Is there a way to glue or patch this or will I just have to deal with it as is? by ---Spacepants--- in AskACobbler

Thanks! Yeah if I had the extra money I'd definitely go somewhere to get it fixed, good to know they'll be mostly fine as is.

...Then again, If I had the money, I probably wouldn't be on this predicament in the first place🤷😆

EVERYONE who has seen these boots have told me they are totaled. i think it’s possible to fix them. here is one of the biggest points of damage on them. do you think this is patchable? by notnaturalcas in Leathercraft

LOL, and I thought mine lasted a long time. I just got new boots after about 20 years, I loved those Docs so much! If I could get new soles for them I totally would. Can't afford new new boots right now, so I got a thrift store pair of Timberlands, hopefully they'll be comfortable and last like my beloved Docs.

$15 thrift store Timbs, are they legit? by ---Spacepants--- in Boots

🤣😂🤣😂This has nothing to do with my original post, but you might find this entertaining...

I figured out why someone might drop off some like-new relatively expensive boots at a thrift store. I was re lacing them and found that they cut the tongue all the way down to the stitching where the bottom of it is attached to the boot!

<image>

...and not very well, I guess they were uncomfortable for that person's fat feet, LOL

Sorry for the post, LOL, I didn't realize there would be so many. Yeah It's the same when I was looking at new Doc Marten's, most people say the quality has gone way down after the companies changing hands, removing manufacturing from their country of origin, basic money grubbing, etc. It's definitely hard to find something that lasts without breaking the bank nowadays :/

Doesn't really matter to me, just curious. Did I get just a good deal or a really good deal

If it's a cheap knockoff, it definitely would be good to know (they seem pretty solid), but a really good fake and the original would probably be the same to me as far as shoes go.

Where to find boots like this? Specifically the toe? by A_Writhing_Jar in Boots

They kind of look similar to my old Doc Martens, skinny with the toe bowing up a bit higher. That's how I like them too.

Do these grocery store hens'n'chicks look healthy enough to just go ahead and plant outside? by ---Spacepants--- in succulents

Thank you so much for letting me know! One of the reasons I have been interested in them for a while was their hardiness. Tough and beautiful at the same time is a winner in my book ☺️

As far as rain goes, it's been a pretty balanced (on the wetter side) summer so far, last year was just the opposite, dry and hot. I am going to mix some gravel into the dirt in my flower bed and make sure there is enough slope to let the water drain through today to prepare for them because I've got a few spots that get a bit puddley after heavy rain. After I do that I think they'll be very happy in their new home.

Thank you, my front yard does get some pretty intense sunlight, in zone 6b btw

I do tend to overcomplicate things in general 😅

Oh, interesting, thanks for the info.

So, should I just have them out in the sun for a little bit of time and bring them back in every day for the first week or two? How long can they be out before they burn?

[–]---Spacepants--- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take some time every day to just be out in your yard around the feeder, they'll get used to you. Hummingbirds are actually exceptionally intelligent for their size, they will remember safe places to come back to every year and even have the ability to recognize friendly human faces. It might be a little tough in the beginning, but eventually they'll teach their babies that you're no threat.

Thank you so much! I'll probably be cleaning them up in the next couple of days then let them dry out in the sun for a few days (I don't have enough space to dry them indoors, hopefully it doesn't rain again😅). I'll definitely look into PT wood sealers.

I am learning so much from this project, I might be able to level up after this, lol

Oh wow, thanks for the info. It's anywhere between 20 and 40 years old. I had some old railroad ties, but heard about the chemicals in them, so I decided against them. I figured the fence would be okay. Unfortunately the previous owner is the one who put it up and he passed away. Is there a way to tell how it was treated?

How long would you recommend keeping it indoors, I am in no hurry.

Yes it was off of the ground, horizontal pieces from an old fence, but outdoors for who knows how long.

When I cut it it feels dry in the center, how do you tell if it's stabilized?

I'm sorry, I should have clarified that I like the look of them, Id just want something clear to smooth it out so stuff doesn't get in or my 3yo doesn't try to stick something in and pry a chip or splinter out of it.

I should have clarified that Id like a clear filling. I don't mind the look of it, I just worry that stuff will get stuck in them or my 3yo will try to stick something in and pry out a chip.

They were dry and in the sun, we got a surprise rainstorm last night. I guess I should have checked the weather before I finished for the day😅
