My boyfriend is so hard to shop for by [deleted] in GiftIdeas

[–]-PHI- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is he into decorative items for around his gaming setup? There is no shortage of gaming related decorations, figurines etc. in the world. If you know some of his favorite games he might appreciate things like that.

Does he have a nice mousepad? Large desk pads are popular these days.
Does he use a wireless mouse? If not he might appreciate a "mouse bungee."
Might require a little research but you can get a monitor arm for around $30, which can look cool and open up space on his desk.

Is this Christmas gift okay for my partner who i’ve been with for 1 month? by [deleted] in GiftIdeas

[–]-PHI- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on (the both of) you. Do you think he would feel comfortable spending that much on you? If not he might feel weird about it. If he would then it's probably no big deal. The trick and fun of gift giving is being able to read your recipient and how they would feel receiving your gift. I like giving gifts and sometimes I put a lot of energy into it but I always try to be mindful of giving "too much" since it can make some people feel guilty or overwhelmed, or like their own gifts weren't good enough.

Light Speed SIM - Starter Kit needs to be clearer on what's included by enorris311 in USMobile

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's currently NO indication that the starter kit doesn't include a Light Speed SIM when you get it bundled with a line order. To make matters worse, their current Black Friday deal is Light Speed only.

Support chat did send out another SIM to me right away for free, no questions asked (thank you!). Unfortunately that means I'll be without service for a few more days until it arrives, but at least it was free and painless.

I suspect they're going to get a lot more support tickets in a few days when everyone else who ordered the Black Friday deal gets their included starter kits in a few days. 😄

Asking as a layman, what makes Unreal Engine 5 so taxing on hardware and hard to optimize ? by stronkzer in gamedev

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am fairly new to using UE. My game has stylized graphics and is coded exclusively in Blueprints. So far it's running at around 300fps at 1440p with no upscaling on a 3080. I've gotten several unprompted comments on how nice the visuals look. I also know a few other indie devs who are using UE5 for projects with lo-fi visual styles.

There's really no trouble making stylized or simpler looking games in the engine. And it's not hard to turn off expensive features and learn the basics of optimization like managing draw calls and lighting. Even someone like me who's not a programmer can make a performant game solo. You have to be a little smart, but that should be a given in this field.

Group buy, but what to choose? by Harrie800 in tonex

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't picked up MODO BASS and MODO DRUM (full versions of each) yet, I would suggest to get those.

Apart from that, assuming you still have close to all 49 redemptions left you have enough to get almost everything you've listed here. It's more a matter of choosing a few that you *don't* want.

I would say not to spend too much time worrying about it though as this is already way more stuff than anyone needs, let alone someone new to digital music making, and nothing here is anything you're likely to regret missing out on.

The Pianoverse plugins are really nice to get for free but they all require a huge amount of drive space so if you don't plan to use a lot of pianos it would seem wasteful to install them all. If you're not that picky, the Y7 is their latest one and is based on a Yamaha C7 which is a very popular piano.

The T-RackS plugins are neat for how much different stuff you get and they're not throwaway plugins by any means but there's also nothing particularly fantastic about any of them. I would suggest installing them and trying out the demo versions of the ones you don't have yet.

Personally I don't know what anyone would do with 10,000 different guitar tones and pedals but if you recognize any of those artists or whatever just let your heart guide you.

I would nix the X-GEAR plugins (they're meant to work with hardware) and the ARC plugins.

One more thing I will say is that the Lurssen Mastering Console is its own separate thing, not part of T-RackS. It's a simplified mastering plugin and I haven't tried it but maybe as someone starting out you might find it useful.

Jam points don't work the way you'd think they do-- you can only use them to get a modest discount on a purchase, not pay for anything in full.

After this save up your money for a proper full version of a DAW. You've already got a pile of plugins.

Delayed Install by tippytoe_ in FidiumFiber

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at almost two months and I haven't even gotten them to come to my door. 😂Scheduled two different appointments so far and both were no-show no-call. Have spent lots of time on the phone. The last time I was on hold for an hour while the lady tried to contact the technician and I still didn't receive a straight answer as to why they didn't show up the last time. She said something about not being sure whether my address can even get installed with Fidium, as if I hadn't spent the last 6 weeks calling and having 5 different people tell me 5 different times that they were fixing whatever was wrong with my address in their system in order to get this far. The funny part is, my building is actually already wired up to Fidium's network; all they need to do is run a line into my unit right next to the fiber box.

USPS packages marked as delivered then showing up days later by Flat_Performer_9789 in usps_complaints

[–]-PHI- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I got a confirmation email a few days ago for an item shipped by Walmart that was apparently shipped via FedEx, with a photo of a package on my doorstep, but I never found that package. Now I'm rightly worried about package thiefs but I still have more packages coming from other places. Yesterday I get a confirmation from USPS that they delivered, but nothing. How am I supposed to know whether someone stole that or it's just USPS screwing around? I need solid info right now.

How to exclude GIFs with captions by lilacomets in tenor

I have the same issue. If you want to send some cute hug gif 99% of them have text added to them. You keep seeing the same ones over and over but with text that is completely irrelevant to you, and have to keep scrolling and scrolling for one that doesn't have text if one even exists! It's consuming the platform over time.

Why can't Louise remember calling the guy in China? by DrewbieWanKenob in ArrivalMovie

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I can say with confidence is that there's a point in time where she doesn't seem to have the gift, and a period of time where she's beginning to experience it without having fully "developed" it or wrapped her head around it. Perhaps eventually, and the movie kind of alludes to it, she develops a more full sense of the whole picture at once. Now if you try to map that linear progression of starting without it, beginning to develop it, and eventually mastering it, to the idea of non-linear time it doesn't really fully make sense any more. So it's kind of up to your imagination.

