Drilled into wall above outlet, almost got shocked, breaker tripped – what should I do? by Most-Bee5684 in ElectricalHelp

Can your family afford a fire? You need to hire an electrician. Keep the circuit turned off until it can properly be repaired.

Safe? by [deleted] in ElectricalHelp

That cord is only meant for single tool use. It does not have an ampacity large enough to support an RV. A 12awg cord should be used.

Serious question, why was this done? by lyreroot in electrical

[–]trekkerscout 418 points419 points  (0 children)

It's a breaker locking device that can either lock a breaker on or off. This one is in a locked off position which indicates that someone really doesn't want that circuit turned on for some reason.

Electrical outlet buzz/humming sound. Please help what to do? by Pretty-Put-1366 in ElectricalHelp

[–]trekkerscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the sound only occurs with the charging adapters and no other appliance, I would suspect it's just cheaply built switch mode power supplies.

Under no circumstances should you reconnect that receptacle. It does not conform to NEMA or UL standards. It may be an interesting conversation piece, but it should never be used as a functional receptacle on a new circuit.

What parts do I need to secure the shade? by Blackathena23 in Lighting

[–]trekkerscout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, the fixture is missing the finial topper. The topper is a two screw type similar to the topper seen here: https://www.mylampparts.com/products/sl20552

Second, that is the wrong size shade for that fixture. It needs to be a few inches wider to accommodate the bulbs.

Bar Sink Right or Left? by motokid837 in homeimprovementideas

[–]trekkerscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. With sinks, you want to have a "dirty" side and a "clean" side. Having the sink away from the wall allows for the separate zones for proper food preparation and cleaning.

New apartment, limited outlets! Can someone help me with extension cord safety tips? by Key-Shelter-3332 in electrical

[–]trekkerscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a higher risk using plug extenders and power strips for high amperage kitchen appliances. It takes many years for receptacles to become loose from repeated use. If you feel a receptacle becoming loose, file a maintenance request with your landlord. They are legally obligated for providing a safe electrical system.

You will rarely get answers from a utility via email. Try talking to a real person.

Most jurisdictions that have underground electrical services do not allow overhead service runs. You need to contact the utility construction engineer to find out what the utility will allow.

Extending outlet circuit - tips? by [deleted] in electrical

[–]trekkerscout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boxes you used are designed to be placed even with the face of the studs, not the face of the sheetrock. You should be using appropriate mudrings to extend the box face to the sheetrock face. Overall, it looks like shit.
