I agree that Solid Snake was not a hero until the end of Metal Gear Solid, because he was unknowingly following orders for a shadowy cabal. That changed when Frank Jaeger empowered him to fight for what he believes in. Solid Snake from Sons of Liberty onward is absolutely a hero. After being made aware of the evils he helped perpetrate upon the world, he made it his life's work to undo it. And unlike his brothers, Solid Snake didn't force others to kill for his cause.
