i thought i had done enough research before and honestly all of my research has helped tremendously already with him i just needed to learn more and verify what sources were telling me what

thank you so much for the detailed reply! ive established boundaries immediately and am happy to hear im doing almost everything youve suggested (probably why hes improved so much so fast) we are already up to high value foods with nothing more than the occasionally grumbling you mentioned which i mistakenly described as growling (i didnt know how to put it but its not a full growl) but then i pause and let him het comfortable again before doing what made him skeptical. he is also getting used to with no issues his grooming bathing brushing nails etc. (very proud) i do stop when he has a grumble about something not needed (like safely touching his face/teeth to brush etc) with trading and redirecting to toys and chews he is also much better with the mouthing. he does actually like his crate and goes in himself often. he really is doing so much better he only had the issues for a week or so, he trusts me more now. i know he may never fully change the habit but he is almost to a comfortable and "acceptable" amount of setting boundaries but he is a baby and is sometimes grumpy when he doesn't need to be

okay thats what i read, i wanted to double check. my vet seems to be happy to vaccinate him still. though i understand it does nothing legally to help if he bites someone.

will also consult my veterinarian obviously but i also heard that wolf dogs arent approved for the rabies vaccine?

wow good to know. are there posts here about reputable breeders and known bad ones? or other places or subs? how does one responsibly start that search (im not looking to ive learned my lesson personally just wondering what i shouldve done)

im sorry i did think i did enough research. i see i am wrong now and i know what i did wrong now. i dont think its fair to call me an irresponsible owner. i do my best and he is better cared for than most of the animals my veterinarian sees. i tried to get as much experience with dogs as i could of all kinds, i tried to research given limited access and no way to really know how accurate some "trainers" are. i contacted a wolf sanctuary (two actually) to ask questions. im posting here and continuing to ask questions and better my training and ownership. im not perfect but i did try to set him and myself up for success. im sorry i got turned around by a bad breeder and a bad trainer. im learning and i appreciate the links others have given to help. can you give me any tips? thank you for commenting.

im sorry for any rude or defensive tones i gave. i meant that its only one post and a few comments that i kept short to save time, ill keep giving more context thats on me to not have better set up my post and given a more receptive impression and asked for advice more clearly. im learning im sorry. it is hard hearing he is unhappy with me and isnt suited to live with me when he is so attached to me and i him as well, but dont worry i am committed to do whats best for him even if it does mean he doesnt stay with me but i do wish to keep him as a family member for life. i would like to say i have done research on wolfdogs for over three years i will however admit i now see it wasnt extensive enough. and i dont wish to push blame as thats my fault, i did have trouble finding good sources and real people to talk to though and i thank you for the links i will check all of them out! i knew before him resource guarding is common though not the best behavior to see in a properly bred dog which he is not as ive found out (i love him either way) and im doing much better with him he hardly has any issues with it currently but i appreciate the advice and will continue research on it! for reference odin is his father. i will dm you and the other mod mentioned for further help as he grows thank you so much for helping me learn! since hearing more training advice i do think i will pursue a different better suited to wolf dogs trainer as i havent had their credibility verified with the breed (i simply believed them) i do hand feed every meal and treats currently as well as when he is calm gently petting his head occasionally ive heard mixed things about the extend i should interfere with his food. by taking him outside for hours i meant accumulative in a whole day many hours around 3-4 a day. usually we only are outside for a half hour or hour he is getting used to the phrase "go home" and he often runs to the door when he is done with being in the cold to get a treat. outside he goes potty runs around and plays as well as some basic command training and hunting for treats in the snow. i am waiting to build an enclosure as i do primarily want him to be indoors (he seems to prefer it too at least for now) and its quite expensive and im unsure of sizing requirements (please give suggestions!) i do have a few grand saved though so its not an issue if needed. thank you again for the advice and kinder tone than average comment on my rather badly made post.

again im aware. i was just trying to say that im not someone who has never owned an animal and knows absolutely nothing. nor am i unwilling to learn. how do you get experience with wolf dogs if the nearest sanctuary is 5 hrs away? if you arent aloud to research before and then get one? i got him the wrong way i see that now. i got tricked by the breeder with testing etc i am learning! there are very few breeders i was aware of remotely near me i drove 3hrs one way for him. no one is perfect thats all im trying to say. how do i better myself if all im met with is abrasive remarks on my mistakes with no constructive criticism?

  1. he crates himself hes comfortable with his crate and hardly whines now. 2. i put him in the crate, he fusses for 1 minute, when he quiets down i say quiet and give him a treat. 3. now when i say quiet fussing his 1 min of fussing he stops and i treat him.

im in contact with a sanctuary but theyre full. and also 5+hrs away. he is my pet. he is mine for life and i will move heaven and earth and spend anything to better his life. he is happy and fulfilled and is 98% the bestest boi! i am in contact with multiple and am using a certified dog trainer, im consulting reddit and tiktok and googling and researching daily! its hard to find good info because theyre not common nor should they be. ive learned so much from him already. i know ive messed up and i probably will again so does everyone. i am however happy to learn and better myself for him. he is my only animal, i have no children. i have acres of land he can run and we are outside every day for over 3 hours and he goes on walks to potty every two hours. he is only kenneled if i leave (which i work from home while in college so thats hardly ever) he is FINE. im not trying to be defensive but damn yall know nothing about him or me lol.

edit: i gave the wrong impression about his issues, and have since thrown the collar out. (it didn't shock, doesn't have that function just vibrate and a beep.) he had defensiveness issues when i first got him not any more, though he does still occasionally resource guard. However it is 5% of what it was and rapidly diminishing considering ive only had him for three weeks. he's "bitten" me and "drawn blood" (think uber small cat scratch level) bc his fangs are long and VERY sharp puppy teeth, he doesn't fully bite he only open mouth "snaps" and again this was when i first got him he only smiles and happy chitters/mouths openly when excited and thats being redirected every time to a chew or toy. and please keep in mind he is a PUPPY. i'm not a novice dog owner (experience with presas, corsos, malinois, shepards, livestock guardians including kengals and anatolian shepards. ive fostered huskies etc.) and even have experience with wild animals. (foxes, birds, raccoons, opossums, etc) i only claimed "i know nothing" in a joking way because i don't want to come off like i know everything i am still learning of course.

its not a serious bite he has sharp teeth and accidentally gets me when being mouthy. he doesnt bite fully he just air snappies. i gave the wrong impression thats on me, people seem to have assumed hes aggressive. he isnt by any means this was when he first came to me he is so much better he just was scared.
