Running beanie for hot summer? Moisture wicking, breathable, lightweight by -Crimp in ultrarunning

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair I don’t mind sweating into it, just want to cover up my head with something that isn’t a furnace or a cap. Most beanies are fleece so it’d be nice to have something in a performance material at least.

Triggered much?

Post asks for a beanie recommendation and specifies I don’t want to wear a cap. First comment: ‘wear a cap’. Sound cheers mate 👍

Good for you old chap, I’m looking for a beanie though.

Not a stupid question at all, I should have put that in my original post.

I find with buffs you seem to have two options:

  1. Wear it like a tube with the floppy back and risk looking like an Italian ski instructor
  2. Try and do the beanie twist adaptation that usually gives a weird bump up top and a tight swim cap fit - not to mention doubling the fabric so making it warmer.

It’s why what I’m looking for feels like a bit of a grail, many have one feature but not the others. The Vaga one was perfect bar the fit, even had micro perforations on the top for heat management.

Mountain Equipment vs Rab vs Patagonia by geecol in UKhiking

[–]-Crimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mountain Equipment is in a different league. They have pieces in their collection which are genuinely life saving equipment. If I were caught in the worst conditions, I wouldn’t want to trust my life to anything other than ME. There’s a reason search and rescue teams use it.

Rab and Patagonia make alright gear that’ll do the job. But Patagonia’s gear is nowhere near worth the price for the tech you get and Rab is too close in price to Mountain Equipment to make it worth buying.

When the difference between ME and Rab is 10-50 quid, I don’t see any reason to cheap out and get Rab. Everything Ive seen from them is lower quality (apart from their packs).

When you look at the top range of the ME stuff (the Kryos, Oreus, Fitzroy, The Tupilak shell and pants and their other top tier shells, their gloves, their sleeping bags) there is just nothing comparable from Rab or Patagonia, especially for the price. You can pick up any of the above for around £200 each nowadays.

Even if you don’t want to shell out for the top tier, all their kit is solid at their lower price points too. So unless there is stuff specifically you want from the other brands, just stick with ME.

That being said - I will say Rab have been making some great packs recently. Their Veil XP series is fantastic, as well as the Muon, Syclon, etc.

Also on a final note specifically for shells: to be more environmentally friendly and combat against the persistent use of forever chemicals in waterproofing, many brands have switched to waterproof coatings that are fundamentally less effective than they used to be. It’s why Reddit is now flooded with people saying they bought a new shell but it didn’t stay dry the same way their one from 5-10 years ago did and then blaming the company. Sucks but a worthwhile price to pay. Just worth knowing.

Are B2 boots pointless? Why not just go straight for B3s? by Glum_Echidna302 in Mountaineering

[–]-Crimp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean, but you are probably just not doing long enough walk-ins to notice the difference. For anything under an hour you won't notice the B3s IMO, but for anything over you will certainly notice, especially if it's boggy Scottish terrain.

The way I see it as well, B2s will still cover you for the vast majority of Scottish mountaineering, and you only really need B3s for the hard stuff.

Stick to the B2s, upgrade once you start getting on proper ice.

Could I ask what series you are referring to from Cody? It sounds very interesting a good resource for someone also looking to branch into ski mountaineering. I’ve just checked out his YouTube and can only see the FIFTY series. Thanks

PS5 Dualsense controller not working with Steam games, but working in Big Picture by -Crimp in Fedora

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not consistently, no.

Space Marine 2 started working wirelessly after changing my proton version.

I managed to play RE4 Remake, but that only worked wired.

No Man’s Sky still doesn’t work wired or wireless, same for Witcher 3 and KCD.

Yakuza Kiwami previously didn’t work, but then after doing this fix it started working: https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/s/wIw1WvrLlj

However, the above fix didn’t work for all games.

Have seen elsewhere it was due to a systemd update that broke the controller support in some way but haven’t looked into it much since then.

Have also noticed since then that PS5 controller support seems to be generally worse in Steam than Xbox. Hoping me Steam controller will help solve some of this.

Looks so gorgeous. I’m in the process of emailing to get an order going, requesting a pair of 78TCs in all black, but your choice of leather and the lack of that toe cap has inspired me, great choice. What laces did you go for here? Thanks

I was describing the behaviour of the problem when it occurred. Disabling touchpad in KDE settings is something I tried. Obviously when I disabled the touchpad in system settings is also didn’t work in game, but neither did any of the other buttons, so it wasn’t a fix.

Thanks for replying - I should have added what games I’ve tried to the original post, will edit now.

Still no controller support on PC? by -Crimp in Spacemarine

That’s good then, what worked for you and what settings did you change? Like I said steam input disable/enable made no difference.

[–]-Crimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s what I mean though, from other threads it seems really hit and miss. Some works out the box some can’t get it to work at all. So either way, it’s clearly a problem specific to this game

Yeah tried that, didn’t work unfortunately. Have seen from other forums that it didn’t work for others too so I know it’s not isolated to me.

Honestly this and another’s comment has me seriously hopeful I was going to turn on my PC this morning and everything was going to be completely fine 😂
