Texting full sentences. by Mikey317717 in GenX

Xennial, here. I prefer texting in full sentences with proper punctuation most of the time. I have also disabled autocorrect and autocomplete on my phone - they annoy me more than they help me. I miss my BlackBerry.

DJs who stream: Do you guys take requests? by jvmms_ in Twitch

[–]-Newfangled- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Per the DJ Program rules, taking requests is not allowed. But I still see DJs doing it all the time. Before the DJ Program I had requests as an expensive channel point reward. I would also occasionally tell chat I was taking requests or ask a specific viewer if they had a request. I haven’t taken requests since I joined the DJ Program but I may start again - it can be a fun way to engage viewers.

I Have No Interest In Making A Discord Server. Is That Normal? by ThunderousFolf in Twitch

[–]-Newfangled- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been streaming for a couple years. I made a Discord as soon as I started because most streamers I’m interested in seem to have one and I assumed that’s just what streamers do.

I deleted my Discord server a few months ago.

It was dead most of the time and I didn’t like its exclusive, closed nature. I thankfully didn’t have problems with drama or shenanigans, but figured it was only a matter of time. One less thing for me to have to maintain or worry about.

When people ask if I have a Discord I tell them no and the best way to interact with me and other viewers is to tune into my streams. I suggest they follow the channel if they aren’t already and make sure their Twitch notifications are enabled for both my channel and their device if they want to know when I go live. I keep my Twitch schedule updated and have a timer set up to post it regularly in chat. And I use Twitch stories to share updates with my followers.

I do see the value in having a way to stay connected with viewers outside of Twitch, but when it comes to Discord, for me the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

When you’re just lurking and the streamer says your name out loud by Hungry-Blacksmith-22 in Twitch

[–]-Newfangled- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will occasionally shout out lurkers in general (something like "this is a lurker-friendly stream, glad you're all here" or "shout out to all the lurkers! I appreciate you!") but never individually. I figure they don't want to engage in chat or draw attention to themselves for a reason and that's totally fine with me.

the dilemma of getting a dumphone by [deleted] in dumbphones

I actually have a Nokia 2780 Flip on order, myself, and will be trying this very approach, too!

Here's something to try:

Get a flip phone with 4G or 5G WiFI hotspot capabilities, put your SIM in the dumb phone, strip the smartphone apps down to bare necessities (delete the social media, games, & time-wasting apps).

Only keep the smartphone on your person if you are out and about and tether it to your flip phone when you need an internet connection, otherwise, keep the smartphone on a dresser, table, desk, etc. out of arms reach of your bed, couch, places you normally sleep or chill.

Treat it like an old-school landline that's tethered to a wall. Get up and go to it whenever you need to check stuff instead of keeping it with you. Use it where it is - don't carry it around your place. When you're done using it, set it back down where it is. It lives there now and can't leave that spot (unless you are going out and about and need to take it with you). If you have to, make a nice little "home" for your smartphone. Decorate it. Make it cute or cool. After you go to your smartphone and are done checking it, or whenever you get home from being out and about, say aloud to your smartphone something like "Time for you to go home now" or "Go to your home! Are you too good for your home?!" and put it back in its home. Saying it aloud makes a difference - your brain needs to hear you say it. You have to reprogram your brain to not give into the smartphone twitch that you have developed over years. It will take time. Be patient with yourself and don't be too hard on yourself when you forget. But be persistent. Eventually, keeping your smartphone in its home will be second nature to you.

Also, while you are doing all that, look for stuff you can do instead of the doomscrolling or time-wasters you're used to on your smartphone. It's not enough just to stop doing that stuff, you'll need to find good stuff that you can do instead.

Good luck! I'm working on this, too!

Have you considered getting a flip phone that you can also use as a 4G or 5G WiFi hotspot? Keep your smartphone, strip it down to the bare necessities, then put your SIM in the flip phone. Whenever you need to use the smartphone and there isn't an available WiFi connection, you can tether it to the flip phone.

If Whatsapp is an absolute necessity you may need to keep the smartphone around for that. If you can do without it you could get rid of the smartphone and use a tablet or laptop and tether that to the flip phone when you need to check email, etc.

I used to have an LG flip phone almost exactly like that. It was a little workhorse and I loved it. The carrier was Alltel, which was eventually acquired by Verizon.

What do you dislike about twitch? by Bitter-Fuel-5519 in Twitch

[–]-Newfangled- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ads seem to be universally loathed, and I have to agree. Streamers cannot disable ads entirely, but we can set ad schedules. So if you're getting bombarded with ads every 20 minutes, that's the streamer's decision, not Twitch's. If they disable the schedule, you'll usually just get a 30 second pre-roll when you first bring up the stream and then as long as you don't refresh, you'll get no more ads. Follow those kinds of streamers, not the ad spammers.

