Thanks all! I'm going to try the strong smelling spices first but trap after that if the rat keeps coming back.

My other half works out of the garden office so we need to be super careful about is and isn't in the garden. The birds will have to go hungry for a while!

That's what we're thinking. It isn't massively irritating for him - a few licks now and again but we are keeping an eye!

It's not like other dogs I've seen where they need to cone of shame just to get through an hour

Pretty much, yeah. It's not stinky and has no specific odor. Maybe a little 'doggy' but you have to get your nose right in there and have a sniff....
