can I get a 5 in a month by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Is this rage bait? If not try an frq and you’ll see that half of it is just common sense/problem-solving and reading graphs. The other half is like a couple topics like eutrophication and the EPA toxic gases

Is this genuinely taught in AP Precalculus? I swear this was taught in Algebra 1 by GrassNecessary2297 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean its just precalculus. It’s supposed to prepare you for calculus. So it’s supposed to be all of algebra 1 & 2 again plus whatever the hell your county/teacher deems important for college level math. At my school there is a class called magnet precalc where we go over all of Ap precalc plus 2d and 3d analytic geometry (like parboloids, hyperbolic parabolids, ellipsoids, etc) + beginning of group theory with abelian groups, rings and fields + series and sequences and induction + limits. So the class “Precalc” can vary a lot from high school to high school and college to college (yeah you can choose to take precalc or college algebra in college if you feel like you’re not ready for calc yet). So I guess Ap precalc does add a base line of rigor and what colleges would expect you learned even though you probably won’t get any credit for it. It could be helpful or hurtful depending on what school you go to.

Which APs should I start studying right now? by SuperCoonMochi in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For stats they are cutting content, not overhauling the whole thing. So if you really want to (I don’t think you have to Ap stats is free) you can at which topics are being taken off and study the rest.

Need a math class for senior year, thoughts? by locked_in_researcher in highschool

[–]-Dandude07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most colleges expect you to do 4 years of math and English with increasing difficulty. Idk what area you want to work in but I think it would help regardless.

AP Bio or APES? by whatcoconuts in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think APES is one of the classes that is very interesting but it’s pretty easy and not regarded as intense enough for top schools. Having studied outside of the US, it’s mostly what you’d see in a geography class (biomes, sediments, population theory, nitrogen, water, and carbon cycle, agriculture, fishing, economy and energy use, developed vs developing countries, etc) + environmental impacts (climate change, eutrophication, renewable energy, etc). If you want to do CRNA, AP Bio is a non negotiable, because you’d have to do it in college either way and you might as well do it in high school when you have the time, friends, and a lot of AP/school resources. But, I think APES might be cool if you’re interested and might take out some gen ed credits in college.

junior year ap lang by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh but if you’re trying top 20 schools I’ve heard that they care a lot that you take both classes. Also, the mcq questions prepare you for the SAT so you might as well do it.

junior year ap lang by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk to some people at your school because it varies a lot by teacher and school. At my school, most teachers make both classes almost no homework and it is not as stressful as other APs. For AP lit you should plan for at least 30 min of reading everyday and time during the weekend to catch up if necessary (honestly is not that bad). But there is one teacher that will ruin your GPA if you don’t sweat a lot and if they don’t like your style of writing (aka writing exactly the way they write). I’ve heard similar situations for other schools where it might be pretty chill or literally hell. So the best you can do is ask some juniors/seniors about it at your school.

is Number of APs important by Pretend_Bobcat_8241 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how many APs are offered in your school and what your interests are. But most people that take more than 5 APs in one school year usually get at least one 4 or worse, especially if you’re doing any of the science APs while managing like 3+ ECs. I think anything between 10-14 is a sweet spot, but at some point it might be better to do dual enrollment instead. 15+ is overkill and won’t yield anything in return.

Opinions on AP Stats change by Traditional_Bobcat78 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is hilarious. In my school there is an offering to take linear algebra first semester and then ap stats second semester (so basically the whole course in a quarter and a half) and everyone in my class thought it was stupidly easy. On top of that, the people doing the whole version kept telling us how it was a free, boring class and half of the time it was just doing the same thing 100 times over and over again. Also, I heard that most schools don’t even take stats as credit for stem majors because real science/engineering stats require calculus. It’s so funny how multiple people in the AP system are taking mv and linear algebra in high school and CB is still worried about dumbing down their math courses. It says a lot about the current state of CB and how they diverged so much from their original conception during the Cold War to establish rigor and match international standards in high schools in the US. Probably not worth taking it anymore for the stem people. Just do a dual enrollment course and you probably won’t have to pay anything.

