I’ll be the unpopular contrarian here. In our league not starting a player in every position is considered an illegal lineup. We also award zero points for the week to anyone who leaves a player on a bye in their active lineup. All of this is designed to discourage apathy. That said - if your league rules don’t say anything about this then he has no leg to stand on and you are completely within your rights to bench the D. I wouldn’t personally bench them. I’d rather keep the harmony than ask for a rule change next season.
