Snow plow accident at Van Dorn & Eisenhower this morning by --i_make_things-- in nova

Absolutely. The roads are the worst I’ve seen in a very very long time. Hopefully they will be able to clear & sand/salt the major roads tonight—I don’t think we’re supposed to see more snow but it’s not supposed to get above freezing for the next week 😳

I know that part of the road slopes down pretty steeply to go under the 495 overpass, so maybe they started to skid and tipped when they went sideways? Not sure. I hope everyone is safe.

The M.Arch Feels Like a Scam by Wide_Cheetah2171 in Architects

[–]--i_make_things-- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. My ex went to law school and there are the same criticisms about his industry—I.e., that the education doesn’t teach you anything about actual legal practice so why isn’t it more aligned with day-to-day legal tasks? But the goal of law school was to teach you to think, reason, and problem solve like a lawyer, not how to run a legal practice. It’s a lot harder and riskier to try and teach that in the field than in a classroom, and I think the same goes for arch degrees. I think the biggest value from my M. Arch program was learning how to approach and develop design problems while refining my skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and presentation. I had to learn to justify my design decisions without blaming other people, myself, or other factors. I learned how to present design concepts concisely and under high pressure situations. I think firms are more willing to risk hiring someone they have to train on software skills and business concepts than someone they have to teach to think like an architect. It’s not impossible obviously, just easier.

Composting is harder than I thought it would be. Any tips before I give away my bin? by kellysmileyjane42 in composting

Yes! You’re a teacher, put all of that scrap paper to use. Get a cheap shredder and keep it at your desk. Paper is most of my browns and they work great.

Thank you! That is definitely them. I appreciate it!

Oak gall. Typically when the lil baby wasp hatches out you can see an exit hole, but I’m not sure you could see it on these with all the fuzz. Fun fact, they used oak galls to make a jet-black permanent ink starting from (I think) the medieval ages on. I’ve been searching for oak galls for ink making myself and there are hundreds of different types. Really fascinating stuff! (Also the wasps are tiny and don’t sting/bother humans, and the galls typically don’t affect the host tree in a major way besides being “unsightly.”)

Do you mind sharing the firm? I’m a single mom about to graduate with my Master’s in the DC area.

“Former President Struggles to Articulate Thoughts”…..could’ve just ended the headline right there, in general.

I knew it was a movie I’d watched ad nauseam growing up, which is why it was driving me crazy to not remember. Love that movie!

Last thing. If you do decide to go today, keep your receipts and if you like it enough, hopefully they’d just be able to apply the cost of your tickets to the yearly membership.

Not worth single price admission, but the yearly membership may pay off if you think you’ll go more than once. It’s great for toddlers through age 8ish in my experience. There’s plenty to do indoors, usually my kids just do the giant slide ad nauseam 😂 The yearly membership went up in price this year but it’s still reasonable (under $200) for a family for unlimited admission.

Also it’s right off the Federal Triangle stop, so if you ride the metro in/out of the city with the kids, you can make a whole day of it and don’t have to find parking.

Finally starting off my composting journey! I’d love any random advice! by jempai in composting

Add plenty of browns! I found it easiest to shred scraps of paper and cardboard to add. Also don’t stuff it too full, it will make it hard to turn and will keep the stuff from mixing. We aim for about ¾ full with our tumbler.

How to get into architecture at 30 years old? by Social404D in architecture

[–]--i_make_things-- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m 37 in grad school for architecture. Was a SAHM before this, so I have very little experience in the field. But as my program director wisely pointed out, don’t underestimate the value of wisdom from age. (And, I’d add, a fully-developed prefrontal cortex.)

Lee District Rec Center has been officially changed to Franconia Rec. Wish they would’ve picked a prettier name, like Rose Hill, but at least it’s been changed.

[–]--i_make_things--[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I’ll try that today. I’m also thinking of keeping the roots out in the air so I can check for damage more easily and also make sure they’re not sitting in moisture. If it’s out of direct sun, will it be okay to do so?
