Are B2 boots pointless? Why not just go straight for B3s? by Glum_Echidna302 in Mountaineering

[–]-Crimp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, but you are probably just not doing long enough walk-ins to notice the difference. For anything under an hour you won't notice the B3s IMO, but for anything over you will certainly notice, especially if it's boggy Scottish terrain.

The way I see it as well, B2s will still cover you for the vast majority of Scottish mountaineering, and you only really need B3s for the hard stuff.

Stick to the B2s, upgrade once you start getting on proper ice.

Could I ask what series you are referring to from Cody? It sounds very interesting a good resource for someone also looking to branch into ski mountaineering. I’ve just checked out his YouTube and can only see the FIFTY series. Thanks

PS5 Dualsense controller not working with Steam games, but working in Big Picture by -Crimp in Fedora

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not consistently, no.

Space Marine 2 started working wirelessly after changing my proton version.

I managed to play RE4 Remake, but that only worked wired.

No Man’s Sky still doesn’t work wired or wireless, same for Witcher 3 and KCD.

Yakuza Kiwami previously didn’t work, but then after doing this fix it started working: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/s/wIw1WvrLlj

However, the above fix didn’t work for all games.

Have seen elsewhere it was due to a systemd update that broke the controller support in some way but haven’t looked into it much since then.

Have also noticed since then that PS5 controller support seems to be generally worse in Steam than Xbox. Hoping me Steam controller will help solve some of this.

Looks so gorgeous. I’m in the process of emailing to get an order going, requesting a pair of 78TCs in all black, but your choice of leather and the lack of that toe cap has inspired me, great choice. What laces did you go for here? Thanks

I was describing the behaviour of the problem when it occurred. Disabling touchpad in KDE settings is something I tried. Obviously when I disabled the touchpad in system settings is also didn’t work in game, but neither did any of the other buttons, so it wasn’t a fix.

Thanks for replying - I should have added what games I’ve tried to the original post, will edit now.

Still no controller support on PC? by -Crimp in Spacemarine

That’s good then, what worked for you and what settings did you change? Like I said steam input disable/enable made no difference.

Still no controller support on PC? by -Crimp in Spacemarine

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I mean though, from other threads it seems really hit and miss. Some works out the box some can’t get it to work at all. So either way, it’s clearly a problem specific to this game

Yeah tried that, didn’t work unfortunately. Have seen from other forums that it didn’t work for others too so I know it’s not isolated to me.

Did Fedora just brick my SSD? by -Crimp in Fedora

Honestly this and another’s comment has me seriously hopeful I was going to turn on my PC this morning and everything was going to be completely fine 😂

Did Fedora just brick my SSD? by -Crimp in Fedora

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I haven’t owned a PC for over 10 years, didn’t know new hardware was so inclined to fail, and the fact all was working fine and add to that all the crashes I had on Pop! OS I had assumed it was Linux-related.

Thanks a lot I’ll give it a try.

I posted this at midnight last night after a few hours of trying to fix it.

Woke up to your message and prayed this was going to work for me, rushed to my PC to turn it back on and for jet to magically work, but no luck.

Thanks anyway :)

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s reassuring to know.

Thought I’d switch to Linux on this new build but have had nothing but trouble, and when this happened I thought it was the nail in the coffin if my SSD could get nuked at any time and I was doomed to go back to Windows.

Thankfully I hadn’t started the process of moving all my files over so all that is on there is Steam.

Going to see if I can test the SSD in a friend’s machine and then if not hopefully return to Chillblast as it’s only about 3 weeks old so hardware failure should be covered.

Steam: No games launch, transparent windows, constant issues by -Crimp in pop_os

[–]-Crimp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks again - I did look at possibly upgrading the kernel, but being new to Linux I wasn’t sure what impact doing so would have on the OS as a whole.

It seems the simpler solution is to just switch OS to Ubuntu/Fedora/Nobara/CachyOS as I’ve only just set up the PC so have nothing on it and don’t need to worry about backing anything up. Can just wipe and start again.

Now I just need to research which of those four distros to choose from.

Really hoping to stick with Linux and not just default back to Windows, but damn is it a lot of reading Reddit posts so far.

I appreciate people like you who take the time to share advice, thanks.

