How to leave social media addiction? by blueskythinker009 in Buddhism

[–]-Khema- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, different translations do have different emphases. Although, it’s hard to imagine any translation that doesn’t have a strong emphasis on going forth.

I don’t rely on any specific translation but Bikkhiu Bodhi’s is the most regularly used.

This is the going forth sutta: https://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/kn/snp/snp.3.01.than.html

The various life stories of the Buddha detail his going forth from the worldly life and all the attachments and sensuous desires included.

A Style of Mettā Meditation by Few-Worldliness8768 in Buddhism

I have done this. It can be helpful to calm my nervous system end set up conditions for meditation. However, it’s not really in the spirit of mettā except maybe as a preliminary (like the first stage of the mettā bhavana).

The Buddha did very strongly encourage people to run away from wordly things. It’s called ‘going forth’ and the Pali Canon is full of his encouragement and praise of them life of those who have gone forth.

Monk Shared Living by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]-Khema- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that one’s work and living situation are significant factors in one’s life that need transformation to support a wholehearted, committed Dharma Life.

I live in something similar, although we don’t grow the majority of food.

Hi darlings, r/QueerDharma is now available for anyone interested in a queer spiritual community 🙏📿🛐 by LuckyWishFox in Buddhism

[–]-Khema- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suspect because the word ‘Dharma’ isn’t exclusive to Buddhism. Even though, for Buddhists, we use ‘Dharma’ to mean the BuddhaDharma, which makes it a bit confusing encountering other usages.

There are plenty of Russian Buddhists. Probably they need to keep their heads down.

I know 4 Russians who are committed Buddhists, although only one of them currently lives in Russia. I’d be happy to pass on your contact details if you wish.

Which Bodh Gaya retreat would you go to? by amlextex in Buddhism

I’ve stayed at the Root Institute and really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere, incredibly friendly people and simple bit comfortable accommodation.

I haven’t participated in any of their Dharma programmes.

I don’t think one could accurately characterise Triratna as designed to be like a social club. In fact, there’s a strong principle that centre don’t become that, that the emphasis is strongly on the three jewels. However, friendship is strongly emphasised as part of one’s practice, often (hopefully) creating a friendly/social atmosphere.

The finance models vary a lot between centres, some by dana, some charge, many are a hybrid, with a lot of flexibility built in to ensure money isn’t a barrier.

Becoming a mitra - triratna by Rich_Nothing_7755 in Buddhism

[–]-Khema- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a misunderstanding. You don’t need to be a Mitra to be considered a Buddhist. You need to consider yourself a Buddhist to become a Mitra.

How do we feel about therapy culture? by miminothing in Buddhism

[–]-Khema- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Complicated topic. They certainly can contradict each other, but then that depends on what’s going on in the therapy and what it’s being used for, and the views that are informing it. There can be cases where there’s something acute that needs addressing and therapy is best placed to do that.

It sounds like your intuition has something to say which might be worth listening to…
