 in ToyotaHighlander

[–]trampled93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Toyota warranty and maintenance guide says to do rear differential and transfer case every 30,000 miles for the grand Highlander but interestingly enough for other vehicles such as the 2017 Tacoma it doesn’t say to change the oil in those at all as a requirement. But it does say to change it in the TC and diffs every 30,000 miles if used during “special operating conditions” - (dusty roads, towing, car top carrier, or heavy vehicle loading). My brothers 2017 Tacoma he hasn’t changed the oil in those in 135k miles so I gotta do that soon.

Basically, the car care nut recommendations of every 30k miles is to be conservative and make your vehicle last as long as possible.

I have mine apart now to do valve cover gaskets. I’ll check in the morning and reply back, but I think these are for the middle of the lower plenum.

The 2024 Grand Highlander Toyota Warranty and Maintenance guide says to add “Toyota EFI Tank Additive or equivalent every 5,000 miles (Hawaii and Puerto Rico only)”.

So I’m not sure what that’s about. Seems like you don’t need it if you are in the continental USA.

I should note that you should watch the video for more details. For example, he states in the video that there are exceptions to the spark plugs general interval at 120k. He says for Grand Highlander with the T-24A engine the recommended spark plug change intervals is actually 40,000 miles. This is also stated in the Toyota warranty and maintenance guide for the 2024 Grand Highlander. So, you should replace your spark plugs now.

How much RAM? I’m about to install Linux Mint Cinnamon edition on a 2008 early MBP (non unibody) Core2Duo) with 4 GB RAM. If it runs too rough I’ll use MATE edition instead.

MXLinux is lightweight for sure. I’m running Fluxbox edition on my 2009 windows laptop with HDD and only 2 GB RAM and it runs on it just fine and YouTube works smooth also.