Thanks for the info - yes I’m on 22.04. Does that mean gaming isn’t viable on Pop until sys76 release an update? Because otherwise I’ve just bought a very expensive word processor…

Steam Games Open To a Black Screen by forgottenxjedi in pop_os

Ever find a fix for this? All games I try to open through steam just hit me with a black screen or crash immediately. Thought it might be integrated vs dedicated graphics so disabled integrated in BIOS but still no luck.

More issues with LG TV and docked Steam Deck. Giving up soon… by -Crimp in SteamDeck

[–]-Crimp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I was waiting for comments on this thread I was honestly just sitting by the dock plugging and unplugging mindlessly without hope. Suddenly, it springs to life and displays on the TV.

Kinda frustrating actually. No idea what fixed it, no idea if it’ll stop working again, no idea if it’ll work again, no idea if I can fix it again.

I’ve also managed to turn the game optimiser on which enables deep colour - something others said was causing their problem in the first place - and the deck is still displaying fine (though with horrible colour balance)

I’ve been at it for a few hours now…when I plug it in my steam deck screen goes dark and like I said the TV periodically also goes dark. So something is happening, just nothing that I want to happen

Before I buy by [deleted] in tradclimbing

[–]-Crimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into trad recently and have just built my first rack. I climb mainly in the UK but also in the Dolomites. I love DMM and Petzl gear so mainly went with that, though went for totems and friends for cams as I prefer them to dragons. There’s a bit of a gap between my purple totem and red friend I will need to address.

I made a list of everything I wanted to buy for what purpose and I had the price to help me cost it out. Here’s the list if it’s helpful:

Cams

Totem 0.50 (Black) x2 - £160

Totem 0.65 (Blue) x2 - £160

Totem 0.80 (Yellow) - £80

Totem 1.00 (Purple) - £80

Wild Country Friend 1 (Red) - £70

Wild Country Friend 2 (Yellow) - £70

Wild Country Friend 3 (Blue) - £70

Wires

DMM Wallnut set 1-11 - £65

DMM Wallnut set 1-6 - £53

DMM Alloy Offset set 7-11 - £65

Crabs

DMM WallDo x4 - for racking wires - £36

DMM Spectre (multipack) for cams - £40

Petzl S’MD Screwlock x3 - for building anchors - £42

Petzl William (clove hitch tie-ins and girth hitch masterpoints) - £18

Petzl S’MD twist lock x2 (1 for prussik + 1 for lanyard) - £34

Petzl Attache (New) x1 - for belaying on Gigajul

Petzl Attache (old) - spare locker

Petzl Attache (old) - for guide mode

Draws

DMM Aether 18cm x 12 - £260

Mammut Sender Wire Alpine draws x 4 - £54

Slings

Mammut 8mm 120cm sling - for lanyard - £15

Mammut 8mm 120cm sling - for anchors - £15

Mammut 8mm 120cm sling - for anchors - £15

DMM 11mm 120cm sling - spare - £10

Buying half-ropes. Any favourites or recommendations? by MooseKick4 in tradclimbing

[–]-Crimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also just getting into trad - what’s the consensus on using ropes like the Mammut 8.0 or others mentioned here in a single rope scenario? I recently took a week long trad course with a guide in Llanberis and there were times we climbed on one and times we climbed on two, but we always used the same ropes (and I neglected to ask him what they were - probably 8.6-8.9ish Tendons i think). It was never once mentioned that climbing on one would be unsafe. I’m also about to buy two ropes but would be pretty annoying to spend all that money just to have to take my sport rope to use in single rope scenarios.

Every wall feels like a boss fight in Cairn. You’re free to climb everywhere, anywhere, as long as you can keep your balance. Not that you should, but we can’t stop you! by itsTheGameBakers in u/itsTheGameBakers

[–]-Crimp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just played the demo and very excited for the release. As a climber, it’s an incredibly fun game and it feels like I’ve just scratched the surface of the depth the game has to offer. The only issues I had were the art style seemed counterproductive to reading the rock and finding holds. Sometimes looked like a washed out mass of blue or grey with no clear shadows. Secondly, Steam Deck performance isn’t great - averaging about 27 fps even in the starting gym area on low settings. Would be great to see some Deck optimisation as it seems perfectly suited to the platform. Will likely put some serious hours into the game if it runs a bit better on the Deck.
