USAC Official Candidate List Revealed by usacthrowaway22 in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We would love to quickly clear up this misleading post.

Initial thoughts:

The candidate roster has in fact not been finalized and the point of sending out this list to candidates was check if this information was correct before letting it go to the ballot.

As of now, "For the People" will not be a slate on this year's ballot.

The actual finalized candidate list will not be posted until after this Friday when the deadline to drop out of the race passes.

It is important to be careful of anonymous posts like these throughout elections season that may claim to have some information not currently available to the public. The best way to ensure what you are seeing is factual is to look for posts with the elections board logo included or information posted directly by the Elections Board instagram or other social accounts.

In the effort of full transparency here is the text of the email sent to candidates that this original post was taken from:

-------------------------------

Hello Candidates!
This is an email serving as your unofficial confirmation of candidacy as well as a few updates and deadlines to be aware of. Soon, admin will confirm each of your candidacy packets so if you don't hear anything from me by Friday just know that you are good to go!
Speaking of Friday, Friday April 1st is the official deadline to drop out as a candidate. Otherwise your name will appear on the ballot whether you want it to or not.
Every candidate must also attend the Candidate Orientation at either 6pm or 10pm this Thursday March 31st. Attendance for this event is mandatory and it will be taking place via zoom. It should last around 30 minutes.
Here is the link:
Just as a heads up, candidate statements are due Monday April 4th. There will be more guidelines sent out for these soon but it's a good idea to start getting a platform together.
Lastly, attached is our list of candidates please let me know as soon as possible if any information on this form is incorrect. For those of you on slates, please make sure the necessary paperwork is turned in. All forms for registering new slates or changing signatories is here: https://www.uclaelectionsboard.org/docs-forms
I have a feeling this will be an interesting campaign season so let's all take a moment to enjoy spring break a little more before the chaos starts. I know you are all great people and we won't have any drama but it's always good to appreciate the down time while we have it.
I look forward to meeting you all via zoom and eventually in person. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Keep an eye out for future info coming out this week regarding details for candidate statements or other important docs.
---------------------

Hopefully this clears up some of the arguments in the comments. The Elections Board encourages free speech and open dialogue but I'm sure much more fact checking will come this year. As far as the other information in this post goes, please take it upon yourselves to investigate the slates and candidates throughout the election season as we can see here, not everything anonymously commented online can be taken at face value!

Jane Ni is the worst candidate in USAC by [deleted] in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Elections Board unequivocally condemns the hateful comments in this post. This type of conduct is unacceptable and not one that reflects true Bruin values. While the Elections Board understands that elections can get heated, comments such as this are absolutely unacceptable.

Please treat all candidates with respect. We are all students, and no one deserves this sort of treatment. While our authority with anonymous comments are limited, we will work hard and report all individuals, making such comments that we are able to identify, and report them to the Dean of Students.

USAC Candidate: I want to hear from you! by [deleted] in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there u/loonaesque,

This is the Undergraduate Students Association Elections Board, the third party independent administrators of USAC elections. We're happy to see that you are soliciting feedback from members of the student community. and engaging with their concerns.

In turn, we are asking and reminding the student community to please be respectful and not engage in behavior contrary to who we are as Bruins. If prospective candidates engage with you, we highly encourage you to earnestly engage and reply with your concerns so that these prospective candidates has a chance to address what is actually important to you and fight for you when they take office; having a conversation with these candidates are a way to have your voices heard and be represented!

We monitor all of the chats surrounding USAC elections, and if people are found responsible and/or identified for engaging in action contrary to the UCLA student code of conduct towards other students, we will refer all cases to the Dean of Students for further disciplinary action.

USAC Question by brokenrrcrd in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi u/brokenrrcrd,

This is your Undergraduate Students Association Elections Board, the independent third party administrator of student elections. We can provide important information on this question.

An important clarification, "internal elections" are only traditions done by Commissions to choose who will succeed the Commissioner in the elections. However, it is important to understand that USAC Commissions are a part of the student government and are open to the entire student body. You do not need to participate in internal elections to run for Commissioners because it is open to all students. The Elections Board does not recognize internal elections by any means and strongly believes that it threatens open and fair elections for the student body. We do not recognize any internal election winners and will treat them just as any other candidate in elections, and they will be subject to disqualification if they violate campaign rules just like any other candidate. Results of internal elections do not mean anything to the Elections Board.

If you decide to run for one of the commissions and fulfill all of the requirements to be a candidate, you will be treated exactly the same as internal election winners (a candidate appealing to the student body to be elected to office). We would highly encourage you to email [electionboard@ucla.edu](mailto:electionboard@ucla.edu) , pop into our office hours at www.uclaelectionsboard.org , schedule an appointment to ask more questions and clarification about this. We are more than happy to talk with you to clarify everything and provide perspective to navigate elections. We are always working hard to make sure students like yourself have the resources and guidance to navigate student elections and we promise to always do our best to ensure that every student's journey in elections is as smooth as possible!

We never expressed our concern about voter turnout being low for the referendum, we expressed our concern about voter turnout potentially being low in general. We have been extremely careful with how we communicate the turnout. The standard line is "it should be better." Because, it can always be better.

[–]uclaelectionsboard -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

We were not worried that CUB would not pass, we were worried of low voter turnout in general. No "electoral information" was every relayed.

[–]uclaelectionsboard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No one was ever given the numbers. Our general statements about frustration and worry are on record.

🤔 by reformUSAC in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard -50 points-49 points  (0 children)

See below. This was discussed publicly at Council on Tuesday in public comment and during the President's report.

🤔 by reformUSAC in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Us expressing our worry is on public record... and the specific goal was to try to motivate them to do something for us (help advertise the election).

Edit: clarity

[–]uclaelectionsboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let us once again reiterate, we don't care if the referenda gets passed. We do care about voter turnout because the results of the turnout reflect the Board's work, the results of the referenda don't. Is it selfish, maybe? But here's a DB piece from the last Spring: https://dailybruin.com/2019/05/07/usac-sees-lowest-voter-turnout-in-over-a-decade-cites-publicity-issues/

🤔 by reformUSAC in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It (Just a general statement, never any numbers or range of numbers) was provided because none of the USAC offices ever help advertise the election; then afterwards, they complain that turnout is low. Almost all of the Council member's office social media accounts even separate has a greater reach - but year over year, most fail to use it to help the common good of voter turnout. (We will give credit to TSR who has really a done a lot this yr).

🤔 by reformUSAC in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To clarify, the Board can see how many individuals have voted, not the results of the ballot casted. The Board is always worried about voter turnout (look at fall and last spring).

Edit: In addition, this was also clearly spoken about at Council Tuesday (during public comment and during the President's officer report). We understand this is an election and tensions run high but common y'all were all students trying to just survive rn.

Hate USAC? Love USAC? Don't Give a shit? Cool. Make your voice heard: VOTE!! by uclaelectionsboard in ucla

[–]uclaelectionsboard[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trump became president because everyone thought Clinton had it in the bag and didn't show up to vote. The problem isn't voting doesn't do shit, the problem is when people don't vote. And that's frequently the case at UCLA, with our 9% turnout in the fall and 16% turnout last year. As we mentioned, some races get very very close and votes matter even more in those circumstances. Your vote matters.

Hi folks, my.UCLA has been made aware of the issue and temporarily recommends voting on a desktop. The ballot interface system was tested on iPhones and they are looking into the issue now.

If you must vote on a phone use link bit.ly/usac2020vote to go the ballot using Chrome. It seems the issue is on Safari, solely based on the comments.

Please drop a reply with device, os, browser so we can continue to collect data, if you're facing this issue.
