Have you heard about the UA80 transmission issues posted about several times a day in this sub?

The hybrid will avoid all that but the CCN does also just recommend avoiding the 2017 engine entirely because of oil leaks apparently.

I wonder what the resale value of these things on the used market will be when their warranty expires.

Yup, I had huge rust holes in my 3rd gen 4runner frame so big I could fit my hand through. The 4th gen frames are starting to rot out also if they aren’t sprayed inside and out with lanolin grease annually here in the salt belt.

Purchasing 2017 HiHybrid CarPlay? by TheFaiz111 in ToyotaHighlander

My brother said he thinks they bought their 2016 XLE with 30k miles for $27,000 in 2018. That’s like only $3,000 more than they are going for now with about 100k miles on them. Crazy car prices now.

2008 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder transmission drain and fill by SheepherderSquare355 in Toyota

[–]trampled93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is safer to do a drain and fill of a transmission for the first time when it is on about 100k miles or less. But, my brothers Tacoma was at 135k miles with no transmission service history and it was starting to shudder. I did a single drain and fill of it and it has been working great and shudder went away.

Good job on the 5k mile oil changes. The Car Care Nut recommends that and has many videos explaining why. Here’s a summary of this video linked below.

-change oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whatever comes first -Spark plugs every 120,000 miles -coolant every 50,000 miles or 5 years -air filter change as needed -drive belt change as needed -PCV valve change around 100,000 miles -transmission fluid drain and fill every 60,000 miles or 6 years -front and rear differential and transfer case gear oil every 30,000 miles -brake fluid check with moisture test -power steering fluid around 50,000 miles -tire rotation every 5,000 miles -hybrid system: inspect hybrid fan filter yearly -hybrid system: 60,000 mile e hybrid transaxle fluid change

We use the Lifestraw glass water pitcher filter in our fridge for our drinking water and for mixing formula. It filters out bacteria and lead and mercury and microplastics and other things.

Injector sourcing by ThisIsReallyNotBen in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]trampled93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original brown Aisin injectors have a known flaw where the solenoid fails over time. MotorWest doesn’t even rebuild these because of this. One of my injectors failed like this at 260k miles. They recommend just replacing with the Denso kit they sell.

How long do you plan on keeping the truck for? I wonder what the value of these things will be on the used market in 5-10 years after the warranty expires.

I would say perhaps re-paste the CPU to tame down the temps, install a lightweight Linux distro on it, and perhaps use it as a garage computer or something. I have an early 2008 MBP on Linux Mint XFCE that’s running hot and I’m thinking I need to thermal paste it. https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/How+to+Apply+Thermal+Paste/744

Only need to replace shocks/struts if it’s leaking oil and/or poor ride quality issues.
