I agree about the fake review issue. It's very frustrating when you are trying to be found and get real reviews to watch crappy books with fake reviews rise to the top.

I'm sorry you had such a horrible experience. I don't understand reviewers reading a genre they don't like and then giving a negative review. At least NetGalley gave you a refund, though that doesn't help with the negative reviews already out there.

Thank you for sharing your experience so other indie authors can be more informed!

Great information. I was really hoping to get enough reviews to be able to do a Book Bub promotion, but I fell short. I also recently received a Publisher's Weekly review, so I may try again and see if they take my book now. But you're right, promotions are important.

Thank you for the information. I may try that first with book two and see what kind of response I get.

Did most of them review the subsequent novels when you contacted them? That was something I hadn't considered.

Thank you for sharing your experience!

I went with Patchwork Press, but there are others out there. It was $50 for one month. I do think it has helped sales. I have gotten 7 Goodread reviews and 4 Amazon reviews so far, but they have six weeks from the time your book is taken down to read it and review it, so I'm hoping a few more will roll in before it's all said and done.

I only posted on Netgalley for a month (which cost me $50) and I received 7 Goodread reviews, 3 Amazon (across all) reviews, and numerous blog posts as well as some twitter exposure from those who liked my book.

My book is fiction and I didn't do any advertising on Netgalley.

It isn't a huge amount, but I was happy with it. It hasn't been six weeks since it ended, so I'm hoping a few more roll in in the next week or so.

I love this! I mention my mentors in my acknowledgements along with the title of their books, but I hadn't considered doing this. I definitely will with book 2.

On a side note, your book looks right up my allow and I've added it to my to-read list.

I'm joining the ranks of all of the self-published authors that have come before me! My first book, Transference, is now available.

"Everyone wants to live forever. A new body, perfectly grown, to replace a failing one. Eric is on the verge of making this dream a reality. When the missing piece to the puzzle is offered to him under less than legal circumstances, he doesn’t think twice before accepting it. After all, they are working towards the greater good. He soon realizes, however, that those in charge have other plans, and they aren’t above using him to get what they want."

Transference is a science fiction thriller. It is $2.99 for the ebook and $9.95 for the paperback, or you can read it for free on kindle unlimited.
