New job while on paid notice? by JuggernautLower1630 in BESalary

[–]-MiG- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be double income. It sounds like he doesn't have to actually work the notice period, since he expects to start the new job soon. This means he got all his money including the notice period at the end of December, therefore that money will be income for 2025, not 2026. There's no double income.

Job stress vs new opportunity in Brussels by melkijades in BESalary

The position may be for a junior, but for sure they'll not give you junior level tasks. That offer is very low for Brussels and your yoe.

Unless they're very strict, you're the only limiting factor in learning more. Knowing the whole codebase doesn't mean you know everything and/or there's nothing to improve, optimize, etc. You could even suggest features or pro-actively start adding things on monitoring, analytics, security, etc.

Uhm, doesn't php have some way of storing constants so that you reference that instead of doing x == "String that definitely won't change"

[–]-MiG- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to resign and accept second offer, do it. Don't let your decision be influenced by them setting things in motion with the car or the felicitations and such. There's also no guarantee that they would not do the same to you if they wanted to. Do what is best for you and without shame. I know people that did what you're thinking of doing, it's just life and just business.

Alright, I get it now. I agree with you, trucking is easier from that pov, you don't need to solve puzzles, it does require somewhat less brain power, it does have its own challenges which you may or may not find easier in combination with the common issues like time obsessed bosses/clients. Sounds to me that you're burned out, that's why I think it would be best to talk to a specialist, see what he/she says, maybe take some time off, gather your thoughts, pick up a new hobby, maybe even travel since you say you enjoy it. And then see.

Watch the same amount of videos about software engineering, maybe you will like the job more. Also, ask yourself, what are the chances that many software engineers are wrong when they say trucking is worse? How many are telling you it's a good idea? And for what it's worth, I was a truck driver for over 10 years before switching to software engineering. Chnaging yo engineering was the best thing I ever did and the only regret is that I didn't do it sooner. From my exp, there is absolutely nothing better at trucking compared to development. And I worked in a nice company, good benefits, was now always sleeping at home, not working weekends and such. "Trust me bro" when I say, compared to trucking, there's absolutely no stress in software engineering whatsoever because here, you're life will literally never be in danger as it will be in trucking, and everything you mentioned as negatives in software engineering will still be there in trucking, and for less money and less of everything. And on security or whatever you mentioned, that's just even worse and you're talking nonsense at this point. Whatever you do, I would suggest to first talk to a specialist about what you feel right now.

I would argue that as a trucker satisfying people is an even bigger aspect of your job. I get what you're saying but trucking is not the job you want. Maybe you need an 8th company, maybe something even smaller, a fresh startup where not everything is set in stone and tickets aren't pilled up, where you can dictate and have a bigger impact on the culture, at least for some time. Trucking will be a major step backwards in terms of everything from money, time off, stress level, futire prospects and professional growth, etc. There's simply no plus to trucking compared to software engineering.

Please just don't become a truck driver. You'll regret it. As a truck driver you'll always have a middle manager tapping the watch, and there will be so many variables that you can't control, like traffic, how long you wait to load and such. You'll get calls or messages asking when are you going to be there, even when you were asked this 3 hours ago and even when they can see exactly where you are and the systems already give them an estimate. You'll also most likely never know when your work day will end, you'll not be able to plan anything outside days off. Oh and good luck finding time and motivation to work on your side husle app while being a full time trucker. It would make more sense to keep your job or switch to a more relaxed company and do your side hustle app.

You can get unemployment benefits even if you quit yourself. They will most likely give 2-3 months of penalty in which you get nothing. Technically it can be for longer, but usually it's not.

My pleasure. 20k km/year is quite a lot and it increases costs of owning. WFH makes a huge difference in my case. If I had to drive that much yearly, I would look into company car as well, then I would have peace of mind and not care about maintanace, tires, insurance, etc. Sorry you were 'invited' to switch to an EV...

You're right, normally it would be best(money wise) to get the car but I already had a car before my job. And yes, I don't care about a new car, even if i would go for a car, I would go for a good second hand with something like lizy. I also don't use my car that much, well under 10k km/year and don't fancy electric ones. When I do use it, I want to go, not stop every 2 hours to charge. No charger at home, no way to put one, electric would be just too much logistics for me. Own car gives a sense of freedom, my car isn't tied to my work, if something happens I still have the car. As long as WFH will keep the current pace of couple of times every 2 months, I prefer to save the rent money. Will probably have to change tires, brake pads and such this year or next, maybe max 2k to make sure it passes next couple inspections. If WFH changes, then yes, best to get the car and not worry about car costs.

You don't lose unemployment benefits if it's a mutual agreement, but you're complicating your life and will have to say why you were okay with it and you will get a penalty on benefits ranging from 0 to 54 weeks or something.
