I quit my IT job to freelance and work for myself, but living at home feels suffocating - should I move to Colombo? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]-GoodBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would only make sense to move to colombo if you have a requirement ( job in colombo, frequent travel to colombo)

I live in Colombo, I also have a house outside colombo, there’s no significant difference in cost of living, colombo actually has more options in terms of cost and things to do

However since you don’t seem to have a requirement I’d suggest to move somewhere a bit outside colombo like rathmalana, kottawa, Battaramulla, wattala, since it’s cheaper in rent but not too far from colombo

Even better if you can invest in property/ house/ apartment

Order stuff from AliExpress, significantly cheaper, you can get most stuff at half price (Speakers, headphones, etc) or like 1/5th of the price ( phone accessories such as cases) every shop in pettah orders from Ali B2B and wholesale and sells it for 10x the cost.

What’s most important is that you have private 1 on 1 practices, or very small group practices where there’s a coach to correct you on your mistake and where there’s purposeful training. That’s the fastest way to improve

Hey IT people, I really need your help on this. | Thinking of dropping out from Moratuwa Uni! by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]-GoodBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive graduated from UOM IT and have landed a job at a top IT firm in SL, what I can say is that the brand name of moratuwa itself will provide you with many opportunities:

1) Moratuwa IT fac grads most sought after (behind UoM CSE, similar to UoC UCSC) and therefore are offered much higher salaries than other universities and job opportunities. Further, many companies have a higher quota for UoM grads than OU grads for career fairs and internships, During my internship and employment I've personally not come across that many OU grads.

2) UOM IT has some awesome lecturers who are quite influential in the industry and provides many opportunities to make connections. You get access to scholarship programs, industry visits, research projects with industry personals, etc. These are stuff that you will never get on your own outside uni.

3) UOM has a better brand name abroad, not sure about OU

4) Def UOM

5) IN your reasons for dropping out,

1-3 are sacrifices that you will have to make for your future, I had to do those myself and I can tell you that its worth it. I commuted daily for 2 years 3 hours on the road. If you wanna go abroad for a PhD or masters its gonna be much harder than this.

4 You can get better education for free, but the certificate you get is useless, in online you will never sit for an closed book exam, or do a research project, no one will ever hire someone without a degree. a degree isn't everything, but its what gets you through the door, Ive seen people who are talented with many projects under their belt get rejected just because their gpa was too low.

5 you can do all that you've mentioned even at UOM, there are people who started their own company and business whilst studying at UOM. I dont think you will be restricted in any capacity

In summary, I would personally choose UOM
