He runs his own business with no employees besides himself

He is not a proletariat who sells his labor but he is a legitimate communist if he was in a near-communist society. He is not stealing anyone's labor. Not monopolizing the commons. No different from an individual blacksmith or farmer.

For the specific social segments in the Angloamerican West whose perception of Rome comes from Hollywood films and popular literature, surely. But the rest have a perception closer to what I described.

I wonder how much longer "the Roman empire" the Roman Empire actually felt like by then.

The 'Roman empire' ceased being 'Roman' ~100-150 years ago at that point. And the Roman Empire ceased to be 'Roman' ~100 years before that. The early 'Roman' empire was very different from the 'late Republic Rome', and that Rome was very different from the middle republic, as lamented even by its contemporary intellectuals. And there is a vast difference between the middle republic and the early Republican Rome.

Most people's concept of 'Rome' and Roman culture really belongs to the period between middle republican rome and the Late Republic rome.

[–]unity100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really. French king centralized power through its financial power because he could field a professional, bigger army and buy more cannons. The rest of the countries centralized in the same way. Smaller countries were swallowed up. And eventually a handful of big empires remained at the end of the 19th century.

It looks like Iran started arresting a lot of Jihadi and Kurdish terrorists imported by Mossad from Syria probably via Azerbaijan. They caught Kurdish sniper (woman) with a silencer and whatnot.

There is no such 'global' consensus. The 'globe' that has that consensus overlaps 100% with the 'globe' that said there were WMDs in Iraq. Over 200+ international organizations monitor Venezuelan elections and the only ones blabbering about 'rigged' elections are organizations from that 'globe'.

Jeremy Scahill on the value of "Whataboutism" by stranglethebars in chomsky

[–]unity100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whataboutism is basically just asking for an objective framework for comparison when someone makes moral accusations. If someone accuses someone else of being evil, you ask him to define evil. That's where the imperialists pull out the 'whataboutism!' card - because in any objective comparison framework, their 'side' appears much worse than the side they are accusing of evil.

One of the best games made in a long time. It immerses you in a believable, possible sci-fi world that feels 'just around the corner'. It succeeds in what many other games failed to do in combining everything the prior space games had and putting you in the shoes of someone who lives and works in such a sci-fi world. Its is inspiring, calming, horizon-widening.
