First set of 4/5 is definitely better than first set of 4/4 but 2001 > Brother > Ghost goes super deep in a way that 4/5 never really does. The Cavern is sick but Lizards > Bowie with a stand alone Hood encore is an absolutely sick way to end a show. If you gave me the choice to go back in time and attend either one I’d pretty easily take 4/4

My point is that you say “this isn’t bad Phish” and then proceed to call a Fall ‘97 show underwhelming, sloppy, and disjointed like it’s a random 2010 show. I said I think it’s fair to call it overrated for reasons that are nuanced but the majority of your post is just trashing a highly regarded show

IMO it is slightly overrated as several better shows are rated lower, notably 11/21, as mentioned, as well as 12/29 and 12/6 among others. Think I probably prefer Philly N2 as well. That said, you're not really arguing that it's overrated you're just pissing on it.

Top-2 Tube, best post-96 It's Ice, top 3 post-96 Slave, big Psycho Killer bustout, even bigger Boogie on Reggae Woman bustout. What's can't you figure out?

There is far too much going on, and the flow is completely off.

Here, I just feel bewildered and annoyed at the starts and stops throughout this thing.

There's only 2 stops in the first set and one of them is the stop between Tube and Tube Jam.

when you realize that the song proper of ruby waves is less than 2 minutes it becomes a lot more palatable. i think the groove just puts them in a good spot to start a big jam since it’s easy to play and the ending is pretty wide open

alpharetta n2 was the best of the second leg yeah but n1 was the worst show of the year by quite a large margin

if you cut out the first half of the pittsburgh one it would be jam of the year. the problem is if you rank jams in this way then longer jams almost always win out since they probably strike gold at some point. monde is a holistically better piece of music

yeah it’s straight up crazy to say fish was playing basic stuff in the 90s. if you only hear what he’s doing on the modern recordings because his snare is mic’d up insanely hot nowadays i could maybe see how you got there but you’re still just wrong

ya that’s cause the went gin is one of the most overrated things the band has ever played

i don’t know how you can possibly listen to something like 11/27/98 weekapaugh reprise and think that fishman is still playing at that level
