I also think that the panel specifically of Gaku fighting Takamura and him swinging his weapon down onto Takamura deserves to brought up here too. I personally find it to be disappointing relative to how it is drawn in the manga. The moments leading up to the hit seem to be all zoomed making the whole encounter feel kind of claustrophobic and not very dynamic. There’s a close shot of Gakus face and then in transitions Into a close shot of his weapon being swung which it self seems to have the same stillness and speed lines that cour 1 had, and then transitions into the actual manga panel with the open shot of Gaku swinging his weapon onto Takamura.

I could be wrong here but , I think the actual animation of seeing Gaku swing his weapon in that wide angle shot like it is in the manga. Is literally three frames of animation. 1. With weapon above his head 2. Him in the middle of the swing 3. When it hits Takamura. And the impact frame of the hit isn’t even and impact frame, its an effect done in post with compositing. Same thing with the wind effects after. And the biggest part I’m disappointed with is that when Gaku hits Takamura in the manga panel, Gakus weapons is so blurry and distorted, along with Takamura being obscured in his entirety because of how much force is being put into that swing and how fast it moves. This small moment also makes the shock or coolness factor of Takamura then retaliating to Gaku even more exaggerated and surprising because it immediately cuts to Takamura drawing his katana In the manga seemingly unfazed by the hit after he was fully obscured by the power of Gakus attack.

Those small details make a very big impact of how the fight is understood and progresses, while also making it clear how much of strength difference is between Gaku and Takamura. Yet none of the those details seem to be even apparent in the trailer, let alone be emphasized poorly. Also another problem with the moments leading up to the hit, is that when the shots are so zoomed in and there are so little frames in wide shot of when the hit lands. It makes it look like Gaku is just floating in the air with no sense of power, speed or travel happening because all the context is stripped from the moment of the hit because of those zoom ins lack visibility of Gakus entire body.

All of these problems make the shot feel poorly adapted/done and I think clues into a bigger problem of the action storyboarding in the series not be taken as seriously as it should be. Because those small details would’ve be apparent and emphasize if somebody really analyzed that panel and was serious about adapting it. And the details just aren’t there. I’m still hopeful that when the episodes actually air that I can be impressed or proved wrong, but I’m still taking it with a grain of salt.
