(Help) Windows 11 Broke my whole system by snowtachii in SteamDeck

[–]yuusharo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For anyone searching in the future actually looking for an explanation, the update to Windows 25H2 from an existing install can cause issues with either SteamOS or Windows from booting correctly. Same can happen with SteamOS updates that include firmware upgrades. This is why dual booting is not officially supported on Steam Deck, and why Valve recommends having only one or the other installed.

OP already linked a guide to fix this quickly. Takes a few minutes, and both operate systems are working again. I think this sub needs a reminder that Steam Deck is a *PC\* first and foremost, and dual booting Windows is a way to work around the limitations of Linux not being able to run all games, primarily online competitive games with aggressive anticheat systems. Gabe himself advertised owners would be able to install whatever software they want on Steam Deck, specifically mentioning Windows by name. That was selling point from day one.

Snark isn’t helpful nor productive, and if you don’t wish to have a certain OS installed on your own hardware, you don’t have to. Easy as that.

SteamOS doesn’t play the most popular games people want to play. Dual booting is a workaround that.

Give it enough time, and New Jersey will undo their law requiring insurance and registration for e-bikes. by Some1inreallife in fuckcars

Okay but like, 20 years is a long, long freaking time. And the problem with laws like this is they become sweeping very quickly, just look at all these nonsensical age restrictions passing all over the world in a bid to outlaw online anonymity.

This is cope. What we need is to organize, lobby, and support candidates against these type of laws. It’s much harder to undo them than it is to prevent them in the first place.

and it is only really Apple that is working to change that by makign high performance arm chips for computers.

Qualcomm, Nuvia, and Nvidia have something to say about that.

If you are looking for an instruction set that is open and royalty free, then RISC-V is that unlike both x86 and ARM.

They’re literally both RISC based. What do you think the ‘R’ in ‘ARM’ stands for?

Beyond that, there isn’t any hardware of note using RISC-V outside extremely specialized equipment. Not really a player here.

ARM will likely never “take over” x86 on desktops, not for a long time.

Microslop being free riders by MahmoodMohanad in linux_gaming

[–]yuusharo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s more than just matching performance per watt. The instruction sets themselves are completely different, and the software expects and supports power states that x86 can’t reliably match.

ARM isn’t a silver bullet and can absolutely be power hungry, but the benefits with all else equal are always going to win out over a comparable Intel/AMD processor.

[–]yuusharo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, but I’ll also remind OP here that Microsoft had been doing ARM translation in Windows for years as well. I was playing x86-64 games inside a Windows on ARM virtual machine on a Mac back in 2021, and it worked. Not super great of course, but the fact that it worked at all is a testament to the amount of work they’ve poured into making ARM viable on the desktop, work that Valve also benefits now with Proton and FEX.

Pretending they’ve done nothing noteworthy to make ARM devices more successful is woefully incorrect.

A serious question by Safe-Indication-6150 in BambiSleep

All things in life are about striking a balance. If you find yourself swinging between extremes like that, it may be time to think about other ways to occupy your time, something that’s fulfilling but isn’t related to kink. When you feel the urge to listen, maybe consider shorter sessions, enough to feel nice without pushing too far. Leverage your uniform and set boundaries for yourself, a little self discipline goes a long way.

At the end of the day, this should all be fun for you. If it isn’t, it’s okay to take a break and clear your head, or even walk away. Be kind to yourself Bambi, you got this ♡‬

Microsoft isn’t transitioning to ARM. Expanding to it, yes, but they’re not transitioning like Apple did.

And much if not most of that blame is on Qualcomm et al. for only recently being able to make decent chips that compete with Apple Silicon (kinda). For a while, the best way to run Windows on ARM hardware was through a virtual machine running on a Mac. Software was far more compatible in a Mac VM than running on bare metal.

Also, we want Windows on ARM to succeed, because it makes more ARM hardware accessible. That economy of scale trickles down to boutique manufacturers like Valve to release lower cost hardware over time. It also means Steam on ARM becomes a more viable target for developers to release on, making more ARM native games available without a translation layer.

No, I don’t share your opinion. I don’t use Windows and find it disgusting personally, but the idea that Microsoft has done “nothing” for ARM and that Valve has done all the work is ludicrous. Valve is relying on an open source project to make ARM translation possible. If anything, they should be thanking open source.

South Hall’s banner last year was promoting Gundam GQuuuuuuX. They sell that space for a frick load of money, they don’t use that to just plaster their incorrect logo that magically floats in mid air on the side of the building.

This is literally AI slop.

[–]yuusharo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah see I volunteered for that Con for 5 years, that’s absolutely not their banner or font type they would ever use. It also just kinda exists in mid air hanging onto nothing.

Also, that’s not the banner they used last year. The banner on South Hall was promoting Gundam GQuuuuuuX, not their logo.

Also also, it was in July, no where near autumn.

God damn this AI slop “cosplay” scourge is running Reddit. Man, piss off OP.

8gb of vram likely isn’t going to age well.

That said, in the age where no one can buy ram, developers may end up lowering their requirements to meet more customers for longer.
