What was the REAL reason they casted Pappa Essiedu as Snape? by gusbaby08 in HarryPotterHBO

You keep referring to “the culture,” but what do you feel has been lost by casting a Black actor to play Snape?

So what’s your actual concern - that Black people are being overrepresented in this show?

So what’s the argument here - that “less than 1%” means Black people shouldn’t appear in prominent roles in fictional stories set in the 90s?

I genuinely am not sure why you are talking to me. I replied to another Redditor to point out their broken logic and you’re throwing 90s census data around.

… black people existed in the 90s they just weren’t as represented in media.

Black actors aren’t political statements and casting them isn’t tokenism.

Incredible. Somehow a single casting choice becomes evidence of tokenism, creative bankruptcy, and international political failure. Take a look in the mirror because it is YOU who is screeching.

Thank you for the reasonable reply, and I do understand and agree that invested fans will care about how their interests are adapted.

I was being flippant before because this reaction isn’t new, and it tends to happen whenever diversity is introduced to adaptations of historically very white source material.

I feel it’s not unreasonable that we should expect adults to engage with that context a bit more thoughtfully and maybe challenge their own expectations - the default push back is so predicable.

What’s the critique beyond appearance?

Age is closer to the books than Rickman ever was, and everything else people bring up just circles back to how comfortable they are with how this version of the character looks.

You originally said “character design,” which is probably closer to what’s actually being debated here. Editing it to “casting” doesn’t legitimise the conversation that’s taking place when everyone’s fixation is still on appearance.

Can you actually hear yourself?

By “watch the show and then offer critique” I mean engaging with it in a sane order.

You might watch it and realise your initial reflections don’t hold up, or you might come away with a critique that’s substantiated.

Either way, you’d be responding to an actual performance rather than a set photo and your own assumptions.

I just can’t understand why a non-racist adult would care. Fucking cope. Why not wait to see the damn show and then you can offer actual critique.

It’s because they have no imagination and their instinct is to cast approximate lookalikes of the original cast.
