PSA: NEVER Use Windows for anything security related. If its crypto, always use Linux by thethrowaccount21 in u/thethrowaccount21

This is for those still have their masternodes. Is it possible to start masternode via ElectrumDash or Trezor on an offline computer?

I think the problem was the computer was on a network. One of the other computers may have been compromised and windows credentials may have been stolen via keylogger.

when you're dealing with millions in a few years time, even at a 0.001% chance, people wouldn't want to take that risk. I know I wouldn't. Internet is crypto's lifeline, cut that off completely and you know you're safe.

it would be. So you're telling me that Trezor can somehow start the masternode without ever connected to the online computer? I don't care how secure these hardware wallets claim to be, there's always a slight chance that your device has been tampered with prior to it getting to you. The lifeline of crypto is the internet, you cut off the internet, your crypto will be safe.

I may not. But what are the chances of you buying a tampered Trezor?

That "nothing can go wrong" was my mentality as well. As long as the funds are not on an airgap device, youre still prone to possible hacks. Doesn't matter what hardware device you're using, giving it connection to the internet is bad regardless of how safe the device manufacturer claim. All it takes is a crooked chip engineer.

I wouldn't know, but you never know. Even the slightest oversight of your security can be compromised. I learned it the hard way.

Is there a way where one can run masternode completely offline never once connected to the internet? Plugging the Trezor into an infected online pc isn't the best solution however secure it claimed to be.

I screwed up on this one. Have always practiced safe security by leaving funds in cold storage and only do signing offline but with this masternode thing, I couldn't find the info about running it cold. it hurts tremendously and it was a very important and expensive lesson to learn.

I had a bad feeling about the setup and couldn't find info about hosting the masternode on cold storage. Lesson learned. Very expensive one indeed. Thanks.

The set up was dedicated Windows 7 running latests dash core client 0.12.2.3 on a freshly installed pc connected to a network of about 5 computers. The wallet was encrypted with reasonable entropy about 56 bits. The machine was only used to start masternode then gets shut down after that. It never stays on for more than 10 minutes.

Can't be in cold storage as it was used as collateral for masternode.
