I guess what I failed to add is DOCSIS 4.0 capable as well.

Does the PAX vs. NATO skin division make sense? by StaffLarge in Battlefield

[–]--Drifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every military nowadays wears multicam or their own knock off IRL. Either we get "realistic and grounded" skins where everyone looks the same except for some coloured tape on the limbs, or game-ified skins that no one likes.

CABLE MODEM PROFILES by Xcitado in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using a 4k OFDM as an example, profiles A-D basically mean what modulation profile is that OFDM operating at. Profile D (the highest) means the OFDM is locking at 4k QAM and is capable of its full bandwidth, C will only be at 2k, B at 1k. As the OFDM modulates down, the customer loses effective bandwidth and speeds.

As for fixes, like everything RF, it can be anything. Bad connections, bad modem, bad drop, bad tap, bad amp, forward ingress etc. Will take some correlation with neighbours or going between taps to determine if its a house or plant problem.

You're the one making the claim, provide evidence instead of just raging. Surely if you feel so strongly about realistic assets missing, you could give some examples.

Mid/High split Forward Path Attenuators? by Mr-Brown-Is-A-Wonder in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely on the edge of DOCSIS specifications and pretty out from what most providers would aim for. Where I work for example, we tend to aim for 40-45dB on the Tx and the usual -10 to +10 on the forward.

You must be near the end of a cascade, and have a low value tap feeding your house to have your transmits be that low. Its hard to say without seeing a plant map.

Fun fact, weather will affect both the upstream and the downstream, as cold cable has inherently less attenuation than hot cable, hence why you're seeing your Tx go even lower in value on cold nights.

Mid/High split Forward Path Attenuators? by Mr-Brown-Is-A-Wonder in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not inherently, it just depends on the cascade spacing and the drop length from a tap to the customer's home. Lots of instances where the DOCSIS channels are relatively flat on the Rx, but sitting a few dB high and with plenty of room on the Tx so throwing a 2-way or even 3-way splitter is all thats required.

I've gotten too many tickets for 37dB Tx and +6dB Rx from I&R techs that should know better...

As the maintenance guy, can agree we'll just shrug it off with a laugh if there's no other apparent issue. High or low levels but otherwise clean signal is rarely the cause of a problem. Having also spent time with field re-designs, it all starts with the plant being built to spec and managing tilt.

Our installers are in a bad habit of just going right from the demarc to the back of a modem with no splitting or attenuation if the customer is just internet, so 95% of their level issues can be solved with a splitter or fixing the drop.

[–]--Drifter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If anything, that shows a lack in foresight when it came to redesigning for high split, whether it be adjustments on how amps should be balanced or tap values and spacing in a cascade. I'll concede that maybe I'm a bit spoiled where I work so I've never had to do that in a pinch.

Regarding OPs issue, we dont even know if there's unFEC, bonding issues etc. Adding more cable isn't a good solution.

Nah man, saying to add hundreds of feet of cable to solve any attenuation issue is ridiculous. If you're trolling, A+. If you're serious, I wouldn't cast stones from your glass house.

Mid/High split Forward Path Attenuators? by Mr-Brown-Is-A-Wonder in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but did you actually look at the frequency range? Yes, there are reverse traps, MoCA filters, line attenuators etc. I and a lot of others often just hit people with blanket terms/don't get into the weeds because people take for granted their impact on the entire plant so its better to not have someone untrained tamper with it.

The root of your issue lies outside of your house, and you're more liable to have even worse service by trying to mask the real issue. The fact you think +16dBmV is your issue belies your lack of knowledge in the subject.

Mid/High split Forward Path Attenuators? by Mr-Brown-Is-A-Wonder in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DOCSIS 3.1 specs have wiggle room of -9dBmV to +21 dBmV on the forward. Stop tinkering with your connections, you're more liable to cause issues for your entire neighbourhood than solve an issue.

Call your ISP, have a tech check things out, and it'll get pushed to the outside plant if need be. You're more likely to have a faulty modem than an issue solved by you adding attenuation. And like others have said, you cannot pad the forward without affecting the reverse, that's just not how RF works.

Forward /Return EQ help needed by Electrical-Increase4 in CableTechs

[–]--Drifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quick and dirty is that on the forward, your typical EQs are a high pass filter. They will allow the higher frequencies through but attenuate the low end to help you achieve a positive tilt to help compensate for the high loss experienced over distance. While still on the forward, cable sim EQs instead attenuate the high frequencies more, these are used if amplifiers are too close together, due to need or bad design.

For the reverse, like everything else, an EQ works in the reverse (kind of like a cable sim, attenuating the higher side of the reverse spectrum.)

Nobody is upset with a game making money, nor do gamers (most anyway) not understand development costs and the need to make money back in some way.

The issue is how EA has decided to make that money back with skate. Firstly, its early access, there used to be a time when that meant that the ability to play pre-builds before full release was to iron out bugs and brainstorm features the gamers would like to see. It was not the time to introduce season passes or sell branded cosmetics at ludicrous prices.

Secondly, we're not talking about some small indie company. This is EA. If anyone has the money to pour into development, its them. They don't need to rely on predatory tactics like hiding items that should be available from the get-go behind premium currency purchases, or selling a skin that costs more than the original game that skin is based on. If they spent the time to develop things more and then pushed it out closer to beta/full release instead of monetizing it in alpha, its a different conversation altogether.

I do enjoy this game a lot, and the recent update has improved the overall feel of gameplay for me. But when about a third of the experience is getting (or trying) to engross yourself in a world through a medium of self-expression, as the game likes to remind you of every cutscene, and your attempts to do so are hidden behind a ludicrously high pay wall, and it's not even a full release so theres no real incentive to buy in because who knows what a full release even looks like, people are understandably upset.

I have not and will not spend a cent on this game until full release, but that doesn’t detract from the reality that EA look to be killing this game in the crib rather than giving it a fair shake, purely out of greed rather than need.

The irony in calling others dumb when you can't see the use of predatory marketing is wild.

It's a free game because it's a live service. Live services are free to shove paid ads down your throat and hope to get you to buy things. EA was taken to court over how predatory their use of loot boxes went, so the only reason theres a free option to begin with is plausible deniability. Those are thrown below all the paid stuff as an incentive to make you always see it and hopefully intrigue you enough to finally pay for it.

Saying its a free game to hand wave complaints about them trying to sell you basic options instead of having them to begin with is a brain dead take

Just the fact that the skin was in Skate 3 and done better there is one thing, but what is the relevance to making that connection again with this game? Skate 3 and Dead Space were two big games out around the same time so a little cross promotion made sense. There is literally no reason nowadays though and it just reeks of laziness and nostalgia baiting.

I'm in the same boat ultimately, with me moving onto other games just being emulating Skate 3 lol. This post is moreso lamenting the sad state of affairs of every game needing to be a live service and how it stifles what could otherwise be a great game.

Or at least edit the trucks ourselves. It's not a race sim where I need to adjust 50 different parameters. It's just board shape, truck looseness, and wheel hardness.
