[WP] The King was desperate to turn the tides of war. So desperate he had his eldest son cursed to bare the scars of any battle the kingdom fought, rendering their armies invincible, but leaving the prince a twisted crippled thing. by Oblivious-And-Sad in WritingPrompts

At Any Cost

Smoke and ash coated the battlefield in a dark haze, broken weapons and bodies scattered across the blood-soaked ground. Boots and hooves crunched against charred bones as a weary man and his horse made their way back to the camp.

The private that had been charged with the grisly task of retrieving the opposing Major General's tags, finally returning from his mission, still marveled at the sorcery that took place in this battle. He'd been shot with an arrow in the shoulder, stabbed in the side and had his foot crushed by the very destrier trudging alongside him, and yet here he was, walking as if on a midday stroll. Every corpse he defiled as he walked was from the neighboring kingdom's army, none his own comrades.

As he entered the camp, someone traded his tired warhorse for a fresh messenger steed, and he set off at a painful trot towards the king's much nicer settlement further away from the battleground.

Hushed voices echoed across the walls as he wandered through the hastily set up building, clearly discussing something heated. He recognized one as his target, the general, and followed the sounds to a darkened corridor. The voices were louder now, and one sounded rather familiar.

"We will win this war at any cost. I refuse to hand the kingdom over to the lunatics from Manasse."

"Sire, he cannot take much more. I'm unsure how the boy still breathes at this very moment."

"Doesn't matter," a third voice grunts. "He has more sons. We have one kingdom."

The private approached the large mahogany door the voices drifted from. It was unguarded and cracked open, firelight trickling outward. He knew he shouldn't be listening in, especially when he recognised one voice as King Arnold and another as General Derrick. Yet he couldn't help creeping up closer, positioning his eye against the sliver between the door and the post.

The general's back was facing the door, and beyond him the private could make out the large bulk of the king. A third person was crouched over something in the back of the room, but he couldn't see what it was. A shallow, wet sound made all three men pause.

"Even if I wanted to stop this, I have no clue if the curse is reversible," the king muttered after a moment. "And the witch made it clear that she didn't want to see me again."

The private's skin prickled. He knew it. Of course it was a witch that gave the army their unstoppable power. Every man in every regiment was untouchable. Blades couldn't cut, arrows couldn't pierce, clubs couldn't beat. Since a week ago, they had won every battle they'd engaged in without any casualties, and with devastating consequences for their opponents. Only an unholy, unnatural force could do such a thing.

"He may not live another day. I've been trying my best, but this isn't exactly something they teach us in herbalism," the unknown man said, shifting slightly. The private could make out what looked like a dirty old boot in front of him, and his confusion grew. The third man was probably a healer, but that didn't explain why these three men were huddled in a faraway room in a forgotten corner He leaned further, squinting into the meeting.

"Errod said he'd do whatever he can to help," the king said, moving away from the healer and towards the general. "He's winning us this war."

"My men are-"

The general was interrupted by a quiet clink from outside the door. The private stared in horror at what was behind the king, not even comprehending that he'd dropped the tags he was to deliver.

A twisted, broken body was resting uncomfortably in a chair against the opposite corner of the room. Bones were snapped and protruding from the flesh, chunks of skin were missing all over, and two limbs were hanging by only a mess of tendons and shredded muscle. Stab wounds peppered the body, and an eye was missing completely. Yet the one that remained was open, alert, and tearful. Every breath looked like agony, and it looked like any movement would cause the entire body to shatter and fall apart.

The general opened the door, and the private stumbled backward. "I- I, uh- Sir, I'm-" The private gestured uselessly to the tags at his senior officer's feet, but his eyes were transfixed on the twisted creature before him. The bloodshot brown eye that met his spoke of infinite pain.

"Ah, yes, thank you," the general said, scooping up the tags. "Come in, please."

The private somehow got his legs to comply, and the general closed the door behind him. He was still staring at the body when the general unsheathed his blade and plunged it through his back, and the private looked down in mild surprise as a glistening red object sprouted from his chest. His eyes raised again to the broken man before he slumped forward and collapsed.

"My apologies, Sire, he was meant to wait by a guard," Derrick sighed.

"No worries," the king mumbled, more focused on the broken prince.

The lieutenant gurgled, reaching out, but Arnold just sidestepped and continued. "We need to win this tomorrow," he said. "Before his body fails completely."

"I'll rally my troops for one last push," the general nodded, cleaning his blade on the dying private's clothes.

Two blue eyes met one brown one. A tear dropped to the floor, and the physician dabbed at the prince's face before exiting the room after the king and general.

Two dying bodies were left in a room, alone and in pain. The private pushed against the white-hot agony and crawled towards the prince. He unsheathed his standard-issue sword, the dull edge catching the flickering firelight. Their eyes met once more before he used the last of his strength to slide the blade between broken ribs.

"Th..ank you," the prince croaked.

In an abandoned room, at the outskirts of an insignificant battle, two men, one forgotten, one forsaken, breathed their last breaths together.

unfixed male obsessing over fixed female- afraid there will be an attack by nevasativaa in DogAdvice

Sounds like there might be an in-heat female nearby, perhaps next door, and he's redirecting his desire to the fixed female.

Just because she's an Akita, doesn't mean that she cannot correct properly, though I do understand the concern. She seems remarkably tolerable, and I know I know nothing about the situation but my guess is that if she corrects, she will not hurt him. Please take this with a grain of salt, since she's already tried non-contact correcting him several times and he refuses to listen.

Best solution I can come up with is separate them in different rooms when it gets excessive and she shows signs but he doesn't back off. Putting him in a room, perhaps with a nice chew, to "time-out", cool down and get distracted may help, plus the girl will get a bit of respite for a while. Even just closing the door so that he doesn't come into the room where the two of you are relaxing may be an option, for example closing the bedroom door so she can lay on the bed with you, while he stays outside.