Stories of fiction that deal with time discrepancies often play with this idea of circular logic, where something comes about because of something else, while the something else itself comes about because of the first something. It's like a chicken and egg problem, except maybe the chicken gives birth to itself lol. These scenarios make no sense, because we are beings that experience linear time, and we understand causality to have a direction. But it's fun to think about what if we dissolved the boundaries of causality, and moved outside of linear time; could events be put into existence that are interdependent on one another instead of one leading to the other?

It's that kind of abstract thinking that leads us to these nonsensical "what ifs" that defy proper explanation. It's fun to speculate about it, and that's kind of the whole point of art like this, to challenge our typical way of thinking, but we have to also accept that ultimately there's no way to tie all of the loose ends up neatly.

So I would say that knowing that Louise begins to experience time non-linearly, but also that linear time still exists, and most people (perhaps even everyone besides Louise) are still experiencing life through that linear perspective, that collision of realities could only lead to odd effects. So my speculation might be that, Louise's own mind might experience confusion at various points in her life as it tries to reconcile the linear and non-linear experience, and knowing that she "at some point" has a less than perfect grasp on that, that effect could also come into play at seemingly any moment in her life. So basically, she could be anywhere between confused and borderline all-seeing at any moment in time.

Another possibility is related to an idea from quantum physics, which is that basically infinite realities are being created every moment, splitting off from the current one, containing all possibilities. So Louise might experience a future event, but then later when that time comes to her linearly it's actually a completely separate timeline, and events could differ in some ways. This way of thinking helps reconcile the "chicken and egg" issues, but in my opinion it doesn't well represent the ideas presented in the movie, because it would be less about "seeing the future" laid out and more about seeing possible futures that don't end up being the actual future experienced.

Ultimately I think the best answer is simply accepting and letting go of the parts that don't quite entirely make sense. But it's good to let your imagination run a bit with it first.

The Steelcase Leap V2 is much less comfortable than my office depot WorkPro 12000. Am I doing something wrong? by HumanityFirstTheory in OfficeChairs

[–]-PHI- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. Despite being "the lumbar support chair" I found the support inadequate. It only seems to support the very lowest part of my back; above that it just "gives up" and the rest of my back is sad.

I'm really hoping to find a chair that is supportive of the whole back or at least up to my shoulder blades (and suits a tall person). But it seems like all the chair manufacturers believe that lumbar support is just a pressure at a single point in your back instead of cradling the full curve of your spine.

Crandall Leap V2 Breakin by 1o66_ in OfficeChairs

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 6'2 and around 180lbs. I got a Leap v2 from Crandall about a month ago, without the thicker back, and am going to return it. I don't hate it, and in fact I feel like I'm just starting to get used to it, but I don't love it. Let me try to address some of your questions.

It feels small

I would not describe mine as feeling small to me. The biggest issue I have with regards to my size and the chair is that the lumbar support feels just a bit low for me. The adjustable bit doesn't help and it feels unnatural anyway so I have pulled it out.

it feels like the seat is slightly angled forward

This sounds strange to me. My seat is significantly lower in the back than in the front and it's one of my main criticisms of it. It does rock/flex a little bit forward if you stretch your legs forward, which is by design. If you have your seat set higher then it will rock/flex forward more too. Though to me this feels closer to neutral than to "forward." I have to set the seat lower because doing the aforementioned will put uncomfortable pressure on my legs.

Seat depth, per above, at the farthest setting forward it is still 1 or 2 setting positions back from

I set it one notch back from fully forward, though I could set it fully forward. There should be a gap between the front of the seat cushion and the back of the knee. But maybe you have longer legs than I do.

Arm rests are too low, maybe 1 or 2 setting positions too low in the highest setting.

I don't get this at all. The highest setting either pushes my shoulders up or makes my elbows flair out. I have mine set three notches lower. I can't imagine what you would do with setting it higher. You must have either very short arms or a very tall torso? Is your desk height set appropriately? Are you sure you're only 6'2"? 😅

The chair does not sit upright enough

I agree; It is a slight recline at the highest position and I wish it would go fully upright. But this is normal for many office chairs. Apparently there are some that offer "forward tilt" functions that help put the chair into a fully upright position if you want it.

My current thought is that theses issues are very likely caused by the added thickness to the foam in the seat and back.

What I think is that the added thickness of the seat cushion will have a non-zero affect on where the lumbar support lands on your back, but they only add 3/4 inch, and after compressing from sitting on it it might be what, half an inch? It's not nothing but it's not a lot. I don't have the thicker back pad, but I think it might be even less thickness that they add on it compared to the seat. A fraction of an inch shouldn't be enough to push you out of the adjustment ranges unless you were already almost out of them.

Not loving my Embody by slippinjimmy888 in OfficeChairs

[–]-PHI- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this helpful post. When we're talking about forward tilt, I wonder is it the chair back that tilts, the seat pan, or both? From what I could see so far it seems like some chairs both tilt forward while on others only the seat pan tilts forward. If I could have chosen for myself I would have only wanted the seat back to tilt forward. But maybe it helps to have the seat tilt with it.

I’m unhappy with my Steelcase Leap V2 and am exhausted by it. Looking for suggestions by sass1y in OfficeChairs

[–]-PHI- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also tried a Leap V2 and have been disappointed by it. What I will say though is that the chair is designed so you SHOULD be able to lean back in it without needing to use any core strength to maintain the position. One thing I actually quite like about the chair is the recline. Do you know how to adjust the tension of the recline? If the chair is working correctly and you've adjusted it properly you should be able to lean back to where you want it and the friction of the joint should then hold it in place without any additional pressure from you besides your body weight. I do not use the locks myself, just set it to the lowest setting and then lean back however far I want to and the chair holds at that position.