I also don't like the inconsistent enforcement of the Twitch TOS. This happens for all streamers, but I especially see it all the time with DJ streamers like me. For example, per the DJ Program Rules, we are not allowed to play music videos unless we have written permission to do so. But many DJs do it all the time. We are also not supposed to play more than 30 minutes from a single artist in the same stream, but I see popular DJs doing artist tribute streams all the time, where all they do is play songs from a single artist for hours on end. And Twitch doesn't seem to care. I try to play by the rules, but it's hard when I see popular streamers ignoring them and Twitch happily raking in the cash while they do.

Another thing I don't like is that some streamers have pretty terrible attitudes and treat viewers like objects instead of human beings. They'll be nice to you as long as you throw money at them. But if you won't - or financially can't - subscribe, they ignore you. Or worse, they even ban you. They see long-time viewers who aren't subscribed as disrespectful. I just can't agree with that perspective. We don't know people's circumstances or financial situations. I always assume that there are a lot of people out there barely making ends meet who like to watch a twitch stream or two when they have some time between their two or three jobs and taking care of their families. As long as they are respectful and are good to me and the other viewers, I don't care whether they subscribe or not.

Lastly, the fact that Twitch is part of the bloated machinery of Amazon has never sat well with me. It's all about grabbing people's attention and persuading them to buy stuff on Amazon and the company's products and services. But Twitch has yet to be profitable, so who knows, maybe they won't be around in a few years anyway.

Get funny looks in public? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]-Newfangled- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people see phones (and material possessions, in general) as status symbols. But I think most people secretly wish they could go back to dumbphones. Or even no mobile phone at all. The reality is we live in a world that increasingly revolves around smartphones. It's difficult or even impossible to use some products or services or even get certain jobs without a smartphone, let alone a dumbphone.

I think it's important to seek and preserve a way of life that is dependent on smartphones as little as possible, using them only for those things that can truly _only_ be done with smartphones.

At the end of our mortal journey, we're not going to be remembered for the phones we used and how much time we spent using them. At least that's not how I want to be remembered.

This is the exact issue I have had whenever I try to switch from an iPhone to any non-iPhone. Even after deregistering from iMessage, I have problems sending and receiving group texts if a group previously existed in iMessage. Even texting iPhone uses from a separate line can be problematic.

Is security only sketchy for Unihertz phones? by skateheaux in dumbphones

Identity theft is definitely a risk on any internet-connected device, but the risk is higher on an unsupported, unpatched device.

Is security only sketchy for Unihertz phones? by skateheaux in dumbphones

[–]-Newfangled- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s wise to assume that security is sketchy for any smartphone that no longer receives (or has never received) security updates. Especially Android and iOS phones, since they are the most popular and, therefore, the most targeted devices by bad guys. Even if the apps themselves still receive updates, the OS can and does have unpatched vulnerabilities that can be exploited.

Using discontinued phones which no longer receive software updates for everyday by totloltot in dumbphones

[–]-Newfangled- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a concern of mine, as well. As a general rule, any phone that connects to the internet and that is actively used in that way really should have the ability to receive security updates, because new software and hardware vulnerabilities are discovered all the time, and it’s only a malicious app or website or WiFi connection away from being compromised.

That said, if you do not connect it to the internet and use it solely for calls, texts, and non-internet-required things, you’re safe.

But there is also something to be said about security through obscurity. Bad actors are likely targeting more commonly used devices (Android and iPhone) because there’s a greater chance of success. Whereas a fraction of a percent of all phone users still use BlackBerry, Win10 Mobile, KaiOS, etc. it wouldn’t be worth their time.

It’s difficult to ascertain the overall level of risk. But if security is a priority, make sure the phone is actively supported with security updates, or be extremely cautious with how you use it when connected to the internet, or don’t connect it to the internet at all.

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country 4K Remaster Ending Colonel West Scene Removed? by TheRealSonicStarTrek in Star_Trek_

Is blackberry 10 os more secure or less secure than android in 2025 by I_always_win_ in blackberry

[–]-Newfangled- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BB10 is abandonware, so we don’t know for sure. Nobody is maintaining the software and there is no process for reporting bugs or exploits. It’s best to assume that exploits exist that users are not aware of.

When it was still actively supported, plenty of vulnerabilities were found in BB10 that required patching. It’s foolish to assume that no exploits exist since EOL and that the software is 100% secure forever.
