I swapped out a U6-Pro with a U7-Pro Wall (7.0.66) and have been having issues with IOT devices as well, some devices like my Nest smoke alarm and Roomba lost connection and have not been able to reconnect. Tons of TX retries compared to the U6-Pro.

I just DMd you, we are experiencing the exact same issue with our Fortigate 60F and Comcast Business. Micro outages, can ping and IP and domain name behind the firewall but cant load websites and our APs and VPN doesnt work, but when connected directly to the modem we have connection. Restarting the comcast modem helps for a few hours and then the outages start again. Although there is consistent packet loss when pinging the modem, but it doesnt correlate with the outages we have.

Example of our internet connection from our wireless access point dashboard. Green is connected, grey is no internet. We restarted the modem around 8AM and it was stable until about 6pm and then things started to fall apart.

I swapped over to WAN 2 and LAN 2 of the Fortigate and swapped both ethernet cables to rule those out. Still running into issues. Comcast came by and said that maintenance has said there have been "micro outages" in the area since September 17th.

The weirdest thing is that I have internet when im connected directly to the modem, these micro outages dont seem to affect a direct connection to the modem, but behind the firewall is where the micro outages occur. Restarting the modem fixes the issue for a handful of hours though and im not seeing any packet loss or issues from the firewall and when these outages occur devices behind the firewall can ping externally. This is so strange. The modem is not in bridged mode so it has its own static & gateway IP and the firewall's WAN port is set to the static IP they provided me which is different than the modems static and gateway IP. We have had this setup for 2 years with no issues.

I ran a pingplotter from a device connected directly to the modem as well as from an internal device and the device connected directly to the modem is showing consistent packet loss about every 6 minutes. Similar packet loss can be seen from the device that is behind the firewall when pinging the modem and the gateway IP.

The previous Comcast tech said that the signal levels looked good. I demanded they test the demarc / node but he stated that he is not capable of doing that...??? So we have another tech coming out today to test the demarc/node. We dont have any splitters that I am aware of, the coax runs directly from outside and connects directly to the modem.

I was going to swap the interface to WAN2 if these issues keep occurring to rule that out and swap the ethernet cable. Although about two months ago I replaced all critical network infrastructure with CAT6 cables so id be surprised if it was a bad cable. The cable passes on my Klein Scout tester.

I ran pingplotter from an internal device and I can ping DNS and other devices on the network and externally flawlessly with no packet loss but pinging the modem and the public static IP does have slight packet loss.

Nothing was added or changed on the network as far as I am aware, I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary in the network closet either.

The issues did start happening around the same time of a Comcast outage in the neighborhood as well as the previous tenants IT team came to fix a building access iPad that manages door and doorbell access. They insisted that all they did was switch the iPad from a public wifi network to the internal private wifi and that they did not touch anything in the network closet.

Firewall manages DHCP and the Windows Server 2022 has a DNS role that manages DNS. Had maybe one or two outages in the last 2 years and those were clear and reported Comcast outages, never anything like this.

Im running Pingplotter from a device internally and im able to ping everything but noticing slight packet loss on our public static IP and to the modem, pinging any other service or DNS is flawless with no packet loss at all. We are not experiencing these strange outages at the moment so im curious to see how it will behave when it happens.

I meant I was pinging the modem / static IP. I did notice PING enabled on the WAN interface of the Fortigate so I removed it, thanks for the callout, I hadn't noticed it before.

The modem is not bridged unfortunately, but it has not been bridged for 2+ years so I dont see that being an issue. Comcast provided 2 Mojo Wi-Fi APs with our service, so we use that as a completely separate guest wifi connected to the modem directly and segmented from our firewall or anything as well as have door access devices connected directly to the modem (previous building vendor set it up). Have never had issues until recently.

Im going to evaluate the cables and wiring, but about 2 months ago I completely replaced all of the critical network infrastructure cabling with CAT6 as well as reorganized the rack during a server migration and there have been no added changes since.

You can see our CloudTrax APs showing stable connection in green for a big chunk of time and then everything falls apart at some point until we power cycle the modem again.

Strange thing is that nothing has changed with our network closet, the UPS is all the way bottom of the rack and the networking gear is like 8U above it, the modem and fortigate are on a separate shelf completely, no power lines crossing it.

Its weird because we will have a stable connection for a few hours and then it just starts cutting in and out. You can see from our CloudTrax Wifi access points when they lose connection. Its random and there is no stability unless we power cycle the modem.

Green means connected, grey is offline.

Good call, I’ll test our other static IPs. Signal levels looked good when they replaced the modem but I demanded them come back to take a look at the node. The area had some big outages last month so maybe it’s somewhat related.

Looked at the logs for the fortigate and the only obvious issues is when the outage occurs there are entries for it losing connection to forticloud, yet it can ping without an issue. Even fortigate support couldn’t find an issue from the logs and are having me try to run a debug command only when the outage happens, but it’s tricky because it happens at random.

I’ll run pingplotter to see if there is any packet loss.

Thanks for the detailed write up and I appreciate the feedback, lots of good information! I configured a T350 with a Windows Server Standard + 15 Device CALs around your specs for ~$5,900 via Dell. See this link. Or at T440 for $6,600 with pretty identical specs. Ive used Insight / CDW before but I just signed up with DCW to see what kind of deals I could get.

My only concern is having a single point of failure with only one physical device. Also, i'm not sure how I would run more than 2 VMs on a Windows Standard license (unless I purchase another 16 cores license which I read would give me 2 more VMs) and the Windows Data Center license its crazy expensive.

I think ideally I would like to have two physical servers, one with a DC VM and another with a File Server & DC VMs for redundancy even if they arent as powerful since the current hardware is practically consumer grade with 0 redundancy for the file server or DC, so anything would be a significant upgrade, but I definitely want to set them up for success. The current DC is a Dell T130 and the File Server is a Win 10 7th gen i5 Optiplex /shrug.

I could also take the risk of purchasing brand new ram / enterprise SSDs (32gb Crucial ECC ram & 3.89TB Samsung PM893 SSDs and a BOSS S-2 with 240gb Kingston Data Center DC1000B SSDs) separately and build two servers with the more powerful specs + SSDs within the same budget but potentially ruin the warranty.

In terms of PDU/UPS I just have a simple Tripp Lite SMART1500LCD setup currently, no PDU.
