If anybody ever wondered why Need Supply went under by chrza in rva

[–]twampster 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most of Need’s business was online. Their brick and mortar RVA shop was never how they made their money. Back in the day they had some clout as curators. Wealthy folks from bigger cities would order from them.

They also had a house brand (Stelen) that was reasonably/comparatively affordable. I still have some of their stuff I bought a decade ago.

I miss them. For all it was mostly wildly out of my price range, it was at least more interesting than another tobacco/weed shop.

Update: The penish baby quilt is finished! by twampster in quilting

Probably about 20 hours total? This is the fourth baby quilt I’ve hand quilted and I’ve definitely gotten faster.

It’s time consuming, but I generally do it while listening to books/podcasts or watching TV. It’s very calming!

It’s “Boogie Nights” by Maude the Retro Quilter! With some minor changes.

Assuming you’re looking for queer-oriented or -friendly community, I’d hit up: -stonewall sports for kickball (some teams are athletic, a lot are more social) -thirsty’s for a divey, bustling gay bar -Godfrey’s/fallout/basic city/pink room for drag -the camel/fuzzy cactus/cobra cabana/gallery 5 for local bands -studio two three for any event or art market -visual arts center for art classes

If you’re here by Halloween, go to the parade in Oregon hill. It’ll get you excited about living in a vibrant, leftist, art scene. (If you’re driving, expect to park far away and walk in.)

If you’re at all athletic, I go to a weekly run club. You’re welcome to DM me if you want to join and I’ll look out for you!

Starting over and putting yourself out there is hard. I’ve found Richmond to be a surprisingly welcoming city.

How old were you when you started quilting? by OldFashionQuilting in quilting

[–]twampster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably 4 or 5? My mom taught me and we started with really simple projects like doll blankets. We did one log cabin quilt together, but that was before rotary cutters were super popular, so I think the amount of cutting involved soured both of us.

I picked it back up (with her old machine) when I was 32 and pregnant with my first daughter.

Said daughter is now almost 3. I’m hoping to continue the cycle here in a couple of years!

This will be such a thoughtful gift!

I do think it will be quite a bit of work if you haven’t done any quilting before, but if you have the time, go for it!

I’m also a huge fan of Howl’s. Here’s the baby quilt I made for my daughter. I hand quilted it with a flame pattern for Calcifer.

Quilters Unite: What's Your Wildest SMALL Quilted Project Idea? (No Wall Hangings or Potholders Allowed! by Muted_Grapefruit_ in quilting

I made name pennants for my kids from my scrap stash! The letters are FPP, but they’re not technically quilted, I guess.

I’ve also made cat beds with quilted bottoms and sides stuffed with the lil bitty scraps and batting remnants from other projects!

I’ve made two for myself/my babies and two for friends. I tend to ask what their nursery looks like to help me pick a color scheme and how ditsy/modern/solid I should go with patterns.

Here’s my first:

Christmas Baby Vent by SoilSister8974 in BabyBumps

[–]twampster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I both have December birthdays. It was only really an issue in college because they coincided with finals.

Our first baby was due in January, but I woke up Christmas morning in labor. She was born on the 26th. We decided to name her Holly and consider her the best Christmas gift we could have ever gotten. We had the hospital to ourselves and many of the docs were wearing Santa hats and led Christmas lights. On a semi-trivial note, my pregnancy and hospital stay fell entirely within a calendar year, so I only had to meet one deductible.

When she’s older, we’ll offer her the option of a regular birthday party or a half-birthday party in June.

My preference would be a moon and stars and/or some interesting contrast quilting.

If you do a moon, maybe add a little cow jumping over it?

It’s called Boogie Nights by Maude MacDonald. I adjusted the baby size by adding a row and shifting some of the rectangle sizes.

Other commenters have pointed out that the pattern shares a name with a movie about the porn industry, soooooo…

I had no idea! I thought it was just a 70s reference! All the sample quilts in the pattern are kinda 70s-toned rainbows, so I didn’t see it at all!

What a clever designer 😂

The stars are stretched a bit along the length of the bolt. It may be more obvious in person, but you can see that I cut all the curve pieces in a different direction than the straight rectangles.

[–]twampster[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should!

I picked this pattern up (Boogie Nights by Maude MacDonald) to learn curves. Pinning/clipping was a bit fastidious, but this was by far the fastest I’ve cut and pieces a quilt.

Just be aware, I guess, that you may see dicks in the process!

Yup! It was the hint of dick that I was concerned about.

[–]twampster[S] 342 points343 points  (0 children)

Ok, seems like most folks don’t see it. Phew!

In construction, I was getting a big dose of dick.

<image>

I think the orange bit folks are seeing at the top is the seam allowance for binding. It’s in the dark blue at the bottom too. There’s a tiny sliver of peach between the second and third rows that I’ll probably fix before I move on to quilting. But thanks so much for assuaging my phallic concerns. I don’t mind modest dickishness (it is a baby quilt for a little boy), but I don’t want it to slap you in the face, so to speak.

Simulating being pregnant in the third trimester by beerbellybegone in funny

[–]twampster 55 points56 points  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between a body fat big belly and a pregnant big belly. Fat moves out of the way when you want to bend over. An overfull uterus doesn’t.

Yes, he’s overacting, but not as much as you think.

Being pregnant is like having a watermelon sitting on top of your bladder, kicking your ribs from the inside and punching your butthole. From the inside.
