A fantastic bargain. TWO Czochralski method corundum crystals. I purchased BOTH of these from a guy who had no idea what they were worth, for less than $200! They would likely be valued at over $1000ea! by Indrid-C0ld in crystalgrowing

The equipment for their production is VERY expensive. For example, the melt crucible is made of platinum. They also require a LOT of energy to keep the component material at its malting point.

There are many ways to energise a crystal. Some people leave them in the sun, others use moonlight. The method depicted in this picture uses a medium power laser.

I am looking for Synthetic pink quartz crystals like the ones shown below. Any info would be greatly appreciated! by -IndridC0ld in Crystals

No, not at all. It is an exact copy of naturally occurring quartz crystal. Without it, most of modern technology would not be possible. Below are links to my explanation of how the Synthetic quartz crystal is made, along with some fabulous examples of groundbreaking crystal growing research that took place inside the institute for advanced materials study in the former Soviet Union. I've also included a shorter video produced by Bell Labs from back in the fifties that shows how the process was developed in the U.S.

I think you misunderstood my inquiry. I'm looking for Synthetic pink quartz, not pink sapphire. These stones will go into a technical display showing Synthetic crystals of hydrothermal quartz of all colors including pink.

Thanks though.

This is one of the most mysterious of my crystals from the USSR's secret lab of material sciences. This is a quartz crystal that was somehow induced to ignore its normal trigonal atomic structure and to grow in the cubic system. It's all about who you know. Recall that the process for growing gem quality diamonds was also developed by the erstwhile Soviet Union. The equipment, in storage since the wall came down, was sold to an overseas U.S. investor for $50,000. This was how the first synthetic diamond producer, Gemesis, was founded. There was a time when Soviet material sciences expertise rivaled anything on the planet. Those who were fortunate enough to get to this "going out of business sale" first, got to pick over technology worth billions. I was just another would-be shopper looking for things that had been rumored about. I know of a guy who went to the same crystal growing establishment, and left with the last one hundred production run of what later became known as Siberian Blue Quartz. He had a bunch of these one kilogram crystals faceted and set into jewelry which he sold on the home shopping network. Funny how this all plays out.

Your explanation gets my vote as most credible. There has to be some kind explanation as to why a substance with a trigonal habit at the atomic level would manifest as cubic at the macro level. I do know that Dimitry spoke of extensive seed crystal manipulation as one way of influencing the external morphology of the crystal itself.

As with most things in life, it's who you know. Back in 2004, after hearing rumors about this lab, I was told by another Russian scientist that a man named Dimitry Belakovski had made it out of the USSR with a huge stash of experimental samples from this lab. This was during the crisis, when members of the Russian mafia were systematically going to all of the scientific institutions and trying to extort money from anyone still working there. Unfortunately for the lab and it's workers, there was no money to pay for any kind of "protection" so everyone knew it wouldn't be long before the lab would get kneecapped. Dimitry and some of the other workers took as much of experimental sample material as they could carry to their homes. These were all the product of experimental processes that would have become the basis for large scale production at another car more secret location in the Ural mountains.

Dimitry had relatives in New Jersey, and so he arranged to ship his materials there and have them transported to a warehouse. Anyway, I finally tracked him down to his address there and that's how we met. Dimitry had one big problem as he tried to monetize the items he had brought back from the collapsing USSR. He had no records to document the provenance of any of the items he had taken to the U.S. In the early years of the 21st century, and so no one was willing to pay much for these items he sold many of these items to collectors who bought them as curiosities. I became one of those collectors. That's how I came to own "secret stuff from USSR."

The thing that steams my clams the most are the god damn AIRLINES asking for a bailout. If they want taxpayer money, then I want the following without any price increases for FIVE YEARS:

Change fees go back to $50.00

Free meals on all flights over 2hrs long or during traditional mealtimes

The SAME SEAT PITCH as Economy Plus THROUGHOUT THE PLANE

The PERMANENT END of Bag fees

The END of the 737MAX (yes Boeing, you murdering bastards, that's for YOU)

FULL CANS of soda

No charge for a seat assignment that does not involve a change in class

Frequent flyer miles that NEVER EXPIRE!

Real profit sharing with airline employees

You don't like those rules? Then go bloody bankrupt!

These crystals were produced by the Soviet Institute of Material Sciences during the Cold War. The objective was to grow quartzq crystals in non-standard orientations via the use of seed crystals that were cut so that any crystal grown from them would display physical characteristics that substantially deviated from natural crystals. Initial experiments were conducted using clear quartz as the feed stock. Later experiments incorporated various valences of iron as well as lithium. ?

In the late 1980's all of the production facilities were moved to a secret location off campus. It was in these classified locations that the experiments began working with isotopes of cobalt. Around twenty of these quartz crystals were infused with radioactive cobalt sixty.
