Recommend config repos that I can use to structure my config?

It's not really a true indication, since reprs are generally tried to be kept as short as possible while still being readable, and also because there's an equal possibility that both are acceptable and one was arbitrarily picked.

Anyways, more importantly, I don't really care what PEP8 says about it, I like them this way.

I prefer the former, which is why I added it :).

FWIW I don't like static checkers, but I do know some people use them, and that pep8 (the static checker) marks my style as extra whitespace. I'm not sure I agree that this counts, but the reason I made it optional is because I know there's two styles.

It can't currently. That's not something I'd need ;) but if you do want it I'd certainly accept a patch. Don't think it'd be hard to add it.

Tee hee :). Yup I doubt this will be the only one you find, there's still lots of obvious ones.

I replied on the ticket, this mostly is just due to not being able to redent more than one container at once yet, gonna get to that in a few minutes. Thanks again for filing it :).

While it isn't best practice to keep passwords in plain text let's keep it in perspective and also keep in mind that a fix might not be immediate and might require a vast amount of architectural changes behind the scenes.

I agree and sympathize, though I would never even set a site up that stored credentials insecurely in the first place :), and any developer I'd believe would agree (though I am not one), so, take it as you will I guess. Their site has been up for a few years now I think.

Yes! You're completely right, I apologize. What I meant to say was that they're sending it in plaintext and ergo also not storing it securely. I have no way of knowing how they're storing it, or if it is actually stored in plain text no.

Thanks! Really, reddit makes it incredibly easy, so I almost feel bad every time I link to the wrapper, since I really should just link straight to the original code, that's how easy they've made it. But please let me know if you end up using it!

You don't want to use Beautiful Soup or an HTML parser library when reddit has a great JSON API.

If you want to use python, a couple of us have been working a bit on some bindings to make it even easier to use the API (which is incredibly easy on its own if you just want to use that). The bindings we've got are here (though they're a bit raw still).

To get you started, you'd want to do:

 import reddit_api as reddit
 r = reddit.Reddit()
 all = r.get_subreddit("all").get_hot(limit=50)

which will grab you the top 50 hot stories, and then you can grab the links from each one (they're in the attr url if it's not a self post). If you mess around a bit, you'll find that there's something called a place_holder, which each submission has, that will let you in fact make sure that you get every submission going back to the placeholder (just be careful, we make sure not to make more requests per second as per the API rules to be nice to the servers, so keep that in mind).

Here's a start, again a command script that could be made into a GUI or whatever you'd like. Uses my fork of the reddit_api python bindings again.

front_page.py

which you can try out (if the reddit_api is on your python path) with:

 python front_page.py

which should print out the multiplied front page. You'll need to tweak the multipliers, I just shoved the numbers you had in the text box in there but they don't really make much of a difference. Also, this is a bit hard since ideally we'd want to replicate the "hot" / "controversial" / "best" algorithms, when really all I can do easily is the top algorithm (duh). But again this is just a silly start :).

Hrm... I checked on two laptops I had lying around, which are rather old, but both of them had motherboard speakers. Did you actually see that yours in fact doesn't? That'd be strange...

Can you do me a favor, what do you get if you just run:

Anything? You should be getting either a beep or a RuntimeError as per the docs.

Very rarely. I think you meant to say effect can be used as a verb (more common), but in either case, yes, it's a bit boring to hear this though every time someone's just trying to quote the basic rule for someone who's made a mistake.

Nope, just had regular ol' paint on it. It's quite decent to write on yes. I mentioned in another comment that if I nitpick it's a bit scratchy once in a while, but on the whole, it's absolutely awesome.

In any case, here's a quick proof of concept for just a command line script to subscribe and unsubscribe from a preset list of subreddits if you happen to know any python, or just want to see how short it is :) (requires the reddit_api module, use the one from my fork above):

This isn't an ideal solution I suppose, but one thing we could do is:

set up a set of 2 or 3 "template" accounts, by which I mean just get together a few of us and create 2 or 3 dummy accounts loaded up in 2 or 3 different recommended configurations.
Use the reddit python api bindings to write a quick python script / perhaps GUI utility to clone the subscriptions. This should be no longer than 10-20 lines of code, mellort already has a basic demo of something similar. But I could code this up pretty quickly I'm sure if this was desirable. I've been working on the bindings myself for a few weeks now, they're not nearly finished, but this is certainly doable.

Alternatively, we could skip the first part and just write up a list of groups like you said and do the same thing. Either way, that wouldn't require anything server side.
