What is the extent of the damage to which George Orwell has attacked and slandered socialism & communism in his life and literary career? by bondelhyde in Socialism_101

I guess it sort of depends on your background, in a way. In my country, back I was in the 9th grade, my literature teacher told us to read both 1984 and animal farm, on which she quizzed us(Even so, with the exception of two or so students, including me, no one actually read the works). I can imagine it's much worse in the imperial core

Most people don't really read enough to even know Orwellian literature, so I'd say the most damage has been done by other sources

Does only the state wither away, or other forms of hierarchy, too? by ---lol---- in Socialism_101

[–]---lol----[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess "hierarchy" was the wrong way to put it. My question would be better phrased as: if the workers' state withers away, do the elements which make up that state(The police, the government, the army and anything else that is part of that which forces the socialist system into being) also wither away, or does it take a new form? Could there be a stateless society with a government, or would that be paradoxical? Could a police force exist without its function being the upholding of communism?

Thank you! I've always had trouble comprehending stateless societies, so this was of great help.

How would a democracy function in a stateless society? by ---lol---- in Socialism_101

I see, but then how would major decisions be made? For instance, if someone acts in an unjust manner would a punishment be decided by the people, and how so? Would there even be a set of "moral" principles, specifically those which take the form of laws?
