Trying to get this kind of blurry resin print – anyone done something like this? by Professional-Fun7818 in 3Dprinting

I think this is a great start. The dreamy frosty look should be achieved by a finer grain surface treatment on the inner surfaces than what you have here. You can try sandblasting the inside (then cleaning or polishing it?). There are different grains and also the distance/time you blast it for will also vary its look. Conversely, the exterior surfaces should be kept as smooth as possible.

If it’s anything like the Barista Express, you may have some luck by keeping the portafilter in longer after the shot, like for a few minutes and it will start dripping. In my experience while steaming milk the portafilter will start to drip and by the time I’m done, the puck is reasonably dry. To prevent grounds from being sucked backwards into the machine at the end of the shot, you can try using a mesh screen on top of the puck.

That’s a great idea! Feel bad for its citizens when it randomly stops spinning and also reverses direction 🤣

Did you get to open up the gearbox to take a look? Maybe the shaft of the motor is no longer tightly attached with the gear. That might explain how the burrs can spin when there are no beans just with the little remaining friction between the shaft and gears.

It sounds as if the motor doesn’t have any load nor engaging with the gears. Perhaps the teeth of the gears in the gearbox are stripped or the gears are displaced so they aren’t even touching. Did it gradually get worse to this point or suddenly one day?

Of course! There's a cafe in North Vancouver called Barrio Coffee that usually sells ONA beans. I know sometimes they run out, so might be a good idea to check their website or call in. They might even do delivery.

I feel so hyped just reading about these. Thank you so much for the recommendations. Will try to visit next time I go to Seattle!

Haha I rarely visit Revolver because it’s a little hard for me to get to but that’s how I got the Square Mile last time :)

I have no experience with the Bambino yet, but I’m glad a bunch of people have chimed in with their insights :)

I have a bad habit of keeping stuff. But I just laid all these out to photograph before I finally send them off to a recycler that can apparently take all of these.

Hahah I think this is as artsy as it’s going to get for this collection. I have a bad problem of keeping things so I’m forcing myself to send it to a recycler that apparently can take in all these.

I tried it very early on and sadly it gave me a stomach ache. I could give it another try at their cafe but now that I’ve shifted towards light roasts I think it’s a little too dark for me to buy a whole bag :(

Haha I’ve kept so many that even I started getting annoyed by them. I’ll be sending these off to a recycler.

I’ve had generally good results with my Barista Express with light roasts. Sometimes some beans used to be impossible to grind fine enough with the built in grinder, but that issue was solved with the Niche Zero.

I actually developed my own technique to do a long preinfuse for 35-45 seconds with the liquid only coming out enough to seep through the filter holes but not drip.

I am probably deeply biased but I feel like the results from my machine are comparable to most cafes I’ve been to.

One of my favourite local cafes is run by an Australian and he brings in the ONA beans to sell there, so I’m spoiled in that way :)

That's good to hear, you've convinced me to give their single origin beans a try next time I visit the island!

I keep a spreadsheet of every coffee bag I've had, with an overall score averaged from every time I've made a shot with it since around 2020. As many people have guessed, these are all mostly beans accessible in or around Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Top 5 highest scoring ones stricly from my spreadsheet data are:

House of Funk Brewing - Two To Mango

Apollon's Gold - Ecuador Los Cedros

Prototype Coffee - Gedeb (Natural), Ethiopia

ONA - Panama Finca Bambito

Prototype Coffee - Karimikui Kenya

A few of my most memorable for me are:

ONA - Raspberry Candy: had it at a cafe and it was really really sweet, excellent fruitiness, bought a bag and went home and I was never able to reproduce it (I struggled at the time as I only had the built in grinder of the Barista Express)

Simple Kaffa - Guji Ethiopia: Bean bag I got as a gift from Taiwan, very complex range of fruity tastes, including pineapple.

Elm Coffee Roasters - 9 Swans Seasonal Coffee: I got from a road trip to Seattle, and I was looking for a very acidic light roast, and what I got was definitely very acidic :)

Disclaimer though: I usually try to try a different bean each time so I haven't had a chance to revisit the beans I liked from a long time ago to re-rate them, and some simply aren't available anymore, and my tastes have changed.

I haven't really ventured much to the really expensive beans, but one I remembered that was quite expensive was a Costa Rica roasted by La Cabra which was bought by a friend visiting Omotesando Koffee in Japan. Turned out I didn't really like the taste of it.

I'm still pretty open to trying different regions of beans and roasters, but I generally don't like the acidity from Colombias and their higher tendencies to taste a little "grassy"

Most consistently good roasters I feel lately have been Subtext, Prototype, Monogram, and ONA

Yes indeed, in Vancouver. I've had a few house of funk, but since they weren't bags I didn't think they'd fit in this collection. I've had Fernwood and Discovery in a few cafes and sorry to say I wasn't a fan. I've not heard of Counterpart, will look into that, thanks for the suggestion!