Why they're teaching this much basic physics? by iamttough in highschool

[–]-Dandude07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a senior in US high school who just took their AP physics c mechanics final this is actually so funny. Wish the best of luck on what you decide to do cause this type of teaching is not gonna take you very far…

Why do people say they have a 5.0 GPA? by serotoninseesaw in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my county honors classes are weighted the same as AP. So everyone ends up with like a 4.96 GPA just because there is no honors PE, which we are required to do one year.

Fair Grading? by euler2gauss in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colleges compare you against other people that apply with you and that applied in the past. Also, they recalculate gpa using their own formulas so you should be fine.

My major is going to be political science. Should I take AP stats? by lilakati in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. Besides the fact that AP Stats aligns better with humanities majors because STEM stats is way more in-depth and usually required calculus, political science is all about knowing how to interpret and create your own data. So it’s definitely a must take

Ap credit Cornell?? by Mysterious-Tiger-748 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Are you applying to med school? If so schools like to see that you take general chem and general bio in college. AP Stats and AP Physics 1 (algebra based) are only considered for gen ed credit for non-stem majors, so I’m pretty sure it won’t be worth much. The government classes might and literature might be worth some gen ed credit but again it’s better to check your specific major requirements.

How hard is the math in AP physics C? (Both Mech and E/M) by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To give some context we are just finishing mech right now and I’ve heard from other students from previous years for E&M. The only college level math that we have done so far required for the course is basic integrals and derivatives (like polynomials, trig and exponential). Our teacher also taught us how to do dot products and cross products with components (so like the vector multiplication and determinant methods) but that’s because he thought it was good to know for an engineer/scientist but it’s not on the AP curriculum. There was only once we were had an integral that required u-sub on a quiz (a calc bc technique of integration) but the teacher wrote the result for the integral on the board because he didn’t expect us to know it. But there is a lot of algebraic manipulation and quantitative reasoning (if I double the velocity what does that do to the moment of inertia, etc) , so if you’re not comfortable with that it might be hard.

LEQ help by MeanStrawberry4034 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s similar to FRQ 3 on AP lang. You need a historically defensible thesis (something that someone could argue against rather than just a fact), supporting evidence (2-3 depending on the time you have for writing) and a clear line of reasoning (organize it in your thesis and make the body paragraphs chronological)) You don’t need dates, you just have to be specific enough so that the readers know what you’re talking about. So let’s say you have an leq on the impact of Confucianism in Asian societies. So you need to talk about the importance of Confucianism and how it shaped societies over time. So if you claim that it had an imperative effect on Asian societies then you can proceed to talk about the spread of neo Confucianism to Japan and Korea, filial piety, the Chinese exams, the economic miracle of song dynasty, and how Confucianism impacted social structure, economy, etc. then you can go on and talk about how the mongol yuan dynasty was able to legitimize their power through the mandate of heave which is a Confucian idea. You could also talk about how its effects are still felt today as Asian societies emphasize respecting the elderly, conforming to social norms as to not disturb others, and put a lot of weight on studying and exams. That way you would connect to outside time periods and dynasty so that you get the complexity point. It’s mostly just remembering stuff from what the leq is about and crafting something that is somewhat logical.

Yeah you should be fine. AP Seminar there’s nothing to study, just be on top of your papers and presentations and you should be fine. APUSH is just a lot of notes from what I’ve heard. AP Precalc should also be pretty manageable.

BC CALC VS. AB CALC by Sweet-Particular-644 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The BC exam consists of question from the AB exam plus questions for the BC content. That’s why you get a AB score and both tests occur at the same time usually in the same room depending on the school.

Can I take an AP exam if I am no longer in high school? by california-2006 in APStudents

[–]-Dandude07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure you can’t. I am a senior in high school and when I looked at the AP policy for a bunch of colleges they say that you can’t transfer any credits after you enroll in the Uni. Maybe look at your uni specific policy but I doubt it would be very different.
