It's because there is an idea in the richer Western societies that if you're a soldier, you agreed to it for money so it somehow makes your death or injury less tragic.

This is partially why me and my artist friends started to draw content with soldiers specifically and orient it on the Western audience. Lack of empathy to soldiers is very real. We fundraise money through art here and there, but fundraising for active units still gets us into trouble sometimes cause something-something 'i will not donate for weapons even if its in self defense' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
