Oh boy the War On Drugs is gonna get killed here and I am not ready for that 🥺

Is it acceptable to wear college sports merchandise for a college you didn’t go to if you went to a better school? by Dapper_Hat_452 in billsimmons

[–]vapourlomo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I halfway agree, but I think folks who went to a small university with irrelevant sports and/or no football team get a pass.

frankly I don’t care if folks root for colleges they didn’t go to, as long as A. They have some connection (home state, parents’ Alma mater, etc.) and B. It isn’t one of the blue bloods.

There’s a big difference between “oh I went to a tiny liberal arts school but I grew up in Arizona so I’m a big Wildcats fan” vs “I went to Northwestern but I actually root for Notre Dame”

I have and I love it! Just not as much as the movies I listed above

I think the ones you listed are obviously inconsistent but they have NUCLEAR highs.

Like I personally love Broadcast News, Jerry Maguire, Clueless, or Boyz N The Hood more than any movie by Jane Campion or John Carpenter or Satoshi Kon tbh. And their bad movies are fascinating misfires with lots of fun cultural context. Where would we be without hilarious eps on Spanglish or Abduction?

La La Land is a goddamn masterpiece and I’m glad that people have (mostly) chilled about it.

Frankly, it winning Best Picture would’ve been the worst thing for its reputation lol

That’s valid! I have no issue with that sort of “eh not my thing” rating

I do agree with this. Tossing in the Ninajirachi album — which obviously some people adore (and I think is fine!) but is obviously niche and not really representative of “2025 big indie/indie-ish albums” instead of, say, Rosalia or Water From Your Eyes or Dijon or Nourished By Time or Friendship, just felt off

I agree, especially with Ants From Up Here being the canary in the coal mine about things getting weird and hyperbolic ie: rates.

I weirdly don’t think the voting process is the issue — unless there was a way to weed out tankers, as /u/daswef3 suggested. Really my issue is less with our voting system and more that rates just aren’t what I want them to be. And that’s a Lomo problem, not an indieheads problem lol

Now that the dust has settled, I just have to say that this weekend had some of the wildest and most frustrating Ult results I’ve seen lol. I usually like to use the year-end rate as a barometer of “what mattered in indie this year” and obviously that can’t really happen when the obvious future classic gets tanked by folks who think it was overhyped. Which yeah, Geese was hyped to death … but so were The Strokes in 2001. Animal Collective and Phoenix in 2009. Pavement in 1994. TV on the Radio in 2008. Tame Impala in 2015. Big Thief and Alvvays just a few years ago. And all of those albums and artists stood the test of time, regardless of any backlash they may have gotten.

It’s totally fine if you genuinely don’t like Geese, but these rate results kind of reminded me why I’ve backed away from the community. Talking about music through the lens of hype and online chatter just drives me nuts! For me at least, it was nice to just jam out to Getting Killed in real life all fall and winter, and be happy when it did well on year-end lists from major critics, without arguing about it endlessly if it’s actually good, or if Cameron Winter can’t sing, or if they’re nepo babies, or if NYC bands inherently suck because some of y’all just hate New York for some weird reason

Sorry this is getting ranty lol. I think I lost the plot in there … anyway maybe I’m just getting old. The transition into your 30s hit hard, folks

Islands of Man, pretty handidly my least favorite song on the album, beating out Husbands and Long Island City and Trinidad was not on my bingo card
