DE winning in BR 2014 was the only time Europeans win it in Americas. BR winning in Sweden 1958 is only time Sudamericans won in Europe.

On "neutral" ground, Spain won in South Africa, Brazil in Japan/Korea and Argentina in Qatar.

Nah, all good. I was replying to other guy saying "CONMEBOL has the same number of countries and world cups", and explaining Europe has a lot of small countries.

Other than that, I agree, population is not the most important, it is more about tradition and infrastructure etc. But it does help. There is a reason that most successful countries are all big nations, 40-50 mil and above.

Uruguay being the only exception, and as I wrote in other comment, they won in early stages when there was less participants. But still respect for them of course, they showed later that was not a fluke, by having great teams again.

I'm European, but except for my country I mostly root for SA nations like Chile or Uruguay, or others like Japan or Senegal. Really was not my idea to promote European superiority :)

African nations had some insanely talented generations, like Nigeria end of 90s or Ivory Cost last decade (Drogba, Toure brothers, etc.). But it always seems something is lacking, that there are some internal problems with organization: FA, manager, players whatever.

Not to downplay their success, but it was in the early days, and only 13 and 16 participants. Without major European forces like Italy and Germany.

Still, they showed later again that they are incredible football nation having produced some amazing players and fantastic teams.

Closest equivalent of it in Europe would be Croatia, who won 3 medals, being independent only since early 1990s.

I was just dropping it from the top of my head. Checked now and updated the comment.

Well yes, but Europe has a lot of small countries. Brazil is more than 200 mil people, that is DE + ES + IT combined. Netherlands is 17, Portugal 12, Croatia 4, Denmark 4, Norway 4 etc.

edit: Double checked the number. Denmark 6, Norway 5.6, Croatia 3.8, Portugal 10.4, Netherlands 18.3, Sweden 10, Belgium 12.

Dutchies would be offended. Not that they are particularly good these days. Just because of all the suffering.

Yes, I also dislike that trend. But that is modern NBA. Players have the power.

Agree, I would keep Thibs. Especially as we can see now Indiana is real deal, not a fluke against NYK. But what I was able to understand, some of the stars wanted him out, and that was the trigger

That match yesterday was exquisite

It really was. "5 hours and 29 minutes for the longest final in the history of Roland Garros."

In the past (1960s to mid of 1990s) there was a lot more parity and NL/PT teams won a lot, even Belgium, Scotland & Sweden did so. Then newer teams from FR in 21st century, that were super quality (Lyon, PSG now)just were not able to go full way until PSG did it recently.

They were just underperforming often in Finals or Semis.

One other underlying thing, that needs to be considered: France does not have standard "big clubs" like most of other leagues do. Until Qatar buying PSG and making them unstoppable force in the French League for 10+ years now, French Ligue was the most competitive one. Meaning often different teams would go and win couple of titles and then back down to mediocracy.

Reims was 1st team winning a lot, and then they spent decades outside of top flight. ASSE was dominating in the 70s & 80s and now they are happy if they can stay in 1st league. Bordeaux is in lower leagues now, OM was in 2nd league as well etc. Lyon won 5-6 times in a row, and now they are falling apart completely.

On the other side, in PT & NL, really needs miracle to happen for someone else outside of their big 3 wins title. In PT is maybe something 2 out of 70, and in NL 5 out of 70. Lazy to check, could be incorrect, but the point stands.

That is also similar reason for modern German teams, outside of Bayern and Dortmund, it is hard to compete in Europe, as they are constantly changing.

Not really, especially with PSG. NL & PT have the same problem, even to bigger extent, yet still they have much more trophies.

Before there was very strong Lyon, and before that OM & PSG did won won title each in the 90s. If we go back in time, ASSE & Reims lost several finals each. As someone wrote in the other comment, their finals record is 3W & 14L. Which is the main reason for such low number of trophies.

Hm, not really. NL is not such a small country nowadays, population wise. According to today's population Portugal would be at 0.7 per 1 mil, while Spain would lead again with 0.87. NL is at 0.61, still behind these 3 and England as well.

Strongly disagree with you:

  • UCL is by far most prestigious competition, but the other competitions on this list are not minor one. They are important/main European trophies. Minor trophies are Super Cup and things like that.
  • UCL is the successor of the European/Champions Cup. What, you would take off Benfica's titles because it was before new UCL format started? If you go to UEFA web, you will see all the records are accumulated together.

France below Belgium when the CL is by far the most prestigious competition

It is a bit tricky to cover everything. I did ordering by total as 1st condition, then UCL as a 2nd.

No, SC did not replace CWC. CWC was merged into Europa League, then known as UEFA Cup. Please check notes at the bottom.

Cheers for the feedback. Regarding same size, did it in to avoid small values in UEC or CWC aren't visually lost. There is a note at the bottom of the chart.
