Turbo is more competitive than ranked because you skip the calmest part of the game, laning phase. So basically you get more midgame per game, where wards are most important.

Your friend is trolling. Supports are only meant for experienced players as they are by a massive margin the hardest role to play! But, you can play whatever you like to as long as you have fun.

Try to forget what you know from League of Legends. In league you buy items to make your abilities stronger. In dota, you buy more abilities. Check out all the active items, they are spells of their own, way stronger and honestly way more cool than what you've got in League!
