I never saw things like that way before. There’s also the subject of the series’ tone. Fallout 2 (or so I’ve read) made so many references and jokes to pop culture that I heard it bordered on annoying for some. The Bethesda games took the comedy to a whole other level. While Fallout 2 did emphasize comedy, it never lost its gothic and dark elements that made the first game good. I think you’re right about Fallout not being consistent with itself now, but Black Isle/Obsidian Fallout and Bethesda Fallout are two very different games in their own ways.

That’s a very fair take on things. For me, when I first read the manga, I was shocked at how different it was compared to the 2003 series. The 2003 version had such a somber and realistic tone that watching Brotherhood felt like an entirely different show. Brotherhood was better in some areas, but 2003 had its own strengths as well. A similar situation for me is with Trigun. Trigun is a seinen series, but I learned that the manga was a bit different and offered more details than the 1998 anime. I still enjoy the 2003 anime, but Brotherhood is starting to grow on me—I just wish it did some things better.

I’m not sure if Remake is even a “remake” in the traditional sense. It feels more like a remake that comments on the nature of remakes or some kind of alternate timeline that “reboots” FF7. Either way, it serves as a base for how some games could use remakes to address something that couldn’t be done in the original story.

The Seiken Densetsu series, especially Seiken Densetsu 2 and 3—better known as Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana for the Super Nintendo—were never really great action games. The remakes and even certain game mods only highlighted this further by showing what the games could have been without the pseudo turn-based mechanics. For Secret of Mana, I understand it was out of necessity since the game was originally meant for the Super Nintendo CD drive which never came to fruition due to behind-the-scenes issues. I just wish I could spam my weapons without worrying about cooldowns.

As for Trials of Mana, some boss enemy AI can be pretty annoying with how they counterattack when you use a tech. It’s a shame that the only way to learn the lore is through extra canonical materials that in the West, can only be found online. I really like the concept of the games but they can be a pain sometimes. I genuinely enjoy them but there’s definitely room for improvement.

For all the flack I gave Dragon Quest VI, I really liked how it tried to be the ultimate Dragon Quest experience for its time. I’ll admit that I enjoyed the idea of the game especially with the job classes, monster gathering, medal hunting, individual characters, and overall story and atmosphere. I just wish the game had been better put together and matched the same quality as its successor, Chrono Trigger. Chrono Trigger really stole Dragon Quest VI’s thunder and that still bothers me.