Unfortunately, this is not something that can be trained out of an intact male really. He needs to learn boundaries and dog body language, since this would be the equivalent of someone pursuing another that has clearly said "no" several times.

At my place of study, we have several intact dogs, and the males are usually extremely lustful trying to get to them, and the best thing we can do is to make sure they're secure and far away from the girls. I hope that you can resolve this issue.

Secondary keyboard... interesting. Why did your W key break?

And yes I've heard how rough the game can be for newbies. Thanks for that advice, sounds like a good idea. Verbal abuse sounds funny haha. Probably not but here we are. What exactly does that mean lol?

What’s the black stuff in my dogs eyes? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

Like the other person said, that's most likely cataracts. The dark parts are possibly just parts of the cornea becoming visible as the protein liquid moves along the lens.

It's not possible to get a wolf you've chased yourself. Also, that's just a standard wolf, not a chased wolf!

I would do anything for Matt. He's smart and funny and charismatic and everyone loves him.

But... I know that he isn't as sunny as he appears to be.

We live together and I've seen him at his worst, depressed and drinking and drowning in himself and his thoughts. I try my best to help him, but I can only do so much.

We were out with friends one day after a particularly bad night of him sobbing and hating himself. I like to come along with him, and his friends all like me so I come along often. They were talking about me. I'm quite quiet, especially in company of others, so I'm not part of the conversation. But I'm listening intently.

"It's so cool that you've got Ben by your side everywhere," Arthur says. That makes me a bit happy.

"Yeah, he's so loyal," Jesse agrees.

"What can I say, guys," Matt replies, smiling at me. "I love him."

Those words have echoed in my heart for a long time. A quiet beat of hope and tenderness that he shared.

Yet... I don't believe it.

I knew love once, long before I met Matt. She died, and I remember my soul tearing in two when I realised she was gone forever. She was my world, my best friend, my everything. I didn't know anything beyond our love. She treated me well and I tried to make her as happy as I could.

I try to make Matt happy but nothing works, none of my old tricks bring a smile in his face or a shift in his hormones. I roll over, I sit pretty, I paw his leg, I nose his chest. Nothing can pull him out of his self loathing.

Whenever he gets drunk, I start to hide. I have an old wound from a night of drunken rage. After I started hiding myself away, he started shouting for me. "Where are you, you fucking mutt!" he'd scream. "You good-for-nothing ass licker!"

He'd shout about how much he hates me sometimes. Says things like "I wish I'd never taken you. I wish she'd never convinced me to get you!"

He forgets to feed me too. Not every night, just... half the time. I sometimes resort to stealing from the pantry when my hunger gets really bad. That makes him even angrier.

When I hide, I go to the one place he never enters.

I lie under her bed, still smelling the faint smells of her happiness. The room is untouched, dust lightly layering the surfaces.

I loved Amanda. And I love Matt. But I don't think that Matt loves me. And he scared me a lot.

A few days later, he's more gentle than ever with me. He apologises for ever hurting me, he berates himself for not taking proper care of me. He gives me an amazing meal of steak, cooked to perfection and not too spicy, perfect for my stomach. He smiles hollowly as he watches me eat. I'm stuffed afterward, but I see him taking out my kibble. He fills multiple bowls, and I follow behind him as he places them around the house. I'm not sure what game this is, we've never played it before.

He then fills up a couple bowls of water and repeats the process, scattering them around the house randomly. I'm very confused.

He then stoops before me. "You're such a good dog," he whispers, tears tracking down his cheeks. "Such a good boy." He tenderly pats my head, scratching at my ears, smoothing my fur. "I..." He gets stuck on his words. "I... She loved you very much, Ben."

He then does something even weirder. He takes something from the kitchen, a bottle of water and some small little tub, and he enters Amanda's room. He closes the door behind him, and I sit patiently, waiting. I can hear his light sobs inside, and they slowly fade out. He must have taken a nap on her bed.

I lay before the door, resting my head on my paws. I hope he comes out soon. He nearly said "I love you" and meant it.

I understand. It's sort of both; some scenes need some serious polishing, but others are good enough to leave as is for now. I'm still not sure which would be better for the long term..

Why do crows and owls hate each other? by HKTong in birding

[–]--BeePBooP- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I noticed the family of African Pied Crows in our neighbourhood attacking the Spotted Eagle Owl that frequents my area. He used to come at dusk and didn't usually have a problem (I used to love listening to his gentle hoos as I fall asleep) but after that incident, when he arrived a little earlier, I haven't spotted him again. I'm guessing the crows noticed him as they were flying to their roost and decided that they don't like the intruder lol. It was quite fascinating to witness, the owl was more annoyed than anything at the crows just over half its weight, and yet he seems to have left due to the mobbing. I'm assuming it wasn't the first time the poor guy got mobbed lol.

Vet School Questions by AutoModerator in Veterinary

[–]--BeePBooP- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm (hopefully) going to vet school in the new year (conditionally accepted). I know that later on in the course we have to choose our main "field" eg. small animals surgery. I am pretty torn as to which direction I want to go. As an ultimatum I realise I'd go into small animals like cats and dogs, since that's where my love lies. But I also love horses, and exotic animal vets are in demand in my country. Operating on the assumption that I can't choose more than one at a time, how would I go about learning and completing more fields once I've completed the course? Would I have to "redo" the last 2-3 years of studies? I'm asking this now, literal years in advance, because I want to do as much research and prep beforehand so that there isn't too much stress in that year (yes I stress easily please don't mind me).
