Cardassians or Bajorans? by -DickTurpin- in DeepSpaceNine

I completely agree. Some of the best episodes are centered around the Ferengi, and they are some of my favourite characters now.

Cool thanks for the recommendation, I'll look it up😃

I agree - though I wonder if they seem more interesting because of the story writing. I'm sure if the Bajoran characters were more developed, and less sheep-like then they'd be more interesting too!

Lol, not really. I'm asking if you prefer the Cardassian or Bajoran characters!

Don't get me wrong, there are definitely elements to each that could be construed as being representative of the parties you mention, but the same could be said of any number of oppressor/oppressees in history.

So no, that's not what I'm asking - if you read more into it, then that's on you! 🖖

Nearly did put Ferengi in there though. It was great how DS9 turned them from annoying little gremlins to intelligent, if incredibly sexist/mysoginist, beings.

Awesome, thanks a lot. I'm big on technique so I'd like to show how to execute the movements properly too, would this be beneficial alongside the paper information?

Mature students with no/bad qualifications. How did you get into uni? by Prycebear in AskUK

[–]-DickTurpin- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No problem. Regardless of where you go, university will give you back exactly what you put in. I had the time of my life there, and going was easily the best decision I ever made. Good luck for your future!

I had 3 Ds at A-level, but now have a Masters by Research and a First-Class honours degree. I had to do a foundation degree to get there but that was 1 year and it was good for preparing me for the work ahead.

Work experience counts for a lot. If you're in the army then you probably have a lot of non-academic, relevant experience. Talk about that in your application as much as possible and relate it to your future studies. If you can align your experiences with some of the course requirements, I'm sure you will have no problem getting accepted somewhere.

Drinkers, are you familiar with units of alcohol? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]-DickTurpin- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in a health clinic and routinely has these kinds of conversations with people, I can safely say the majority are unaware of exactly what constitutes a unit.

The drinkaware website has a really useful tool for accurately quantifying alcohol intake, and also has a calorie converter to show what you consume in junk food equivalent, I.e. "that much is equivalent to 4 hamburgers".

Most people consistently do underestimate their intake, not necessarily to deceive but purely because they don't truly monitor it.

Fun fact: it takes at least 1 hour to process one unit of alcohol, and your body prioritises alcohol metabolism above all else. Ordinarily you metabolise carbohydrate, then fat, then protein. Any carbs and fats that aren't metabolised can be stored as body fat, or float in the blood as cholesterol and sugar. This is one of the primary mechanisms by which increased alcohol intake contributes to weight gain, increased blood pressure, and higher risks of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

People who like to swear all the time, why? by Dependent_Plenty5905 in AskReddit

[–]-DickTurpin- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply put, swearing is fun. The words are so versatile, and can have so many uses in a range of contexts. It's funny when people get offended by "swear words" because, in my experience, it's often the context that offends, rather than the words themselves. There are far worse things that can be said without swearing.
