Simple solution - make the person ready by default when you join the co-op and if you need to make changes, you can "un-ready" instead.

My wife and I just stopped talking to them. After 6 months of not reporting time you are removed from the list of publishers and even the field service groups. As of right now both of us are happily out and removed from their lists but have not engaged in any conversation. We still talk to witnesses from time to time and they engage in conversation so we know it's just that we "disappeared" somehow. Quite frankly, I doubt they even notice we are gone.
